# Pa 30: The Unusual Supernova Remnant That May Explain a Medieval Skywatching Record

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for October 7, 2026, is titled *Supernova Remnant Pa 30*. The supplied listing identifies the subject but does not include the full APOD caption, image credit, observing wavelength, or telescope details. That means the specific features shown in the APOD image cannot be confirmed from the source summary alone.

What is well established is that Pa 30 is an unusually interesting supernova remnant in the Milky Way. It is a roughly circular cloud of expanding material with a rare, extremely hot central star. Researchers have proposed that the system is the surviving evidence of the stellar explosion recorded by observers in China and Japan in the year 1181.

If that connection is correct, Pa 30 would offer astronomers a valuable opportunity: a chance to compare historical observations of a “new star” with the physical remains of the explosion more than eight centuries later.

## What Is Pa 30?

Pa 30, also known as Patchick 30, is a nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It was first recognized as an unusual object through observations that revealed a faint shell around a distinctive central star.

A supernova remnant forms when material expelled by a stellar explosion plows into surrounding interstellar gas. Such remnants can shine across the electromagnetic spectrum, including radio waves, visible light, X-rays, and infrared light. Their appearance and chemical composition preserve clues to the type of explosion that created them.

Pa 30 stands out because its shell appears to be expanding at very high speeds, and because the star at its center is not an ordinary star. The central object, often identified in scientific literature as Parker’s star, is extremely hot and produces a powerful stellar wind.

That combination—a rapidly expanding remnant and an unusually energetic central star—has led astronomers to investigate whether Pa 30 came from a nonstandard kind of thermonuclear supernova.

## A Possible Match for the Supernova of 1181

Historical astronomical records describe a “guest star” that appeared in 1181. In the language of East Asian astronomy, a guest star could refer to a comet, nova, or supernova. The object recorded that year was reportedly visible for about six months, making a supernova interpretation plausible.

For decades, astronomers searched for the remnant of this event. A different nebula, 3C 58, was once widely proposed as the likely candidate. However, estimates of its age and expansion history raised questions about whether it could actually be associated with the event of 1181.

Pa 30 emerged as a stronger candidate after researchers compared several lines of evidence:

– Its location is broadly consistent with the historical descriptions.
– Its estimated age is compatible with an explosion occurring around the late 12th century.
– The remnant’s rapid expansion suggests a relatively recent stellar explosion.
– The central star’s unusual nature may fit an uncommon thermonuclear supernova scenario.

The case is compelling, but it should not be presented as fully settled. Historical records are not precise modern sky coordinates, and estimates of a remnant’s age depend on models of its expansion, distance, and interaction with surrounding gas. Further measurements are needed to test the identification.

## Why the Central Star Is So Important

Most supernova remnants contain either no easily visible stellar survivor or, in the case of core-collapse supernovae, a neutron star or black hole. Pa 30 may be different.

Its central star is exceptionally hot, with a temperature estimated at well over 100,000 degrees Celsius. It also has a fast, strong outflow of gas. These properties are unusual enough to suggest that the object may be a partially surviving remnant of a white-dwarf merger.

White dwarfs are the dense cores left behind after Sun-like stars exhaust their nuclear fuel. In some binary systems, two white dwarfs can spiral together and merge. Depending on their masses and the details of the merger, the result may be a thermonuclear explosion.

A fully disruptive Type Ia supernova typically destroys the white dwarf entirely. But some less energetic events may leave behind a bound remnant. Pa 30 has been discussed as a possible example of such an outcome.

## Could Pa 30 Be the Result of a Type Iax Supernova?

One leading explanation links Pa 30 to a Type Iax supernova. Type Iax events are related to Type Ia supernovae, which occur when a white dwarf undergoes runaway thermonuclear burning. Unlike standard Type Ia events, Type Iax supernovae are generally less luminous and less energetic.

In some models, a Type Iax explosion fails to unbind the entire white dwarf. The blast ejects some stellar material, while a hot, altered remnant remains behind. This possibility could help explain both major components of Pa 30: the expanding nebula and the extraordinary central star.

However, the precise explosion mechanism remains an active research question. Some studies have favored a merger involving two white dwarfs rather than a single white dwarf accreting matter from a companion. These scenarios overlap in important ways but make different predictions about the object’s mass, chemistry, ejecta, and long-term evolution.

Determining which model is correct requires better constraints on the remnant’s composition and motion.

## What Astronomers Can Learn From Pa 30

Pa 30 matters beyond the question of whether it is tied to the 1181 guest star. It may help astronomers understand a poorly sampled class of stellar explosions.

Most supernova research relies on distant events seen shortly after they occur. Astronomers measure their brightness, collect spectra, and compare the observations with theoretical models. But once a supernova fades, the long-term condition of its debris and any surviving star can be difficult to study.

Pa 30 offers a nearby laboratory for examining an explosion centuries after the event. Its nebular filaments can reveal how ejected material is moving and cooling. Spectroscopy can identify elements in the shell and assess whether they match thermonuclear burning products. Measurements of the central star can test whether it is a surviving white dwarf remnant, a merger product, or something else.

The object also illustrates why historical records remain scientifically useful. Medieval observers had no telescopes, cameras, or spectrographs, but careful written accounts can preserve information about transient celestial events. When those reports are combined with modern imaging, astrometry, and spectroscopy, they can connect human observations across many centuries.

## Reading an APOD Image Carefully

APOD images are designed to make astronomical discoveries accessible, but a beautiful image is not always a complete scientific dataset. Different wavelengths reveal different components of a supernova remnant.

Visible-light observations may trace ionized gas and glowing filaments. Infrared data can reveal cooler dust. X-rays can show extremely hot gas or high-energy particles. Narrowband imaging can emphasize specific atomic emissions, such as hydrogen, oxygen, or sulfur.

Because the supplied source summary does not specify the image’s wavelength, processing method, or observatory, viewers
