# Hubble Investigates a Case of Missing Oxygen in Dwarf Galaxies

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has examined 37 nearby dwarf galaxies and found that a large share of the oxygen astronomers expected to detect appears to be missing.

The result, described by NASA as a “case of missing oxygen,” adds an important clue to a long-running question in galaxy evolution: what happens to the heavy elements made by stars after they are released into space?

Dwarf galaxies are small compared with galaxies such as the Milky Way, but they are scientifically valuable. Their relatively shallow gravitational pull makes them especially sensitive to stellar feedback—the combined effect of radiation, stellar winds, and supernova explosions. That makes them useful natural laboratories for studying how galaxies retain, lose, and recycle gas.

The new Hubble work does not mean oxygen has vanished from the universe. Instead, it suggests that oxygen produced in these galaxies may be located in forms or places that are difficult to measure directly with existing observations.

## Why Oxygen Matters to Astronomers

Oxygen is one of the most abundant heavy elements in the cosmos. In astronomy, elements heavier than helium are often called “metals,” regardless of whether they are metals in the everyday chemical sense.

The early universe contained mostly hydrogen and helium, with only trace amounts of lithium. Heavier elements—including carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, and iron—were created later inside stars and during stellar explosions.

Massive stars make large amounts of oxygen through nuclear fusion. When those stars end their lives as supernovae, they disperse oxygen-rich material into the gas between stars. Over time, that enriched gas can become part of new stars, planets, and potentially planetary atmospheres.

Because of this cycle, oxygen is a useful record of a galaxy’s history. Its abundance can reveal how much star formation has occurred, how efficiently a galaxy has held onto material, and how strongly stellar explosions have reshaped its environment.

## What Hubble Observed

According to NASA’s summary, Hubble studied 37 nearby dwarf galaxies and found that much of the oxygen expected in those systems was not detected.

The source material does not provide all of the survey’s detailed measurements, modeling assumptions, or individual galaxy results. What is clear is that researchers compared the oxygen observed in these dwarf galaxies with the amount expected from their star-formation histories and chemical evolution.

That comparison revealed a shortfall.

Such findings are often described as a “missing metals” problem. Astronomers can estimate how many heavy elements should have been produced by past generations of stars. But measuring every possible location and state of those elements is difficult. Some oxygen may be in cool gas, some in warm ionized gas, some in extremely hot gas, and some potentially beyond the visible boundaries of the galaxy.

Hubble’s observations help constrain the amount of oxygen found in the galaxies’ observable regions. The next challenge is determining where the rest may be.

## Where Could the Oxygen Be?

Several scientifically plausible explanations could account for oxygen that is not readily observed within a dwarf galaxy.

### Galactic Winds May Carry It Away

Dwarf galaxies have less mass than large spiral galaxies, so their gravity is weaker. Powerful supernova explosions can heat surrounding gas and drive it outward in large-scale flows known as galactic winds.

If oxygen-rich gas escapes a dwarf galaxy, it may enter the circumgalactic medium—the diffuse gas surrounding a galaxy—or travel farther into intergalactic space. In that case, the oxygen is not destroyed; it has simply been relocated.

This process matters because the gas outside galaxies is not empty. It is part of a much larger ecosystem through which material can move, cool, mix, and sometimes fall back into galaxies.

### Oxygen May Be in a Hard-to-Detect Gas Phase

Oxygen can exist in gas at many temperatures and ionization states. Different telescopes and instruments are sensitive to different wavelengths of light, which means they detect different physical conditions.

Cooler gas may be observed at optical or radio wavelengths, while hotter and more highly ionized gas can require ultraviolet or X-ray observations. If a significant fraction of oxygen sits in a temperature range that is difficult to observe, it could be undercounted.

This is one reason multiwavelength astronomy is essential. A galaxy viewed only in visible light provides an incomplete picture of its gas and chemical composition.

### Some Material Could Be Stored Beyond the Measured Region

Galaxies do not have sharp edges. Their stars may occupy a relatively compact area, but gas can extend much farther out. Oxygen expelled by stars may remain gravitationally associated with a galaxy while residing far beyond the regions typically measured in detail.

Future observations of the extended gas around dwarf galaxies could help determine whether the missing oxygen is still nearby or has escaped into intergalactic space.

## Why Dwarf Galaxies Are Important

It might be tempting to see dwarf galaxies as minor players because of their size. In reality, they are central to understanding cosmic history.

Small galaxies were likely much more common in the early universe, and their star formation helped transform the chemical makeup of the cosmos. They also provide a simpler setting for testing theories of feedback and gas loss than larger galaxies, where many processes overlap.

In a massive galaxy such as the Milky Way, gravity makes it harder for supernova-driven gas to escape completely. In dwarf galaxies, a burst of star formation can have a much more dramatic effect. A relatively small number of massive stars may heat, disrupt, or expel a substantial fraction of the galaxy’s gas.

That sensitivity makes dwarf galaxies important test cases for computer simulations of galaxy formation. Models need to explain not only how stars form, but also how galaxies regulate that process by losing gas, gaining gas, and redistributing heavy elements.

## The Broader Chemical-Evolution Puzzle

The Hubble result speaks to a larger question: how did the universe become chemically enriched over time?

Every generation of stars changes its surroundings. Stars convert light elements into heavier ones, and stellar winds and supernovae send those products outward. Galaxies then inherit material processed by previous stars.

But this recycling is not perfectly contained. Gas can be blown out, stripped away through interactions, or accreted from the surrounding environment. The balance between these processes influences whether a galaxy continues forming stars or gradually runs out of usable gas.

If dwarf galaxies commonly lose substantial amounts of oxygen, they may also be important contributors to the chemical enrichment of the space between galaxies. The oxygen missing from a dwarf galaxy’s observable body could be part of the wider cosmic web of diffuse gas.

## What Future Observations Can Clarify

Hubble remains highly capable in ultraviolet and optical astronomy, including studies of ionized gas and star-forming regions. However, solving the full oxygen budget will likely require complementary observations across multiple wavelengths.

The James Webb Space Telescope can investigate infrared signatures of gas, dust, and star formation. Ground-based observatories can map gas and stellar populations over wide fields. X-ray missions can probe some of the hottest material, while ultraviolet studies remain particularly important for tracing ionized gas around galaxies.

Researchers will also need to compare observations with increasingly detailed simulations. These models can test whether supernova feedback is strong enough to expel oxygen, whether expelled material later returns, and how the results vary with a galaxy’s mass and star-formation history.

NASA’s report establishes the central observation: the 37 dwarf galaxies contain less detectable oxygen than expected. What remains uncertain is the precise location, temperature, and long-term fate of the unaccounted-for material.

That uncertainty is not a weakness of the result. It is the scientific opportunity created by it.

## A Missing-Element Mystery With Cosmic Consequences

The apparent oxygen deficit in nearby dwarf galaxies is more than an accounting problem. It is evidence that the flow of matter through small galaxies may be more dynamic than simple models suggest.

Oxygen is made in stars, distributed by stellar death, and incorporated into later generations of cosmic structures. Tracking where it goes helps astronomers reconstruct how galaxies evolve—and how the raw materials for planets and life became widespread in the universe.

Hubble’s survey of 37 nearby dwarf galaxies offers another reminder that galaxies are not closed containers. They exchange matter with their environments, and much of their history may be written in gas far beyond the stars we can easily see.
