## Mars Express Takes a Virtual Flight Around Schiaparelli Crater

The European Space Agency has released a new Mars Express visualisation that circles Schiaparelli Crater, a vast impact structure in Mars’s equatorial region. At roughly 460 kilometres (286 miles) across, Schiaparelli is among the largest craters on the planet. Yet, despite its enormous diameter, it does not look as deep or sharply defined as many smaller, younger Martian craters.

The four-minute animation is not footage captured by a spacecraft flying low over the landscape. Instead, it is a carefully constructed three-dimensional visualisation made from images and elevation data gathered by Mars Express’s High Resolution Stereo Camera, or HRSC.

That distinction matters. The video is a scientifically informed rendering of real orbital measurements, designed to make the scale and topography of the crater easier to understand. It also uses added atmospheric haze and a threefold vertical exaggeration, meaning slopes and relief appear more dramatic than they would at true scale.

Even with those presentation choices, Schiaparelli Crater remains a striking example of how Mars preserves evidence of impacts, wind-driven sediment movement, possible ancient water activity and perhaps volcanic resurfacing over billions of years.

## A Giant Basin That Looks Surprisingly Shallow

Schiaparelli Crater lies near 8° south latitude and 17° east longitude, in a part of Mars that has experienced a long and complicated geological history. The crater’s size points to an ancient, high-energy impact early in the planet’s past. A collision large enough to create a basin hundreds of kilometres wide would have excavated an enormous volume of rock and reshaped the surrounding terrain.

Today, however, the crater appears relatively subdued. Its rim is not as prominent as might be expected for a feature of its diameter, and much of its interior seems to have been filled or modified.

ESA notes several possible explanations. Over the last few billion years, the crater may have accumulated sediment transported by wind, deposited material associated with water, lava flows, or some combination of these processes. Each mechanism could gradually reduce the apparent depth of the basin.

Wind is an especially powerful landscape-shaping force on Mars. Although the atmosphere is thin, it can lift fine dust and sand, form dunes, abrade exposed rocks and transport sediment across long distances. Repeated dust storms and seasonal winds may help fill low-lying terrain over geological time.

Water may also have played a role. Mars is cold and dry today, but abundant evidence indicates that rivers, lakes, groundwater systems and possibly shallow seas existed at different times in the planet’s early history. Schiaparelli’s location and morphology have made it a region of interest for scientists studying whether the crater once hosted a lake or received sediments carried by ancient water.

Lava is another possibility. Volcanic materials can bury older landscapes, smooth basin floors and obscure impact-related structures. Determining the precise contribution of each process requires comparisons among mineral maps, imagery, elevation models and crater-count dating studies.

## What the Mars Express Animation Actually Shows

The flyover was produced using the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera Mars Chart, known as HMC-30. This global mapping effort combines multiple HRSC observations into mosaics that provide both colour surface imagery and three-dimensional topographic information.

For the Schiaparelli visualisation, researchers used an image mosaic centred on the crater region and paired it with a digital terrain model. The result is a simulated camera journey through a reconstructed Martian landscape.

According to ESA’s processing notes, 50 individual frames were rendered for every second of the finished movie. The creators followed a predefined virtual camera path around the scene, producing the sensation of an aerial flight.

The film also includes atmospheric effects such as haze and clouds. These are not direct observations of weather above Schiaparelli at the time of imaging. They were added partly to create a more natural-looking scene and to conceal the outer limits of the available terrain model. Haze begins to build at distances of about 250 kilometres in the rendering.

Most importantly, the terrain is vertically exaggerated by a factor of three. Vertical exaggeration is common in planetary mapping because natural landscapes can look flatter than viewers expect when displayed over a large area. Mars is a globe-sized planet, and even major landforms may have gentle slopes spread across hundreds of kilometres.

The technique improves visual clarity, but it means the animation should not be interpreted as a literal human-eye view from a low-flying aircraft.

## The Crater’s Name and the “Canali” Misunderstanding

Schiaparelli Crater is named after Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who lived from 1835 to 1910. He made influential observations of Mars during the Great Opposition of 1877, when the planet was relatively close to Earth and especially favourable for telescopic study.

Schiaparelli mapped a network of dark linear features that he described with the Italian word *canali*. In Italian, the term can mean channels or grooves. But when it was translated into English as “canals,” it helped fuel speculation that Mars contained artificial waterways built by an advanced civilisation.

The idea was amplified by some later observers, most famously Percival Lowell, and it became deeply embedded in science fiction and public imagination. The supposed canals, however, were not real engineered structures. They were visual illusions created by the limits of 19th-century telescopes, atmospheric distortion and the human tendency to connect faint markings into lines.

Modern spacecraft images show no artificial canal network and no present-day surface channels filled with flowing water. Still, the original controversy had an enduring effect: it encouraged generations of people to think of Mars as a potentially inhabited and geologically active world.

In a sense, the historical question was wrong, but the curiosity behind it was productive. Mars really did have a more water-rich past than once assumed, though its ancient environments were far more complex than the imagined canal civilisation.

## Why Schiaparelli Matters for Mars Science

Large impact craters are more than scars from collisions. They are natural geological archives.

An impact can expose buried layers, create fractures that later guide groundwater movement, and form low areas where sediments accumulate. Over time, those sediments may preserve a record of environmental changes. In a region such as Schiaparelli, scientists can study the relationships between impact processes and later erosion, deposition and possible aqueous activity.

The crater also illustrates a central challenge in Martian geology: landscapes rarely reflect just one event. A large impact may create the initial basin, but billions of years of wind, dust, water-related alteration, smaller impacts and volcanic processes can transform it.

Mars Express has been observing the Red Planet since entering orbit in late 2003. Its HRSC instrument has been particularly valuable because stereo imaging allows researchers to build detailed digital elevation models rather than relying only on flat photographs. These datasets help planetary scientists measure crater rims, valley networks, layered deposits, volcanoes and polar terrain across large areas.

The Schiaparelli flyover turns that technical mapping work into a format accessible to non-specialists. It gives viewers a sense of the crater’s immense scale while highlighting questions that remain unresolved.

## A Familiar Destination for Fans of *The Martian*

Schiaparelli Crater also has a place in modern popular culture. In Andy Weir’s novel *The Martian*, astronaut Mark Watney travels toward Schiaparelli as part of his effort to reach a spacecraft that could return him to orbit.

The fictional journey takes major creative liberties, as all good survival stories do. But its use of a real Martian location helped connect readers with the actual geography of Mars.

The real Schiaparelli is not a ready-made exploration site, and no human mission has visited it. Yet its broad basin, ancient terrain and possible history of sedimentary infill make it scientifically compelling. Future orbital studies—and potentially distant human exploration campaigns—could continue to refine our understanding of how this enormous crater evolved.

## A Reminder That Mars Is Still Being Mapped

Mars may be one of the most studied worlds beyond Earth, but it is far from fully understood. High-resolution orbital datasets continually reveal new details, while improved processing methods let researchers revisit known places with fresh questions.

Schiaparelli Crater is a good example. Its existence has been known for decades, but its shallow form raises enduring questions about what filled it, when that filling occurred and whether water, wind or volcanism was most important.

ESA’s new visualisation does not settle those questions. What it does provide is a valuable, data-based perspective on a landscape too large to grasp from a single image. It is a reminder that Mars’s surface is not static: even ancient impact basins are products of long, overlapping planetary processes.
