# NASA’s COSI Gamma-Ray Telescope Comes Together at UC Berkeley

A major instrument component for NASA’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager, or COSI, is taking shape at the University of California, Berkeley.

In an image dated July 8, 2026, UC Berkeley engineers and mission managers watch as COSI’s detector assembly is carefully lifted from a worktable. The assembly contains the sensitive hardware that will detect incoming gamma rays from cosmic sources after the observatory reaches space.

## What Is COSI?

Gamma rays are produced in extreme environments. They can emerge from radioactive material created in stellar explosions, matter falling toward compact objects, powerful jets from distant galaxies, and short-lived bursts associated with some of the universe’s most violent events.

Unlike visible light, gamma rays cannot be focused with ordinary glass mirrors or conventional telescope lenses. They require specialized detectors and reconstruction techniques. COSI is designed to use interactions inside its detector array to determine both the energy and probable direction of incoming gamma rays.

The mission is particularly suited to observations in the “soft gamma-ray” and MeV, or megaelectronvolt, energy range. This region is scientifically valuable but has historically been difficult to study with the same sensitivity achieved at some other wavelengths.

## Why the Detector Assembly Matters

The detector assembly is at the center of COSI’s scientific capabilities.

COSI uses germanium detectors, which are valued for their ability to measure gamma-ray energies with high precision. When an electron meets its antimatter counterpart, a positron, the pair can annihilate and produce gamma rays with an energy of 511 kiloelectronvolts. Astronomers have observed this emission from the central regions of the Milky Way for decades.

However, the origin of many of those positrons remains uncertain.

Possible contributors include radioactive isotopes from stellar explosions, binary star systems containing compact objects, pulsars, and other astrophysical sources. Researchers have also examined whether more exotic processes could play a role. Existing observations provide important constraints, but the distribution of the emission and its relationship to possible source populations are not fully resolved.

COSI is expected to produce improved maps of this 511-keV gamma-ray glow. Better mapping could help scientists determine whether positrons are produced mainly in the Milky Way’s bulge, disk, or specific categories of sources.

That does not mean COSI is expected to “solve” the antimatter mystery by itself. Its data will need to be compared with observations at X-ray, radio, optical, infrared, and other wavelengths. But a more detailed gamma-ray view could substantially narrow the possibilities.

## Reading the Radioactive History of Stellar Explosions

COSI will also look for gamma-ray lines from radioactive isotopes made in massive stars and supernova explosions.

Elements heavier than hydrogen and helium are forged through stellar evolution and explosive events. Some newly created isotopes are unstable, meaning they decay over time and emit gamma rays at characteristic energies. These emissions give astronomers a direct way to trace material freshly produced by stellar processes.

One target is aluminum-26, a radioactive isotope distributed across the Milky Way. Its gamma-ray emission has been used to trace regions where massive stars have lived and died relatively recently on galactic timescales.

Another important isotope is iron-60. Comparing the gamma-ray signals from aluminum-26 and iron-60 can help researchers test models of nucleosynthesis: the processes that create chemical elements inside stars and supernovae.

These studies address a broad question with direct relevance to cosmic history: how did the raw materials for planets, atmospheres, and life become distributed through galaxies?

## Gamma-Ray Bursts and Polarization

COSI is also designed to detect and study gamma-ray bursts, brief flashes that can release enormous amounts of energy.

Some gamma-ray bursts are linked to the collapse of massive stars, while others are associated with mergers involving neutron stars. The latter type gained special prominence after astronomers detected gravitational waves and light from a neutron-star merger in 2017.

COSI’s ability to measure polarization could add a valuable dimension to these observations. Polarization describes the orientation properties of light waves. In gamma rays, polarization measurements can reveal information about magnetic fields and particle acceleration in the jets that may power some bursts.

Such measurements are technically challenging, which is why new data in this area could be especially useful. COSI will not observe every gamma-ray burst, and its eventual performance will depend on operational conditions in space. Still, its instrument design is intended to expand the available set of polarization observations.

## What Is Known — and What Is Not Yet Known

NASA’s image confirms that the detector assembly was being integrated and handled at UC Berkeley in July 2026. The visible flex circuits are part of the electronics pathway connecting detectors to readout systems.

The image itself does not provide a full mission-status update, a launch date, or test results for the assembled hardware. It also does not establish that the telescope is ready for flight. Instrument development typically includes additional integration, environmental testing, calibration, and spacecraft-level work before launch.

That distinction matters. A carefully raised detector assembly is an important engineering milestone, but it is one step in a long process of preparing a scientific observatory for space.

## Why COSI Is Significant

COSI represents NASA’s continued investment in missions that fill observational gaps rather than duplicate the capabilities of existing telescopes.

Visible-light observatories show stars and galaxies. Infrared missions reveal cool dust and distant redshifted objects. X-ray telescopes investigate hot gas and accreting black holes. Gamma-ray instruments, meanwhile, probe radioactive decay, relativistic particles, antimatter annihilation, and the most energetic astrophysical processes.

By focusing on the MeV gamma-ray range and combining spectroscopy, imaging, and polarization measurements, COSI is designed to make several kinds of observations with one instrument.

As its detector hardware comes together, the mission moves closer to providing a new view of the energetic universe—and potentially to answering questions that have remained open since the earliest gamma-ray maps of the Milky Way.
