Excerpt: The Moon’s farside is not permanently dark, but it remains largely hidden from Earth because of tidal locking. Here is what makes this cratered, scientifically valuable hemisphere different—and why spacecraft are essential to exploring it.

## The Lunar Farside: A Hemisphere Earth Rarely Sees

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day entry for October 10, 2026 is titled **“Lunar Farside.”** The available source summary identifies the subject but does not include the full image caption, image credit, observing location, or technical details of the photograph or mosaic.

That limitation matters. Without the complete APOD explanation, it would not be responsible to identify particular craters, spacecraft instruments, or lunar features supposedly shown in the image. What is clear, however, is that the lunar farside is one of the Moon’s most distinctive and scientifically important regions.

The farside is the hemisphere that generally faces away from Earth. It is often called the Moon’s “dark side,” but that familiar phrase is misleading. The farside receives sunlight just as the Earth-facing side does. It has day and night, sunrise and sunset, and long stretches of lunar daylight. What it lacks is a direct view of Earth.

## Why We Always See Nearly the Same Side of the Moon

The Moon is **tidally locked** to Earth. It rotates once on its axis in about the same time it takes to orbit Earth: roughly 27.3 days. Because those periods match, the same broad lunar hemisphere remains pointed toward our planet.

Tidal locking developed over immense spans of time as gravitational forces between Earth and the Moon altered the Moon’s rotation. Early in its history, the Moon likely spun faster. Earth’s gravity raised tidal bulges in the lunar body, and the resulting gravitational interactions gradually slowed its spin until it reached the stable state seen today.

This does not mean that exactly 50 percent of the Moon is permanently invisible from Earth. Small apparent shifts in the Moon’s orientation, known as **libration**, allow observers on Earth to glimpse around the edges over time. Altogether, astronomers can observe about 59 percent of the lunar surface from Earth-based viewpoints.

The remaining area requires spacecraft observations.

## The Farside Is Not the “Dark Side”

The term “dark side of the Moon” has persisted in popular culture, but it confuses visibility with illumination.

Like Earth, the Moon rotates relative to the Sun. A location on the farside experiences approximately two weeks of daylight followed by approximately two weeks of darkness. During the lunar day, sunlight can be intense because the Moon has no substantial atmosphere to scatter light or moderate surface conditions. During the long lunar night, temperatures can fall dramatically.

The most accurate terms are therefore **near side** and **farside**. The near side faces Earth on average; the farside faces away from it.

This distinction became especially meaningful during the Space Age. Until 1959, no human being had seen the farside directly. That changed when the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 transmitted the first rough images of the hidden hemisphere. Later orbiters, including NASA missions and international lunar spacecraft, produced vastly more detailed maps.

## A More Cratered and Mountainous Landscape

At first glance, the Moon’s near side and farside may appear similar: both are ancient, impact-scarred worlds with craters, basins, ridges, and highlands. Yet their large-scale appearance differs substantially.

The near side contains many of the Moon’s familiar dark plains, called **maria**. These broad, basalt-rich regions formed when ancient volcanic lava flooded enormous impact basins. From Earth, the maria create patterns that have inspired generations of observers to see a “man in the Moon” or other imagined shapes.

The farside has far fewer extensive maria. Instead, much of it is dominated by brighter, heavily cratered highland terrain. Its crust is generally thicker than the crust beneath much of the near side, a difference that may have limited the ability of magma to reach the surface after major impacts.

Scientists continue to investigate why the two hemispheres evolved so differently. Possible explanations involve the Moon’s early thermal history, the distribution of radioactive heat-producing elements, the formation of the lunar crust, and the effects of early impacts. The contrast is a reminder that even a relatively small rocky world can preserve a complex geological history.

## The South Pole–Aitken Basin and Other Major Features

The lunar farside includes one of the Solar System’s most remarkable impact structures: the **South Pole–Aitken basin**. This immense basin stretches across a large portion of the Moon’s southern farside and is among the largest and oldest recognized impact basins in the Solar System.

Its scale makes it a high-priority target for lunar science. An impact powerful enough to create such a feature may have excavated material from deep within the Moon, potentially giving researchers access to clues about the lunar interior. Samples from the region could improve models of how the Moon differentiated into crust, mantle, and core early in its history.

The farside also contains innumerable smaller craters, some of which have changed little for billions of years. Because the Moon lacks weather, liquid water, and a thick atmosphere, impacts remain recorded on its surface for extraordinary periods. Those scars form a valuable archive of the impact environment in the inner Solar System.

## Why Exploring the Farside Is Technically Difficult

A crewed or robotic mission on the farside cannot communicate directly with Earth while it is on the surface. The bulk of the Moon blocks radio signals. For that reason, farside landers typically need a relay satellite positioned so that it can see both Earth and the landing site.

China’s Chang’e 4 mission demonstrated this approach in 2019 when it made the first soft landing on the lunar farside. Communications were routed through the Queqiao relay satellite. The mission showed that farside operations are possible, while also underlining the additional infrastructure needed for them.

This communication challenge will be relevant to future lunar science missions as agencies and commercial partners pursue more ambitious exploration. The farside offers compelling terrain, but it is not as operationally simple as a location with a direct line of sight to Earth.

## A Quiet Place for Radio Astronomy

The farside has another major scientific advantage: it is shielded from much of the radio interference produced by human technology on Earth.

Our planet emits a constant stream of radio signals from broadcasting, radar, communications systems, and electronic devices. Earth’s ionosphere also limits certain low-frequency radio observations from the ground. On the lunar farside, the body of the Moon can block much of this interference.

That makes the region an intriguing possible location for low-frequency radio astronomy. Scientists are interested in observing radio signals from the early universe, including periods before the first stars fully illuminated the cosmos. These observations are challenging and remain an area of research and technology development, but the farside may eventually provide one of the quietest radio environments accessible near Earth.

Any future observatory would need to balance scientific opportunity with practical constraints, including power, extreme temperature cycles, dust, communications relays, and careful protection of radio-quiet conditions.

## The Significance of a Farside View

Images of the lunar farside are more than unusual portraits of a hidden landscape. They show a world shaped by the same broad processes that affected the visible Moon, but with a very different geological expression.

The farside helps scientists test ideas about lunar formation and evolution. It preserves ancient impact history. It contains major basins that may expose deep material. And it could become an important site for astronomical observations that are difficult or impossible from Earth.

NASA’s APOD feature offers a useful prompt to look beyond the Moon’s familiar face. The hemisphere turned away from Earth is not mysterious because it is unlit. It is compelling because its history, terrain, and scientific potential can only be understood through continued exploration.
