Excerpt: Fires in the Amazon are not usually started by lightning alone. During El Niño, warmer and drier conditions can make forests, farms, and cleared land more vulnerable to flames, smoke, and long-term ecological damage.

# Fires Arrive in the Amazon Rainforest: What El Niño Has to Do With It

NASA’s Earth Observatory has described a familiar but troubling pattern in tropical fire activity: during El Niño conditions, widespread burning can begin in equatorial Asia and later become pronounced in parts of the central and eastern Amazon.

The source item, titled *“Fires Arrive in the Amazon Rainforest,”* points to this broader climate-linked sequence. Its summary does not provide details about one specific fire, the acreage burned, or a complete timeline for a particular Amazon fire season. What is clear, however, is that El Niño can increase drought risk across parts of the Amazon basin, creating conditions in which fires set by people can escape into surrounding vegetation and forest.

That distinction matters. Many Amazon fires are not naturally ignited wildfires in the same sense as fires in lightning-prone boreal forests or the western United States. Instead, they are often associated with land clearing, pasture maintenance, agricultural burning, and fires spreading from already deforested areas. Drought does not necessarily start those fires, but it can make them much harder to contain.

## Why El Niño Can Increase Amazon Fire Risk

El Niño is a recurring climate pattern involving unusually warm surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. These ocean changes can alter atmospheric circulation around the world, shifting rainfall patterns, temperatures, and storm activity.

Its effects are not identical everywhere, and no two El Niño events are exactly alike. In parts of the Amazon, though, El Niño has often been associated with reduced rainfall, higher temperatures, and prolonged dry periods. Those conditions can lower river levels, dry soils, stress trees, and leave forest litter more combustible.

A healthy, humid tropical rainforest is generally resistant to fire. Its dense canopy retains moisture, and its shaded forest floor is often too damp to burn easily. But when drought lasts for months, that natural resistance can weaken.

The risk becomes especially serious near roads, farms, cattle pastures, logging frontiers, and recently cleared land. These are the places where human ignitions are more likely and where flames can move from grasses and debris into forest edges.

## Most Amazon Fires Have a Human Connection

Satellite images of burning across the Amazon can create the impression that the entire rainforest is spontaneously catching fire. The reality is more complex.

Fire is widely used in some areas to clear vegetation, remove agricultural residue, manage pasture, or establish new land uses. Such burning may be legal in limited circumstances under local rules, but it can also be used illegally in connection with deforestation or expansion into protected areas.

When weather is dry, even a deliberately set fire can become uncontrolled. Wind can carry embers across firebreaks, and flames can enter degraded or drought-stressed forest. Selectively logged forests can be particularly vulnerable because openings in the canopy allow more sunlight and heat to dry branches, leaves, and ground vegetation.

This means fire counts detected by satellites need careful interpretation. A thermal “hotspot” may represent a small agricultural burn, a large grassland fire, an industrial heat source, or an active forest fire. Scientists combine hotspot data with land-cover maps, weather observations, field reports, and burned-area analysis to determine what is actually happening.

## A Dangerous Feedback Loop for Forests

The Amazon is adapted to heavy rainfall, not frequent fire. When forests burn repeatedly, the effects can compound.

Even low-intensity fires can kill seedlings, damage mature trees, and open the forest canopy. As more sunlight reaches the ground, vegetation and leaf litter can dry out faster. The area may then become more likely to burn again in a later dry season.

This is sometimes described as a fire-degradation feedback loop:

1. Drought increases the flammability of vegetation.
2. Fire enters forest edges or disturbed areas.
3. Tree mortality and canopy loss make the forest hotter and drier.
4. The degraded forest becomes more susceptible to future fires.

Over time, repeated fire can shift an ecosystem away from closed-canopy rainforest characteristics toward a more open, degraded landscape. That does not mean the entire Amazon is destined to become savanna, but it does mean that some regions can lose ecological resilience when deforestation, fragmentation, warming, and recurrent fire occur together.

## Smoke Has Consequences Far Beyond the Burn Area

The immediate environmental impact of fires is visible in satellite imagery, but smoke can affect people hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away.

Wildfire and agricultural-fire smoke contains fine particulate matter, commonly known as PM2.5. These tiny particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and are associated with respiratory and cardiovascular health risks. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and individuals with heart or lung conditions can be especially vulnerable during smoky periods.

Smoke also disrupts transport, reduces visibility, and places pressure on public-health systems. During major Amazon fire seasons, haze can reach large cities in Brazil and neighboring countries, even when those urban areas are far from the active burn zones.

At a global scale, fires release carbon dioxide and other gases that influence the climate. Forest fires can also reduce the Amazon’s ability to store carbon in living trees and soils. The full carbon impact depends on what burns, how intensely it burns, and whether the land is allowed to regenerate or is converted permanently for another use.

## Why Satellite Monitoring Is Essential

The Amazon covers an enormous area across multiple countries, making on-the-ground monitoring alone impossible. Earth-observing satellites are therefore central to tracking fires, smoke, rainfall, vegetation stress, and land-cover change.

NASA instruments can detect thermal anomalies associated with active fires, while other satellite systems map smoke plumes, burned land, clouds, water levels, and changes in forest cover. Agencies and research institutions also use these observations to issue air-quality guidance and inform emergency response.

Still, satellite data have limits. Clouds can obscure the ground, a detected heat signature does not automatically reveal the cause of a fire, and the presence of fire does not by itself prove deforestation. Careful analysis is needed to connect a detected fire with land management, forest loss, or protected-area impacts.

The most useful picture emerges when satellite records are combined with local reporting, law-enforcement data, Indigenous and community observations, and long-term climate measurements.

## The Importance of the El Niño Connection

The connection between El Niño and Amazon fire risk is important because it shows how local land-use decisions can interact with a large-scale climate event.

People may ignite many fires, but exceptional drought can turn a seasonal burning problem into a regional environmental and public-health crisis. Conversely, reducing deforestation, maintaining forest buffers, enforcing restrictions during severe drought, and improving agricultural alternatives to open burning can lower the chance that fire spreads into standing forest.

El Niño is not the only factor. The Atlantic Ocean, regional weather patterns, land clearing, forest fragmentation, and human fire use all influence the outcome of a given season. Scientists therefore avoid attributing every Amazon fire directly to El Niño.

But the overall lesson is well established: drier, hotter conditions raise the risk. As the climate warms, protecting intact forests and limiting ignition sources become increasingly important strategies for reducing fire damage.

## What Is Known—and What Is Not—from the NASA Item

NASA’s source summary identifies a broad pattern of tropical fire activity during El Niño, including fire development in central and eastern Amazonia after burning begins in equatorial Asia.

However, the available source information does not specify a single fire’s precise location, total burned area, number of affected communities, or the final scale of environmental damage. Those details require event-specific data from local authorities, satellite burned-area products, and scientific assessments.

The significance of the item is therefore not simply that fires can be seen in the Amazon. It is that climate variability, drought, land-use pressure, and fire management can converge in one of Earth’s most important forest regions.

## A Forest Fire Problem With Global Relevance

The Amazon matters to far more than the countries within its basin. It supports extraordinary biodiversity, influences regional rainfall, stores vast quantities of carbon, and sustains millions of people, including Indigenous peoples whose territories often overlap with some of the best-preserved forests.

Fire seasons are a reminder that rainforest protection is not only about stopping a visible flame. It also involves reducing deforestation, protecting land rights, monitoring drought, supporting safer agricultural practices, and responding rapidly when fires threaten forests and communities.

When El Niño makes the region drier, those measures become even more consequential.
