## NASA Plans Live Earth-to-Space Call With Florida Students

NASA says students in Florida will have the chance to hear questions answered by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during a scheduled educational event on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

According to the agency’s announcement, NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney will respond to prerecorded science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) questions submitted by students. The Earth-to-space call is expected to begin at 10:40 a.m. EST and will be streamed through NASA’s Learn With NASA YouTube channel.

Freedom Crossing Academy in Florida is hosting the event. NASA’s source summary does not specify which student questions will be selected, the expected duration of the call, or the astronauts’ precise station roles at the time of the event. Those details may be announced closer to the broadcast.

The planned conversation is part of NASA’s broader educational outreach effort, which brings students into direct contact with people living and working in orbit.

## Why Calls to the Space Station Matter

An Earth-to-space call may appear simple: students ask questions, astronauts answer them. But the format gives classroom lessons a connection to an active scientific laboratory roughly 400 kilometers above Earth.

The International Space Station is used for research in microgravity, a condition often described as near-weightlessness. It is not a place without gravity. Rather, the station and its crew are continuously falling around Earth while moving forward fast enough to remain in orbit. This creates the environment researchers use to study physical, biological and technological processes that can be difficult to examine on the ground.

Astronauts can explain what that environment feels like and how it changes ordinary activities. They may discuss how food and water are managed, why objects float, how exercise helps protect bones and muscles, or how crews conduct experiments safely inside a spacecraft.

For students, those subjects can make STEM concepts more concrete. A lesson about forces and orbital motion becomes more immediate when the explanation comes from someone looking down at Earth from the station’s windows.

NASA has long used live and recorded astronaut interactions as a way to support STEM education. The agency’s education programming aims not only to explain space missions, but also to show students the many careers involved in them. Human spaceflight depends on engineers, scientists, flight controllers, medical specialists, software developers, technicians, educators and many other professionals.

## The International Space Station as a Classroom and Laboratory

The ISS is one of the most visible examples of international cooperation in space. Its partners include the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and participating European nations through the European Space Agency.

Crews aboard the station conduct experiments in fields including human health, materials science, fluid physics, combustion, plant biology and Earth observation. Some experiments are designed to help prepare for longer missions farther from Earth, including future exploration of the Moon and Mars. Others investigate questions that may have practical benefits for life on Earth.

Microgravity can affect cells, fluids, flames and materials in ways that are not easily reproduced in conventional laboratories. For example, researchers can study how the human body changes during long stays in space, including shifts in fluid distribution, changes in muscle mass and bone density, and the challenges of maintaining health in a confined environment.

The station also serves as a platform for observing Earth. Astronaut photography and scientific instruments can document storms, coastlines, wildfires, agricultural regions and changing landscapes. These observations complement data gathered by satellites and ground-based monitoring systems.

A student asking, “What do astronauts do all day?” could receive an answer that covers far more than spacewalks or looking out a window. Daily work aboard the ISS can include conducting experiments, maintaining equipment, exercising, communicating with mission control, preparing meals and participating in emergency training.

## Jessica Watkins and the Value of Astronaut Perspectives

Jessica Watkins is a NASA astronaut, geologist and former International Space Station crew member. Her background illustrates the range of scientific expertise represented in the astronaut corps.

Before becoming an astronaut, Watkins studied geological and planetary sciences and worked on research related to Mars. She was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in 2017 and later served as a mission specialist on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission, which launched to the ISS in 2022.

Her experience provides a useful link between planetary science and human spaceflight. Geologists help scientists understand the history of planets and moons through rocks, landscapes and processes such as volcanism, erosion and impact cratering. That field is also relevant to NASA’s long-term exploration goals, since future crews visiting the Moon or Mars may need to conduct field science in unfamiliar environments.

NASA’s announcement also names Luke Delaney as participating in the student event. The supplied source summary does not provide biographical details about Delaney, his astronaut background, or the mission assignment connected to the call. Readers seeking the most current information should consult NASA’s event page and astronaut profiles before the broadcast.

That distinction matters because astronaut assignments, launch schedules and station crew rotations can change for operational, technical, medical or weather-related reasons.

## How Students Can Get the Most From the Broadcast

The event will feature prerecorded questions, meaning the questions have been submitted in advance rather than asked live during the stream. That structure helps NASA manage communications schedules and allows schools to organize an event around a limited connection window.

Students watching the broadcast can still participate actively by preparing their own questions beforehand. Good space-science questions are often specific and based on an observation or a classroom topic.

Examples include:

– How does microgravity change the way plants grow?
– What kinds of repairs can astronauts perform on the station?
– How does the crew communicate with mission control?
– What happens if an astronaut gets sick in orbit?
– How do astronauts prepare for experiments before launch?
– Which school subjects are most useful for careers in space exploration?

Teachers can extend the event with activities on orbital mechanics, recycling systems, astronaut exercise, nutrition, Earth observation or the design of closed-loop life-support systems.

The ISS is particularly well suited to these lessons because it combines advanced technology with practical constraints. Every kilogram of equipment, every supply shipment and every use of power or water must be carefully planned. That makes the station a real-world example of engineering tradeoffs and resource management.

## A Reminder That Space Exploration Is a Team Effort

Public conversations with astronauts can create the impression that spaceflight is mainly about individual explorers. In reality, each ISS mission relies on extensive teams on Earth.

Mission control personnel monitor spacecraft systems and coordinate activities. Engineers design and test hardware. Scientists develop experiments and analyze data. Medical teams support astronaut health. Launch providers, international partners and station crews all contribute to the mission.

For students, this is one of the most important messages behind an Earth-to-space call: there is no single route into space-related work. A future role in exploration might begin with an interest in coding, biology, art and communications, mechanical engineering, environmental science or medicine.

NASA’s planned connection with Freedom Crossing Academy offers a direct look at that larger ecosystem. By hearing from people currently living and working in orbit, students can see how classroom subjects relate to real missions beyond Earth.

## What Is Known About the Nov. 10 Event

NASA’s announcement states that the call is scheduled for 10:40 a.m. EST on Tuesday, Nov. 10, and that it will be available via the Learn With NASA YouTube channel. Freedom Crossing Academy is identified as the host school, while Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney are named as the astronauts expected to answer student STEM questions.

The available summary does not identify the exact question list, expected broadcast length, whether the full event will remain available as a recording, or any contingency plans if the schedule changes. Viewers should check NASA’s official event page and Learn With NASA channels for final timing and viewing information.
