Excerpt: November 2026 offers several reasons to look up: slow-moving Taurid meteors, the faster Leonid shower, Mars near Jupiter, a notably close full Moon, and a remarkable distance milestone for Voyager 1.

## November 2026 Brings Meteors, Planets and a Lunar Showcase

NASA’s skywatching outlook for November 2026 points to a packed month for casual observers and longtime astronomy enthusiasts alike. The highlights include two annual meteor showers, a visually appealing meeting of Mars and Jupiter, a bright “supermoon,” and an extraordinary spacecraft milestone for Voyager 1.

None of these events requires a telescope. In fact, the meteor showers and the Moon are best appreciated with the unaided eye. Binoculars can enhance views of Mars and Jupiter, while a small telescope may reveal Jupiter’s major moons and, under favorable conditions, some surface detail on Mars.

As always, local weather, light pollution, the Moon’s phase, and an observer’s latitude will determine exactly what is visible. NASA’s monthly guide provides the broad observing themes, but skywatchers should also use a local astronomy app or observatory forecast for precise rise and set times.

## Taurid Meteors: Fewer Streaks, but Sometimes Brilliant Fireballs

November begins with the Taurid meteor shower season, which includes two overlapping streams known as the Southern Taurids and Northern Taurids. The shower is associated with debris from Comet Encke and related objects that travel through the inner solar system.

The Taurids are not usually the year’s most active shower. Their hourly rates are typically modest compared with major displays such as the Perseids or Geminids. Their reputation comes instead from the possibility of unusually bright meteors, often called fireballs.

A Taurid meteor can appear slow and long-lasting compared with the rapid flashes produced by some other showers. That makes the shower a rewarding target even on a night with only a handful of visible meteors.

For the best chance of seeing them, find a dark location with an open view of the sky. Allow at least 20 to 30 minutes for your eyes to adapt to darkness, avoid looking at phone screens, and bring warm clothing. No special equipment is needed. Reclining chairs or blankets are more useful than telescopes because meteors may appear anywhere overhead.

The Taurids do not have a single sharp peak in the way some meteor showers do. Instead, activity can be spread across several nights in early to mid-November. This means observers have multiple chances to catch a bright meteor if clouds interfere on one evening.

## The Leonids Return in Mid-November

The Leonid meteor shower is another annual November event. Its meteors are fragments left behind by Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. The shower’s radiant — the point from which its streaks appear to originate — lies in the constellation Leo, giving the Leonids their name.

Leonids are generally faster than Taurids. Their speed can make them look like quick, sharp streaks across the sky. The shower is usually most favorable after midnight and before dawn, when an observer’s side of Earth is moving more directly into the stream of comet debris.

The Leonids have a celebrated history. At intervals connected to Comet Tempel-Tuttle’s orbit, the shower has produced meteor storms with spectacularly high rates. The famous 1833 Leonid storm, for example, became an important event in the early scientific study of meteor showers.

However, a meteor storm should never be assumed in an ordinary year. November 2026 is best viewed as an opportunity to see a dependable annual shower rather than a guaranteed extraordinary outburst. Actual rates depend on the density and location of dust trails Earth encounters, as well as viewing conditions from the ground.

Moonlight can also reduce the number of faint meteors visible. Even so, brighter Leonids can still be seen from a reasonably dark site.

## Mars and Jupiter Make a Notable Pairing

One of November’s easiest planetary sights will be the apparent close approach of Mars and Jupiter. The planets will look near one another from Earth’s viewpoint, creating a conspicuous pairing in the sky.

The two worlds are not actually close in space. A conjunction or close pairing is a line-of-sight effect caused by the planets’ changing positions as they orbit the Sun. Mars is a rocky world that orbits closer to the Sun than Jupiter, while Jupiter is the solar system’s largest planet and circles much farther out.

Their different colors can make the scene especially attractive. Mars often appears orange or reddish because of iron-rich minerals in its soil. Jupiter is brighter and generally looks cream-white to the naked eye.

Binoculars may help distinguish the planets from nearby stars, though they will likely be obvious without optical aid. A telescope can reveal Jupiter as a disk and may show its four largest moons — Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto — as tiny points nearby. Those moons, first observed by Galileo in 1610, change position from night to night as they orbit Jupiter.

Mars will appear much smaller through a telescope than Jupiter does, and seeing detail on its surface depends heavily on its distance from Earth and atmospheric steadiness. Still, the visual contrast between the bright giant planet and the red planet is worth a look.

## November’s Supermoon: A Full Moon Near Perigee

NASA also flags November’s full Moon as a supermoon. This informal term is commonly used when a full Moon occurs near perigee, the point in its elliptical orbit where it is closest to Earth.

The Moon’s distance varies because its orbit is not a perfect circle. A full Moon near perigee can appear somewhat larger and brighter than a full Moon near apogee, its most distant point from Earth.

The effect is real, but it is often overstated in photographs and online comparisons. To most observers, the size difference is subtle when viewing a single Moon without a reference point. The Moon can look especially large when it is near the horizon, but that familiar “giant Moon” impression is largely a perceptual effect known as the Moon illusion, not a sudden dramatic change in physical size.

A supermoon is still a fine reason to observe the lunar surface. Binoculars reveal the dark volcanic plains called maria, while even a modest telescope can show craters, mountain ranges, and bright ray systems. The most striking lunar detail is often seen near the terminator, the line dividing lunar day and night, where low-angle sunlight casts long shadows.

The tradeoff is that a bright Moon can wash out faint stars and reduce meteor visibility. Skywatchers hoping to photograph or count meteors should prioritize darker nights around the relevant shower peaks.

## Voyager 1 Reaches a One-Light-Day Distance Milestone

November 2026 also marks a milestone that cannot be seen in the night sky but speaks to the scale of the solar system. NASA notes that Voyager 1 reaches a distance at which radio signals traveling at the speed of light take roughly one day to travel one way between Earth and the spacecraft.

Voyager 1 launched in 1977 and made historic flybys of Jupiter and Saturn before continuing into interstellar space. It is the most distant human-made object from Earth.

A “light-day” is a unit of distance: how far light travels in 24 hours. Light moves at about 299,792 kilometers per second, or roughly 186,282 miles per second. Over one day, it travels about 25.9 billion kilometers, equivalent to approximately 16.1 billion miles.

The milestone is a useful reminder that space communication is never instantaneous. By the time a command sent from Earth reaches Voyager 1, about a day has passed. A response or
