Excerpt: NASA’s Office of the General Counsel supports missions ranging from lunar exploration to research partnerships and procurement. Here is what NASA’s job opportunities page says, what remains unclear, and how prospective applicants can find verified federal openings.

## NASA Office of the General Counsel Highlights Legal Career Paths

NASA is best known for spacecraft, science missions, astronauts, and the engineering required to explore beyond Earth. But every one of those activities also involves legal work. Contracts must be negotiated, intellectual property must be managed, partnerships must comply with federal law, and agency decisions must meet requirements involving ethics, environmental review, employment, data, international cooperation, and public accountability.

NASA’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the agency organization responsible for much of that legal guidance.

A NASA webpage titled “Job Opportunities: NASA Office of the General Counsel” directs readers to the federal government’s USAJobs portal for current NASA vacancies. The page also references a vacancy announcement for a Chief Counsel at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

However, the source item provides limited detail beyond those links. It does not specify whether the Chief Counsel announcement remains open, its application deadline, salary range, hiring authority, or qualification requirements. Anyone considering an application should therefore treat USAJobs and the official vacancy announcement as the definitive sources for current status.

## What NASA’s Office of the General Counsel Does

The Office of the General Counsel provides legal advice to NASA leadership, mission directorates, field centers, and other agency organizations. Its work helps NASA carry out its responsibilities under U.S. law while advancing scientific research, aeronautics, human spaceflight, technology development, and commercial partnerships.

NASA’s legal needs are broad because the agency’s work is broad. Attorneys and legal professionals may be involved in areas such as:

– Federal procurement and government contracts
– Space Act Agreements and other partnership arrangements
– Employment and labor law
– Ethics and conflicts of interest
– Intellectual property, patents, and licensing
– Environmental law and regulatory compliance
– Freedom of Information Act requests and records management
– International agreements and export controls
– Litigation, claims, and administrative law
– Privacy, cybersecurity, and technology-related legal questions

This work is often closely connected to technical and scientific programs. For example, a research partnership with a university, a launch-services contract, or an agreement involving a commercial spacecraft company can require legal review before the project moves ahead.

## Why Legal Roles Matter to NASA Missions

Legal teams may not design rockets or operate telescopes, but their advice can be essential to the agency’s ability to pursue those goals responsibly.

NASA works with a large network of federal agencies, international partners, universities, contractors, nonprofit organizations, and commercial firms. These relationships require clear rules about responsibilities, funding, safety, intellectual property, data sharing, liability, and compliance with U.S. law.

The growing role of commercial space companies has made these issues especially visible. NASA now relies on a mix of traditional federal contracting and partnership mechanisms to support activities including cargo missions, crew transportation, lunar lander development, Earth-observation programs, and technology demonstrations.

Legal oversight helps distinguish between different types of agreements and ensures that NASA uses the appropriate authority for each arrangement. That can affect everything from how funds are spent to who owns inventions produced during a collaboration.

The same is true for international exploration. NASA’s Artemis program involves cooperation with multiple nations and space agencies. Legal frameworks help define how participating organizations coordinate activities, exchange information, and align with shared principles for peaceful space exploration.

## The Chief Counsel Reference at NASA Glenn

The NASA OGC jobs page specifically points to a vacancy announcement for Chief Counsel at NASA Glenn Research Center.

Glenn is one of NASA’s major field centers. Located in Ohio, it has longstanding expertise in aeronautics, propulsion, power systems, communications technology, materials, and other research areas. Its work supports both aviation and space-related programs.

A Chief Counsel at a NASA field center would generally be expected to lead or coordinate legal services for that center, advise senior management, and work with the broader Office of the General Counsel on agency-wide matters. Depending on the role’s official description, the position could involve oversight of contract issues, research partnerships, personnel matters, ethics, environmental compliance, intellectual-property questions, and other center operations.

The source page does not provide enough information to determine the exact scope of this particular announcement. It also does not establish whether the position is currently accepting applications.

The page’s listed publication date is October 13, 2026. That date should not be taken, by itself, as confirmation of an active vacancy, particularly because web pages may be updated, republished, or retain older links. Applicants should always check the opening and closing dates shown on USAJobs.

## How to Find Verified NASA Legal Vacancies

NASA directs job seekers to USAJobs, the official employment site for much of the U.S. federal government. This is the most reliable place to verify whether an opening is active.

Applicants interested in legal work should search for terms such as “NASA,” “Office of General Counsel,” “Attorney-Adviser,” “General Attorney,” “Chief Counsel,” or the name of a specific NASA center. Searches can also be filtered by location, job series, pay grade, telework eligibility, appointment type, and application status.

Federal job postings can differ significantly from private-sector listings. A USAJobs announcement usually identifies:

– The hiring organization and duty location
– Opening and closing dates
– Salary range and pay system
– Eligibility requirements
– Required qualifications and specialized experience
– Education or bar-admission requirements where applicable
– Required documents
– Assessment or application steps
– Instructions for current federal employees, veterans, and other eligible groups

For attorney positions, applicants may need active membership in the bar of a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. The exact requirement depends on the individual announcement.

Applicants should read every section of an official posting. Federal hiring processes can require detailed resumes, transcripts, proof of bar membership, veteran-preference documentation, or other materials that may not be standard in private-sector applications.

## A Career Path Beyond Engineering and Science

NASA employment is often associated with engineers, scientists, technicians, and mission specialists. Those roles remain central to the agency, but NASA also depends on professionals in law, acquisition, communications, finance, human resources, cybersecurity, information technology, and administration.

Legal careers at NASA can appeal to professionals who want public-service work connected to advanced research and exploration. The role is not simply about space law in the narrow sense. It can involve the practical legal structure that allows a federal research organization to buy services, collaborate with partners, protect public resources, and operate transparently.

That range is part of the significance of the OGC jobs page. It serves as a reminder that major scientific institutions require expertise across many disciplines. NASA’s missions may begin with ambitious technical questions, but carrying them out also requires capable governance and legal support.

## What Is Known and What Is Not

The available source clearly indicates that NASA’s Office of the General Counsel maintains a page for job opportunities and directs readers to USAJobs for current NASA openings. It also references a Chief Counsel vacancy announcement associated with NASA Glenn Research Center.

What is not clear from the source summary is whether that Chief Counsel role is active, when applications close, what grade or salary applies, or which qualifications are required. The summary also contains unrelated text about preparations for moonwalk simulations, which does not appear to describe the OGC jobs page and should not be interpreted as part of the legal hiring announcement.

For prospective applicants, the practical next step is straightforward: use the NASA OGC page as a starting point, then consult USAJobs for the current official listing and application instructions.
