## NASA’s Solar Array Upgrades Are Powering the Next Phase of ISS Science

The International Space Station depends on sunlight. Orbiting roughly 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth, the station passes repeatedly between daylight and darkness, using large solar arrays to generate electricity whenever it is in the Sun.

That electricity is essential. It supports life-support equipment, communications, computers, cooling systems, laboratory facilities, robotic systems, and the many scientific investigations conducted aboard the orbiting laboratory.

NASA’s new article, published October 15, 2026, describes how roll-out solar arrays have strengthened the station’s electrical supply over the past five years. These upgrades are important because the ISS is operating far beyond the era in which its original solar panels were designed. The new arrays do not replace the original solar wings outright. Instead, they supplement them, restoring and expanding the power available for the station’s demanding operations.

## Why the Space Station Needs More Solar Power

The ISS has relied on solar energy since its earliest assembly missions. Its original solar-array wings were built to generate electricity by converting sunlight into direct current power. That energy is routed through the station’s electrical system and stored in batteries for use while the station travels through Earth’s shadow.

But solar panels lose efficiency over time.

The ISS operates in a harsh environment that includes large temperature swings, radiation exposure, and frequent transitions from sunlight to darkness. Micrometeoroid and orbital-debris impacts can also affect hardware over long periods. Although the station’s original arrays remain functional, their output naturally declines as they age.

This matters because the ISS has continued to evolve. New research equipment, commercial payloads, crew activities, communications hardware, and technology demonstrations can all add to its electrical demand. Maintaining a healthy power margin gives NASA and its international partners more flexibility to conduct science and operate the station safely.

The roll-out solar array program addresses that challenge without requiring a complete rebuild of the station’s existing power infrastructure.

## What Are ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays?

The upgraded panels are known as ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays, or iROSAs. Unlike the station’s original solar wings, which unfold in large blanket-like structures, iROSAs use a compact roll-out design.

The arrays are delivered to the station in a tightly wound configuration. Once installed, they unroll into long, rigid solar panels. This approach allows relatively large power-generating surfaces to be transported in a smaller volume than would be required for some conventional rigid-panel designs.

Each iROSA is mounted in front of part of an existing solar-array channel. The new panels are positioned to generate power while preserving much of the older array structure behind them. NASA has described the upgrades as a way to increase the station’s available electrical power while taking advantage of hardware already in orbit.

The design was derived from Roll-Out Solar Array technology developed by Redwire, with NASA using the systems to modernize the ISS power architecture.

## A Multi-Year Upgrade Carried Out Through Spacewalks

Installing the arrays was not a simple matter of attaching a panel and switching it on. The work required detailed planning, cargo launches, robotic operations, and astronaut spacewalks.

The first pair of iROSAs arrived at the ISS in 2021 and were installed during a series of spacewalks. Additional pairs followed in later missions. Astronauts prepared mounting brackets, routed electrical connections, released restraints, and monitored deployment of the arrays outside the station.

Spacewalk installation is inherently complex. Astronauts must work in bulky spacesuits while using specialized tools and tethers. They also have to account for the station’s orientation, thermal conditions, electrical safety procedures, and the possibility of small deployment or connection issues.

The overall program involved six roll-out arrays installed across the station’s power channels. Together, the arrays help compensate for the gradual degradation of the original solar wings and improve the amount of electricity available for ISS operations.

NASA has previously said the upgrades could raise the station’s available power to roughly 215 kilowatts, compared with an expected output closer to 160 kilowatts from the aging original arrays alone. Actual output varies with the station’s orientation, solar angle, system configuration, and other operational factors.

## Supporting Research That Benefits Earth and Exploration

More electrical capacity is not just an engineering improvement. It can directly affect what the ISS can do.

The station hosts research in biology, medicine, materials science, combustion, fluid physics, Earth observation, and other fields. Microgravity allows researchers to study processes that are difficult or impossible to isolate on Earth.

For example, experiments aboard the ISS have examined how materials form in microgravity, how plants grow beyond Earth, and how the human body changes during long-duration spaceflight. Results can inform medicine, manufacturing, agriculture, and the planning of future missions.

Reliable power also supports the station’s environmental control and life-support systems. These systems help manage air, water, temperature, and other conditions necessary for astronauts to live and work in orbit.

The expanded solar capacity provides additional operational margin. In practical terms, that can help station managers schedule experiments, operate equipment, and accommodate future payloads without placing undue strain on the power system.

## A Test Bed for Future Spacecraft Power Systems

The ISS solar-array upgrades also have a broader purpose: they demonstrate technology relevant to future missions.

As NASA prepares for Artemis lunar exploration and considers eventual human missions to Mars, spacecraft will need efficient and resilient power systems. Solar energy will remain a major option for spacecraft operating near Earth, at the Moon, and in many regions of the solar system.

Roll-out arrays can be especially useful where launch volume and mass are limited. A compact array that expands after launch could allow future spacecraft, lunar-orbiting platforms, or deep-space vehicles to carry substantial power-generation capability without requiring a large fairing or complex deployment system.

The conditions at the ISS also provide a valuable long-term test. Engineers can observe how the arrays perform in low Earth orbit over time, including their behavior during thermal cycles, exposure to radiation, and normal station operations.

## What NASA’s 2026 Update Confirms — and What It Does Not

NASA’s source item makes clear that solar power remains central to ISS operations and that the roll-out array initiative has augmented the station’s electrical supply over a five-year period.

The available summary does not provide a new, array-by-array performance report, a specific new power-output measurement, or details about additional planned iROSA installations beyond the completed upgrade effort. It also does not suggest that the new arrays eliminate the need for maintenance, power management, or the station’s battery systems.

That distinction is important. Solar arrays are part of a larger electrical network. The ISS must still regulate power generation, store energy for orbital night, distribute electricity among modules and payloads, and manage changing operational demands.

Still, the upgrade is a practical example of how an aging spacecraft can be modernized in orbit. Rather than retiring usable infrastructure immediately, NASA and its partners have extended its value with targeted improvements.

## A Longer-Lasting Laboratory in Orbit

The International Space Station remains one of the most complex engineering projects ever operated continuously in space. Its solar-power upgrades show that keeping such a facility productive requires more than routine maintenance. It requires new technologies that can work alongside hardware designed decades earlier.

By improving the station’s power supply, the iROSA program helps protect the ISS’s role as a research laboratory, technology test bed, and training ground for deep-space exploration.

For the crews living aboard the station, solar power is a daily necessity. For researchers on Earth, it enables experiments with potential real-world value. And for future missions beyond low Earth orbit, the arrays provide another lesson in designing spacecraft that can make the most of the Sun.
