Excerpt: A NASA Earth Observatory item describes an active Pacific storm period marked by Super Typhoon In-fa’s expansive eye and the remnants of Typhoon Champi evolving into an extratropical system near Alaska. Here is what those changes reveal about tropical cyclones, atmospheric transitions, and hazards across the North Pacific.

# The Pacific’s Busy Storm Season: In-fa’s Eye and Champi’s Alaska Transition

The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest connected weather engine, capable of generating powerful tropical cyclones in warm waters and then steering their remnants thousands of miles into higher latitudes.

A NASA Earth Observatory item titled “The Pacific’s Busy Storm Season” highlights two striking examples: Super Typhoon In-fa, which developed an unusually large eye, and the remnants of Typhoon Champi, which transitioned into an extratropical storm that targeted Alaska.

These are two different stages of the storm life cycle. In-fa represented an intense tropical cyclone over warm ocean water. Champi’s later evolution showed how a weakening tropical cyclone can still become a consequential weather system after moving away from the tropics.

The source summary provides limited details about timing, peak winds, landfalls, and observed impacts. It is therefore not possible, from the available information alone, to assess the exact intensity history of either storm or to attribute specific damage. What is clear is that both systems illustrate the Pacific basin’s ability to produce weather hazards across a very large geographic area.

## Why the Pacific Produces So Many Powerful Storms

Tropical cyclones require a specific set of ingredients: warm sea-surface temperatures, abundant atmospheric moisture, relatively low wind shear, and a pre-existing area of rotating disturbed weather.

The western North Pacific is especially favorable for cyclone development. It contains vast expanses of warm water and is widely regarded as the most active tropical-cyclone basin on Earth. Storms in this basin are generally called typhoons once they reach hurricane-strength winds, although the underlying type of storm is the same as a hurricane in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific.

When conditions are favorable, a cluster of thunderstorms can organize around a low-pressure center. As warm, moist air rises and condenses, it releases heat into the atmosphere. That released energy helps sustain the storm’s circulation and can lower surface pressure further.

The result can be a tightly organized cyclone with spiral rainbands, a dense central overcast of high clouds, and, in strong storms, a clear or partly clear eye.

## Super Typhoon In-fa’s Unusually Large Eye

According to the NASA source summary, Super Typhoon In-fa developed an unusually large eye. An eye is the relatively calm region near the center of a mature tropical cyclone, surrounded by the eyewall—the ring of intense thunderstorms where the strongest winds and heaviest rain are generally found.

Eyes vary dramatically in size. Some are only a few kilometers across, while others can span dozens of kilometers. A larger eye can be visually striking in satellite imagery, but eye diameter alone does not determine how dangerous or intense a storm is.

A storm’s threat depends on many factors, including:

– Maximum sustained wind speeds
– The size of the wind field
– Rainfall totals and terrain
– Storm motion
– Coastal exposure to storm surge
– The population and infrastructure in its path

Large eyes can form during structural changes in a tropical cyclone. One important process is an eyewall replacement cycle. In some intense storms, a new outer eyewall forms around the original inner eyewall. The inner eyewall may weaken while the outer ring contracts, sometimes leaving a larger eye for a period.

This process can temporarily reduce peak winds, but it may also expand the area exposed to damaging winds. Cyclones can re-intensify after an eyewall replacement cycle if environmental conditions remain favorable.

Without the full NASA article imagery and storm-analysis data, it would be premature to state exactly why In-fa’s eye expanded or whether it underwent an eyewall replacement cycle. Still, the observation is meteorologically important because eye structure offers scientists clues about a cyclone’s internal dynamics.

## Satellite Images Are Essential for Monitoring Remote Storms

Many Pacific storms remain far from land for much of their lives. Satellite observations are therefore essential for identifying storm formation, tracking movement, estimating intensity, and observing changes in cloud structure.

NASA satellites, as well as operational weather satellites managed by agencies such as NOAA and Japan’s Meteorological Agency, can reveal features including:

– The development of a central eye
– The symmetry of the storm’s cloud shield
– Deep convective towers in the eyewall
– Expanding or weakening rainbands
– The interaction between tropical systems and mid-latitude fronts

Visible-light imagery is particularly useful during daylight hours, while infrared imagery measures cloud-top temperatures day and night. Very cold cloud tops often indicate tall, vigorous thunderstorms. Microwave instruments can also help reveal precipitation structures beneath high clouds.

These observations support forecasts, but they also contribute to long-term research on cyclone behavior, rainfall, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and changing exposure to coastal hazards.

## Champi’s Shift From Tropical Cyclone to Extratropical Storm

The other storm described by NASA, Typhoon Champi, followed a different path. Its remnants transitioned into an extratropical storm that targeted Alaska.

This transformation is common in the North Pacific. A tropical cyclone draws much of its energy from warm ocean water and the release of heat inside thunderstorms near its center. An extratropical cyclone, by contrast, is powered primarily by strong temperature contrasts between air masses and by dynamics associated with the jet stream.

As a typhoon moves northward, it may enter cooler water and stronger upper-level winds. The storm can lose its compact, symmetrical tropical appearance and begin interacting with fronts. Its strongest winds and rainfall may shift away from the old center, while the system grows larger and becomes embedded in the broader mid-latitude weather pattern.

This process is called extratropical transition.

Transition does not necessarily mean a storm has become harmless. In fact, former tropical cyclones can become very large and energetic extratropical systems. They may bring heavy precipitation, strong winds, high surf, rough marine conditions, and, in colder regions, mountain snow.

## Why Alaska Can Be Affected by Former Typhoons

Alaska sits near the meeting point of North Pacific storms, Arctic air, mountain terrain, and extensive coastline. Low-pressure systems approaching from the Pacific can generate hazardous marine conditions and widespread precipitation, especially along southern and western parts of the state.

When a former typhoon enters the North Pacific jet-stream pattern, its moisture can be carried toward Alaska. This can contribute to an atmospheric-river-like plume of water vapor, although not every extratropical transition produces a formal atmospheric river event.

The effects depend heavily on the storm track. A system passing offshore may primarily produce large waves and coastal winds. A storm moving closer to land can bring stronger local impacts, including flooding rain, strong gusts, and disruptions to aviation or marine travel.

The NASA summary says Champi’s remnants “targeted Alaska,” but it does not specify where the system made its closest approach or what conditions were observed on the ground. Those details would need to be confirmed through National Weather Service reports, satellite archives, and post-storm assessments.

## What These Storms Show About a Connected Atmosphere

In-fa and Champi demonstrate that Pacific storms should not be viewed as isolated events. Tropical and extratropical weather systems are part of a connected atmosphere and ocean system.

A typhoon’s structure can evolve rapidly over warm tropical water. Days later, its leftover moisture and energy may be absorbed into a much larger weather pattern over the North Pacific. That transformed storm can then affect regions far from where the original cyclone formed.

For forecasters, this creates a demanding challenge. They must evaluate the short-term behavior of the tropical cyclone, its interaction with surrounding weather systems, and the consequences of its transition at higher latitudes.

For the public, the key lesson is simpler: storm categories and names do not always tell the complete story. A system that is no longer classified as a typhoon can still create significant hazards.

## The Value of Continued Storm Observation

Better satellite coverage, ocean measurements, aircraft reconnaissance where available, weather models, and ground-based observations have all improved cyclone forecasting. Yet uncertainty remains, especially when storms rapidly intensify, reorganize internally, or transition into complex mid-latitude systems.

NASA’s observation of In-fa’s large eye and Champi’s transition is a useful reminder that storm monitoring is not only about identifying the strongest winds at a single moment. It is also about understanding how storms change, how far their effects can travel, and which communities may face risk as their structure evolves.
