Excerpt: Antarctic sea ice expanded through the Southern Hemisphere winter and reached its 2026 maximum extent at the third-lowest level in the satellite record. The result adds to evidence that Antarctica’s sea-ice system has entered a period of unusual variability and persistent low ice coverage.

## Antarctic Sea Ice Reaches a Historically Low Winter Maximum

Antarctic sea ice reached its annual maximum extent in 2026 at the third-lowest level observed since continuous satellite monitoring began in 1979, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory.

Sea ice around Antarctica grows during the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn and winter, generally reaching its broadest seasonal coverage in September. It then retreats through spring and summer as sunlight returns and ocean and air temperatures rise.

A winter maximum is important because it shows how much ice formed during the coldest part of the year. In 2026, that seasonal recovery remained well below the long-term levels seen across most of the satellite era.

The finding does not mean Antarctica is losing all of its sea ice in a simple, identical pattern every year. Antarctic sea ice has always varied substantially from season to season and from one region of the continent to another. But the 2026 maximum adds to a notable run of low-ice years that has challenged earlier assumptions about the Antarctic climate system.

## What “Sea Ice Extent” Means

Scientists commonly describe Antarctic sea ice using a measurement called **sea ice extent**. It is not the same as the total volume or thickness of the ice.

Extent measures the area of ocean where satellite observations detect at least a specified level of ice coverage, usually 15 percent. It is useful because satellites can map broad, remote stretches of the Southern Ocean every day, including during the polar night.

However, extent has limitations.

A region can count toward sea ice extent even if it contains a mixture of open water and drifting ice. The measure also does not directly reveal whether the ice is thin or thick, whether it survived from the previous summer, or how much snow is sitting on top of it.

For a fuller picture, researchers examine sea ice concentration, thickness, age, movement, timing of freeze-up and melt, and the distribution of ice around different Antarctic sectors.

Still, annual maximum extent is one of the clearest long-term indicators available. It provides a standardized way to compare each winter’s ice growth with previous years.

## Why Antarctica’s Sea Ice Matters

Antarctic sea ice floats on the ocean, so its melting does not directly raise global sea level in the way that melting land ice does. Yet it plays an important role in Earth’s climate system.

The bright surface of sea ice reflects a substantial share of incoming sunlight back into space. When sea ice is reduced, darker seawater is exposed. Dark ocean surfaces absorb more solar energy, which can contribute to further local warming and delay the return of ice later in the year.

Sea ice also acts as a physical boundary between the atmosphere and ocean. It affects the exchange of heat, moisture, and gases, including carbon dioxide. Changes in ice cover can alter how the Southern Ocean stores heat and absorbs carbon from the atmosphere.

The ice is also central to Antarctic ecosystems. Algae can grow in and beneath sea ice, forming part of the food web that supports krill. Krill, in turn, are eaten by fish, seabirds, seals, and whales. A shorter or less stable sea-ice season can affect habitat and food availability, though impacts differ across species and locations.

In addition, sea ice can influence the coastal environment around Antarctica’s floating ice shelves. Ocean conditions, waves, and wind patterns near the continent are all affected by the presence or absence of seasonal ice.

## A Major Shift From Earlier Antarctic Patterns

For much of the satellite record, Antarctic sea ice behaved differently from Arctic sea ice.

The Arctic experienced a pronounced long-term decline in sea ice as global temperatures rose. Antarctica, by contrast, showed a modest overall increase in annual sea ice extent for several decades, despite considerable year-to-year variability.

That difference never meant Antarctica was insulated from climate change. The Southern Ocean is influenced by a complex mix of winds, currents, ocean temperatures, snowfall, and the shape of the Antarctic coastline. These factors can push ice outward, compact it, or affect how quickly it forms and melts.

The pattern changed sharply in the mid-2010s. Antarctic sea ice fell to unusually low levels, including record or near-record seasonal minima and maxima in several recent years. The 2026 winter maximum, ranked third lowest in the satellite record, continues that more recent pattern of reduced coverage.

Scientists are still investigating the relative importance of different drivers. Ocean warming, shifts in atmospheric circulation, changing winds, natural climate variability, and feedbacks involving the ocean and ice all likely matter. The exact contribution of each factor can vary by year and region.

## What Is Known — and What Is Not Yet Clear

NASA’s report establishes a key observational result: the Antarctic sea-ice cover reached its 2026 seasonal maximum at the third-lowest extent measured by satellites.

That is a robust statement about the scale of the winter ice cover compared with other years in the modern record.

What is less certain is whether any single low-ice year can be assigned to one specific cause. Climate systems do not operate in isolation. For example, a particular season may be influenced by sea-surface temperatures, the strength and position of circumpolar winds, regional storms, and large-scale patterns such as El Niño or La Niña.

Researchers also need many years of data to distinguish a temporary cluster of unusual seasons from a durable shift in the long-term Antarctic sea-ice regime. The recent low values are scientifically significant, but they do not by themselves answer every question about Antarctica’s future.

Continued monitoring is especially important because the Antarctic record is relatively short in climate terms. Satellite observations extend back to 1979, while major climate trends can unfold over many decades.

## Maximum Extent Is Only One Part of the Annual Cycle

A low winter maximum can matter for what follows.

If less ice forms in winter, there may be less ice available to persist into spring and summer. Earlier retreat can expose ocean water to sunlight sooner, increasing heat absorption. That stored heat can then make later ice formation more difficult.

This is a potential feedback, though its strength varies widely around Antarctica. Sea ice is mobile and wind-driven, unlike a fixed sheet of land ice. Strong winds can spread the ice over a wider area or compress it into a smaller one without necessarily changing the total amount of frozen water in the same way.

For that reason, scientists pay close attention to both the maximum and minimum extent, as well as the duration of the ice season. A complete assessment asks several questions: Did ice form late? Did it grow slowly? Was it unusually thin? Did it retreat early? And were the changes concentrated in regions such as the Weddell Sea, Ross Sea, Amundsen Sea, or the Antarctic Peninsula?

## How Satellites Track Ice in the Polar Night

Monitoring Antarctic sea ice would be far more difficult without satellites.

Visible-light instruments cannot observe the surface during the long Antarctic winter night. Instead, agencies rely heavily on passive microwave sensors, which detect natural microwave energy emitted by Earth’s surface and atmosphere. These measurements can distinguish sea ice from open water through clouds and darkness.

Scientists compile these observations into daily maps and compare them with a long-term reference period. NASA, the National Snow and Ice Data Center, and partner institutions use these records to track the timing and scale of sea-ice expansion and retreat.

Satellite data are also supplemented by ocean buoys, ship-based measurements, aircraft campaigns, and climate models. Each method provides a different piece of the puzzle.

## Why the 2026 Maximum Deserves Attention

The third-lowest Antarctic winter maximum on record is not simply a regional statistic. It is another signal from a part of the planet that strongly influences global ocean circulation, climate feedbacks, and marine ecosystems.

Antarctica remains one of the most difficult places on Earth to observe and model. Its sea ice is shaped by processes occurring in the atmosphere, at the ocean surface, beneath the ice, and along the continent’s vast coastline.

The key takeaway is not that every future Antarctic winter will necessarily set a new record low. Natural variability will remain important. Rather, 2026 adds to evidence that the continent’s seasonal sea-ice system has been behaving in ways that differ markedly from much of the earlier satellite record.

The next several years of observations will help show whether low winter maxima are becoming a more persistent feature of the Antarctic climate.
