# NASA’s Roman Space Telescope Will Take a Wide-Angle View of the Cosmos

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is being built to do something that even powerful space observatories such as Hubble were not primarily designed to do: survey enormous regions of the sky with sharp, infrared-sensitive vision.

An ESA image overview published on August 25, 2026, describes Roman as a mission that will scan a large patch of the sky in visible and near-infrared light. Its central science goals include investigating dark energy and dark matter, while also finding planets orbiting other stars.

Roman is a NASA-led mission, with the European Space Agency participating as a Mission of Opportunity. ESA’s contribution includes scientific expertise, guidance, hardware support and use of its deep-space communications network.

## A 2.4-Metre Mirror With a Much Wider View

But Roman’s distinguishing feature is not simply its mirror. It is the combination of that mirror with a large, modern camera system designed for wide surveys.

## Why Roman Will Study Dark Energy

Dark energy is the name given to the unknown phenomenon associated with the accelerating expansion of the Universe. Observations show that the Universe’s expansion is speeding up, rather than slowing under the pull of gravity alone. Scientists do not yet know whether this acceleration is caused by a new form of energy, a property of space itself, or an incomplete understanding of gravity on cosmic scales.

Roman will investigate this question using several complementary methods.

### Tracking distant supernovae

One approach uses Type Ia supernovae, exploding stars that can serve as distance indicators. By comparing their apparent brightness with their redshift — the stretching of their light as the Universe expands — astronomers can reconstruct how cosmic expansion has changed over time.

Roman’s infrared capability is particularly helpful for this work. Infrared observations can reduce some of the effects of dust and allow scientists to study distant objects whose light has been shifted toward longer wavelengths during its journey through expanding space.

### Mapping the distribution of galaxies

Roman will also measure the positions and distances of huge numbers of galaxies. The resulting maps can reveal patterns in the large-scale structure of the Universe, including faint traces of early-universe sound waves known as baryon acoustic oscillations.

These patterns act as a kind of cosmic measuring stick. Comparing their apparent size at different epochs helps researchers test the expansion history of the Universe.

### Measuring weak gravitational lensing

A third technique is weak gravitational lensing. Matter bends the path of light, so the gravity of galaxies and dark matter slightly distorts the shapes of more distant galaxies behind them.

The effect is extremely subtle for any single galaxy. It becomes useful when measured statistically across very large samples. Roman’s stable, high-resolution wide-field images are designed to help astronomers map these small distortions and infer how matter is distributed throughout the cosmos.

Together, these methods can test whether dark energy behaves consistently over cosmic time and whether general relativity accurately describes gravity on the largest scales.

## Dark Matter Maps From Distorted Light

Dark matter does not appear to emit, absorb or reflect light in a way telescopes can directly detect. Yet its gravitational effects are visible in galaxy rotation, galaxy clusters and lensing measurements.

Roman will contribute to dark matter studies by observing how foreground matter bends the light from background galaxies. Since gravitational lensing responds to all mass, including unseen mass, it can help scientists map the total matter distribution rather than just the ordinary matter visible in stars and gas.

This is one reason wide surveys are so valuable. Dark matter is not evenly spread through space. It gathers around galaxies and along large cosmic filaments, creating a vast web-like structure. Roman’s surveys could provide detailed statistical measurements of how that structure has grown over billions of years.

Those measurements are relevant to both dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter helps pull structures together through gravity, while dark energy influences the rate at which the Universe expands. Studying their combined effects is a major goal of modern cosmology.

## Finding Exoplanets Through Microlensing

Roman will also search for exoplanets, especially through a technique called gravitational microlensing.

Microlensing occurs when a foreground star passes nearly in front of a more distant background star. The foreground star’s gravity bends and magnifies the background star’s light for a short time. If the foreground star has a planet, that planet can create an additional, brief signature in the light curve.

This method differs from transit observations, which look for a small dip in starlight when a planet crosses in front of its star. It also differs from radial-velocity studies, which detect the gravitational tug of planets on their host stars.

Microlensing is especially valuable because it can find planets farther from their stars than many transit surveys can easily detect. It may also detect planets around stars that are faint or distant, as well as free-floating planets that no longer orbit a star.

Roman is expected to monitor crowded star fields toward the center of the Milky Way, where the chance of microlensing alignments is higher. The method is not generally suited to repeated observations of the same planetary system after discovery, because the alignment is usually a one-time event. Still, it offers a powerful way to measure the broader population of planets in the galaxy.

## The Coronagraph Is a Technology Demonstration

Roman’s second instrument is the Coronagraph Instrument. Unlike the Wide Field Instrument, it is primarily a technology demonstrator.

A coronagraph blocks the overwhelming glare of a star, making it easier to see faint material or objects nearby. This is a difficult task: an Earth-like planet is vastly dimmer than the star it orbits, and appears extremely close to it from our viewpoint.

Roman’s coronagraph is intended to demonstrate advanced methods for suppressing starlight and precisely controlling distortions in the telescope’s optical system. It may observe some large exoplanets and debris disks, but its most important role is to mature techniques for potential future missions that could directly image planets more like Earth.

That distinction matters. Roman is expected to make important exoplanet discoveries through microlensing, while its coronagraph is a pathfinder for the next generation of direct-imaging observatories.
