A total solar eclipse crossed parts of Europe on 12 August 2026, giving observers along a narrow path the rare chance to see the Sun’s bright disk fully covered by the Moon. The European Space Agency (ESA) marked the occasion with an official live broadcast from the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre in Spain.

The 70-minute programme combined live telescope imagery, interviews and explanations of eclipse science. Hosted by space scientist and broadcaster Dame Dr Maggie Aderin, it featured ESA Director of Science Carole Mundell and other specialists discussing the Sun, eclipses, space weather and ESA’s research activities.

They offer natural views at wavelengths and spatial scales that can complement satellite observations, while also giving researchers an opportunity to test instruments and compare measurements.

The 2026 eclipse broadcast also placed the event in the broader context of solar physics. Understanding the Sun is not simply an academic exercise. Solar activity influences the space environment around Earth and can affect technologies used every day.

## Eclipses, Space Weather and Technology on Earth

The Sun constantly releases charged particles and magnetic fields into the Solar System. Most of the time, Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field provide effective protection. However, periods of heightened solar activity can produce space-weather effects that interfere with satellite operations, navigation signals, high-frequency radio communications and power systems.

A total eclipse does not cause harmful space weather. Instead, it offers an accessible way to discuss the Sun’s influence and the importance of monitoring solar conditions.

ESA and other space agencies operate missions and ground systems that track the Sun and its effects. ESA’s Solar Orbiter mission, for example, studies the Sun from close range and observes its poles as well as the solar atmosphere. Combined with data from NASA missions, terrestrial observatories and solar-monitoring networks, these measurements help scientists understand how activity on the Sun develops and propagates through space.

The eclipse therefore served as a public-facing event with a serious scientific theme: conditions in space are part of Earth’s technological environment.

## A Shared European Astronomy Moment

A solar eclipse should never be viewed directly without certified solar filters. Ordinary sunglasses, exposed photographic film, tinted glass and improvised filters do not provide adequate protection.

For a partial eclipse, approved eclipse glasses or suitable solar filters must be used at all times. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need purpose-built solar filters fitted securely to the front of the instrument. Looking at the Sun through an unfiltered optical device can cause severe eye injury very quickly.

During the short period of totality, direct viewing without eclipse glasses is generally possible only when the Sun is completely covered and only for people located inside the path of totality. The moment bright sunlight returns—often visible as a “diamond ring” effect—eye protection must be used again immediately.

The safest approach for future eclipses is to check guidance from recognised astronomical organisations and local authorities, particularly if travelling to a viewing site.

## Why ESA’s Broadcast Matters

ESA’s official coverage did more than document a dramatic astronomical event. It connected a fleeting alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth with long-term scientific questions about the solar corona, Earth’s atmosphere and space weather.

Live telescope feeds and expert interviews make these events more accessible, but they also show how astronomy works: through careful observation, specialised instruments, international collaboration and comparison with data collected in space.

The 2026 total solar eclipse lasted only minutes at any one point along its path. Its scientific and educational value, however, extends much longer. It offers a vivid demonstration that the Sun is a dynamic star, Earth is part of a wider space environment, and even a predictable celestial event can help inspire new audiences to engage with science.
