# NASA Previews Its Contributions to JAXA’s Martian Moons Mission

NASA plans to brief media on its contributions to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Martian Moons eXploration mission, better known as MMX. The JAXA-led mission is intended to explore Mars’ two small moons, Phobos and Deimos, with a major goal of collecting material from Phobos and bringing it back to Earth.

According to NASA’s briefing announcement, the agency’s teleconference is scheduled for Oct. 15, ahead of a planned MMX launch from JAXA’s Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on Oct. 19 Eastern Daylight Time, or Oct. 20 in Japan Standard Time.

The source item is a briefing notice rather than a mission-status report. It identifies the planned launch timing and NASA’s intention to discuss its contributions, but it does not confirm that launch has occurred or provide a complete update on final spacecraft readiness. Launch dates can change because of weather, technical checks, range availability, or other operational considerations.

Even so, MMX is one of the most scientifically important planned missions to the Mars system. It could provide the first samples returned from a Martian moon and help researchers address a long-standing planetary-science question: where did Phobos and Deimos come from?

## What Is the MMX Mission?

MMX is an international mission led by JAXA. Its central objectives are to investigate the origin and evolution of Phobos and Deimos, study their relationship with Mars, and return a sample from Phobos to Earth.

Phobos and Deimos are dramatically different from Earth’s Moon. Both are small, irregularly shaped bodies with dark surfaces. Phobos, the larger of the two, is roughly 27 kilometers across at its widest point. It orbits Mars exceptionally closely, completing an orbit in less than eight hours.

The spacecraft is designed to travel to the Martian system, observe both moons, enter orbit around Phobos, and land on its surface. It is expected to collect at least several grams of surface material for return to Earth. JAXA has previously demonstrated complex sample-return operations through its Hayabusa and Hayabusa2 asteroid missions, which returned material from the asteroids Itokawa and Ryugu.

A successful MMX sample return would extend that experience to the environment around Mars.

### Why Sample Phobos Instead of Mars?

Phobos itself is a compelling target, but it may also preserve clues about Mars.

Material ejected from Mars by ancient impacts could have reached Phobos over billions of years. Some of that material may remain mixed into the moon’s surface regolith, the loose dust and fragmented rock covering its terrain. That means a Phobos sample could contain small amounts of Martian material without requiring a spacecraft to land directly on Mars.

Scientists would need to carefully distinguish native Phobos grains from possible Martian ejecta. But if such material is present, it could provide a new route for investigating Mars’ geological past, including periods when the planet may have been wetter and more habitable than it is today.

## NASA’s Contributions to MMX

NASA is a partner in the JAXA-led mission, contributing instruments and expertise rather than leading the overall spacecraft and sample-return architecture.

One key NASA contribution is MEGANE, short for Mars-moon Exploration with GAmma rays and NEutrons. The instrument is designed to measure gamma rays and neutrons emitted from the surface of Phobos.

These measurements can reveal information about the elemental composition of surface materials. In particular, neutron data can help scientists look for hydrogen, which may indicate the presence of water-bearing minerals or other hydrated material. Gamma-ray observations can help identify elements such as iron, silicon, potassium, thorium, and others.

MEGANE is expected to help map compositional differences across Phobos. Those maps could guide scientific interpretation of the returned sample by showing how the landing region compares with other areas of the moon.

NASA has also supported MMX sample-collection technology through its Pneumatic Sampler, or P-Sampler. A pneumatic system uses pressurized gas to help transfer loose surface material into a collection container. This approach is particularly useful in the very low gravity of Phobos, where ordinary digging and handling methods can be more challenging than they are on Earth.

The precise operational role and final mission configuration of NASA-provided hardware should be assessed using updated information from NASA and JAXA as launch approaches. A pre-launch briefing is an opportunity for agencies to clarify these details.

## The Mystery of the Martian Moons’ Origins

The origins of Phobos and Deimos remain unresolved. Their small size, dark color, and irregular appearance once led many scientists to consider whether they could be captured asteroids.

That explanation has difficulties. Capturing an asteroid into the relatively circular, near-equatorial orbits of Phobos and Deimos would require a mechanism to remove energy from the objects. Researchers have proposed several possibilities, but none has provided a universally accepted answer.

Another leading hypothesis is that the moons formed from debris around Mars after a major impact. Under this model, a large object struck early Mars and sent rock into orbit. The debris could have formed a disk that later produced one or more moons. Some simulations suggest that Phobos may be the surviving remnant of a larger family of moons that formed and evolved over time.

The chemical and mineralogical composition of Phobos is central to sorting out these scenarios. If its material closely resembles primitive carbon-rich asteroids, that could support an asteroid-related origin. If it instead contains signatures expected from Martian crust mixed with impact-generated debris, an impact-origin model could become more likely.

A returned sample would be especially valuable because laboratory instruments can make far more precise measurements than spacecraft sensors operating at a distance.

## Why Earth Laboratories Matter

Remote sensing is essential for planetary exploration, but returned material allows a different level of analysis.

Scientists can examine individual grains under microscopes, determine mineral structures, measure isotopic ratios, and search for chemical changes caused by water or heating. Isotopes are versions of elements with different numbers of neutrons, and their relative abundances can serve as fingerprints of a material’s source and history.

For MMX samples, researchers may investigate:

– The minerals and elemental composition of Phobos material
– Evidence for interactions with water or ice in the past
– The age and impact history of surface grains
– Whether any particles originated on Mars
– How space weathering altered the moon’s exposed surface

Such work may take years after samples arrive on Earth. That long scientific timeline is normal for sample-return missions. The Apollo lunar samples, for example, are still being studied more than half a century after their collection.

## A Broader International Exploration Effort

MMX also illustrates the increasingly international nature of solar-system exploration. JAXA leads the mission, while partners including NASA and European organizations contribute instruments, hardware, and scientific expertise.

International collaboration spreads technical risk, combines specialized capabilities, and gives researchers around the world access to mission data and eventual sample analyses. It also builds on a growing record of asteroid, lunar, and Mars exploration efforts that share instruments, communications systems, and research teams across national agencies.

The mission’s planned science return extends beyond the two Martian moons. Understanding Phobos and Deimos could reveal more about the early Mars system, the effects of major impacts, and the movement of material between planetary bodies.
