Excerpt: Hurricane Simon’s offshore track did not prevent damaging weather along parts of Mexico’s coast. NASA imagery also captured unusual ripple patterns high in the atmosphere, offering a reminder that powerful tropical cyclones can influence the ocean, lower atmosphere, and upper atmosphere at the same time.

# Hurricane Simon Lurks Off the Mexican Coast

Hurricane Simon remained over the eastern Pacific Ocean off Mexico’s coast, but an offshore position did not mean the storm was harmless. According to NASA’s Earth Observatory, Simon lashed coastal areas with strong winds and flooding while also producing remarkable rippling patterns in the upper atmosphere.

That combination makes the storm scientifically interesting. Tropical cyclones are usually discussed in terms of wind speed, rainfall, storm surge, and their path near land. But a large, powerful storm can also disturb the atmosphere far above the cloud tops. Those disturbances can appear as wave-like bands or ripples in satellite observations, revealing the links between weather near Earth’s surface and conditions much higher overhead.

The source description does not specify the exact coastal locations affected, Simon’s intensity at the time of the image, or the precise atmospheric altitude of the ripples. Those details should therefore not be assumed. What is clear is that Simon was a significant offshore system with coastal consequences and a visible atmospheric signature.

## Offshore Does Not Mean Risk-Free

A hurricane does not need to make landfall to create dangerous conditions on shore. Simon’s circulation could push moist tropical air toward Mexico, producing periods of heavy rain well away from the storm’s center. Strong winds, high surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding can also extend outward from a cyclone over large distances.

This is especially important along Pacific-facing coastlines, where mountainous terrain can intensify rainfall effects. When moist air is driven inland and rises over hills or mountains, it cools and condenses. The result can be heavier precipitation on coastal slopes and inland high ground than might be expected from a storm’s offshore track alone.

Flooding can develop quickly when rain falls on steep terrain, in urban areas with limited drainage, or across regions where soils are already saturated. In such situations, hazards can include flash floods, mudslides, road washouts, and swollen rivers.

Coastal residents and visitors also face risks from the ocean. Even when skies are relatively calm at a beach, hurricane-generated swells can produce dangerous surf and strong currents. These waves can travel long distances from the storm, sometimes reaching coastlines before the cyclone itself is nearby.

## What the Ripples Above Hurricane Simon May Represent

The most unusual element in NASA’s description is the reference to “rippling patterns in the upper atmosphere.” Such patterns are often associated with atmospheric gravity waves.

Despite their name, atmospheric gravity waves are not the same as gravitational waves, which are ripples in spacetime detected by observatories such as LIGO. Atmospheric gravity waves are motions in air caused by gravity’s attempt to restore displaced air parcels to equilibrium.

A familiar analogy is a stone dropped into a pond. The stone disrupts the water surface, sending waves outward. In the atmosphere, strong disturbances can similarly generate waves that travel vertically and horizontally through layers of air.

Thunderstorms, mountain ranges, jet-stream activity, volcanic eruptions, and powerful tropical cyclones can all create conditions favorable for these waves. In a hurricane, vigorous convection—the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air in towering thunderstorm clouds—can act as a source of energy for atmospheric waves.

As these waves move upward into thinner air, their patterns can become more visible in satellite data. Depending on the instrument and observing conditions, they may appear as repeating arcs, bands, or ripples in clouds, water vapor, airglow, or temperature measurements.

## A Hurricane Is a Deep Atmospheric System

A mature tropical cyclone is not simply a spinning cloud mass on the ocean surface. It is a heat engine that transfers energy from warm seawater into the atmosphere.

Warm ocean water evaporates, adding moisture to the air. When that water vapor condenses into clouds and rain, it releases latent heat. This heat helps drive rising air in the storm’s core and supports the cyclone’s circulation. The strongest storms can transport heat, moisture, and momentum through a deep section of the atmosphere.

At the lower levels, hurricanes affect the sea surface through powerful winds and waves. They can mix ocean water, cool the surface beneath the storm, and sometimes bring nutrients upward from deeper layers.

In the middle and upper troposphere, the storm’s thunderstorms can spread outward into broad cloud shields. Higher still, energy released by those storms can generate waves that propagate into the stratosphere and beyond.

The observed ripples associated with Simon are therefore a visible example of atmospheric coupling: processes in the storm’s lower layers can have effects far above its familiar spiral cloud bands.

## Why Satellite Observations Matter

Satellites are essential for studying hurricanes that remain far from land-based radar and weather stations. They can monitor cloud structure, sea-surface conditions, rainfall, water vapor, lightning, and atmospheric temperature over remote ocean regions.

For forecasters, satellite imagery helps identify whether a tropical cyclone is becoming better organized, developing an eye, expanding its cloud canopy, or interacting with dry air and wind shear. Microwave sensors can provide information about rainfall structures hidden beneath high cloud tops, while infrared imagery helps scientists estimate cloud-top temperatures and examine storms overnight.

For researchers, observations of upper-atmosphere ripples add another layer of information. They can help scientists investigate how tropical convection generates waves, how those waves transport energy through the atmosphere, and how they influence circulation at higher altitudes.

These questions matter because the atmosphere is connected from the surface upward. Improving models of atmospheric waves may contribute to better understanding of weather and climate processes, even if the immediate operational forecast focus remains rainfall, wind, and coastal impacts.

## The Limits of a Single Image

Dramatic satellite imagery can make a storm’s structure easier to understand, but it should not be treated as a complete hazard assessment. A single view may show cloud patterns or upper-atmosphere features, yet it cannot by itself determine where flooding was worst, how long hazardous surf lasted, or how communities were affected.

Those conclusions require a wider set of observations: rainfall gauges, river measurements, surface weather stations, ocean buoys, radar data, emergency reports, and post-storm assessments.

Likewise, the source summary identifies high winds and flooding but does not provide confirmed totals, damage estimates, or a full timeline. The most accurate interpretation is that Hurricane Simon caused hazardous coastal weather while remaining offshore, rather than assuming a particular landfall scenario or assigning impacts to a specific Mexican state without supporting information.

## A Reminder to Watch the Whole Storm

Hurricane Simon illustrates why tropical cyclones should be viewed as more than a point on a forecast track. The center may remain offshore, but the storm’s rain, wind, waves, and ocean swells can still affect distant communities. At the same time, its towering thunderstorms may send disturbances upward into atmospheric layers far above the hazards experienced at the surface.

For the public, the practical lesson is straightforward: pay attention to official forecasts, marine warnings, rainfall alerts, and local emergency guidance even when a hurricane is not expected to cross the coast directly.

For scientists, Simon offers a compelling view of a storm operating across scales—from turbulent seas and rain-soaked coastlines to subtle wave patterns in the upper atmosphere.
