Excerpt: Allison Mjoen’s work in NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program highlights the often-unseen engineering needed to launch Artemis missions. From cryogenic propellant systems to launch-day coordination, ground teams are essential to the effort to return astronauts to the Moon.

## Allison Mjoen’s Role in the Artemis Program

NASA’s Artemis program is frequently described through its most visible elements: the Space Launch System rocket, the Orion spacecraft, astronauts, and the goal of sending people back to the Moon. But every launch also depends on a vast network of people, facilities, software, safety processes, and hardware on the ground.

Allison Mjoen is one of the people helping coordinate that less-visible side of lunar exploration.

According to NASA’s “I Am Artemis” profile, Mjoen serves as operations manager for NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program. Her work involves the systems and operations required to process, prepare, test, fuel, and launch major Artemis hardware from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The profile describes Mjoen and her family watching an SLS rocket launch as supercooled propellant entered the core stage and the vehicle came to life. That moment represents more than a powerful launch spectacle. It reflects years of work by engineers, technicians, operators, and managers responsible for making the launch infrastructure function safely.

The source item is a short personnel profile rather than a detailed mission report. It does not specify every project, launch campaign, or technical decision associated with Mjoen’s work. What is clear is that her role sits within the operational backbone of Artemis: the ground systems that must work correctly before a rocket can leave Earth.

## What Are Exploration Ground Systems?

NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems, or EGS, program is responsible for preparing and launching spacecraft that support deep-space human exploration. Its work spans infrastructure, testing, integration, launch operations, and recovery planning.

For Artemis missions, that includes support for the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft at Kennedy Space Center.

The program’s responsibilities include major facilities such as the Vehicle Assembly Building, where elements of the SLS rocket are stacked; Launch Complex 39B, the launch pad used for Artemis missions; and the mobile launcher that transports and supports the rocket before liftoff.

Ground systems also encompass less obvious but equally important capabilities:

– Cryogenic propellant storage and transfer systems
– Environmental control and power systems
– Communications networks and launch-control software
– Vehicle checkout equipment
– Emergency response and safety procedures
– Transportation hardware for moving large rocket components
– Systems that support Orion processing and recovery

A lunar mission begins long before astronauts board a spacecraft. It starts with the ability to safely receive rocket stages, assemble them, test interfaces, load propellants, monitor vehicle health, and respond to unexpected technical issues.

That is why operations management is central to NASA’s exploration plans. A rocket may be designed for space, but it must first function reliably within a complicated terrestrial launch environment.

## Why Supercooled Propellant Operations Matter

The source summary mentions supercooled propellant flowing into the SLS core stage. This refers to cryogenic fuels and oxidizers—substances kept at extremely low temperatures so they remain liquid.

SLS uses liquid hydrogen as fuel and liquid oxygen as an oxidizer in its core stage. The rocket’s four RS-25 engines burn those propellants during ascent. Liquid hydrogen must be maintained at roughly minus 423 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 253 degrees Celsius), while liquid oxygen is also kept far below freezing.

Handling such materials is a major engineering challenge.

Cryogenic loading requires specialized tanks, pipelines, valves, sensors, insulation, and control systems. Temperatures, pressures, flow rates, and venting processes must be carefully managed. Even small changes in conditions can affect launch operations, and the system must be designed with strict safety controls.

The Artemis I mission in 2022 illustrated both the importance and difficulty of this work. During early launch attempts, teams encountered hydrogen-related issues during fueling operations. NASA ultimately used the additional time to improve procedures and hardware, leading to the successful uncrewed flight test on November 16, 2022.

That experience offered a practical reminder: launch operations are not simply a final checklist. They are a technical discipline in their own right. The hardware at the pad, the teams in control rooms, and the processes that guide decisions all contribute to mission readiness.

## The Human Side of Launch Operations

NASA’s Artemis workforce includes scientists, astronauts, software developers, machinists, engineers, project managers, safety specialists, and operations personnel. The “I Am Artemis” series is designed to show that the program depends on many careers beyond the people who fly into space.

Mjoen’s profile fits that broader message. An operations manager helps connect teams and systems that may otherwise be treated as separate pieces of a mission. In practice, launch readiness requires collaboration between vehicle engineers, pad teams, mission planners, contractors, range safety personnel, and agency leadership.

These roles require technical knowledge, but also communication and decision-making under pressure.

A launch campaign can involve shifting schedules, weather concerns, hardware inspections, test results, software updates, and supply-chain constraints. Managers and operators need to understand how changes in one area affect the entire system. The goal is not simply to launch quickly; it is to launch when the vehicle, facilities, people, and conditions meet established safety and mission criteria.

For workers who contribute over many years, seeing a vehicle finally lift off can be especially meaningful. A launch represents the visible outcome of thousands of individual tasks, many of which happen out of public view.

## Artemis and the Return to the Moon

Artemis is NASA’s long-term campaign to establish a sustained human presence at and around the Moon. The program is intended to build experience and capabilities that could later support human missions to Mars.

Artemis I was the first integrated flight of SLS and Orion. The uncrewed mission sent Orion around the Moon and back to Earth, testing the spacecraft and launch system in the deep-space environment.

Future Artemis missions are planned to expand on that foundation. NASA has described Artemis II as a crewed lunar flyby mission, while later missions are intended to support lunar landing objectives. However, exact schedules can change as NASA completes hardware testing, safety reviews, and mission preparations.

That uncertainty is normal for complex human spaceflight programs. Major missions involve interconnected systems, and NASA may revise dates to address technical findings or protect crew safety.

Ground systems will remain a crucial part of every step. New rockets and spacecraft do not launch from abstract diagrams. They require facilities that can process vehicles, load propellants, support crews, and manage countdown operations.

## Why These Behind-the-Scenes Roles Are Significant

The public tends to remember a launch by its most dramatic images: ignition, smoke, flame, and ascent. Yet the reliability of that moment rests on preparation that may stretch over years.

The work of professionals such as Allison Mjoen demonstrates why space exploration is both a scientific and industrial undertaking. Sending astronauts toward the Moon demands more than advanced spacecraft. It requires reliable launch sites, highly trained teams, rigorous procedures, and an institutional culture that treats safety as a core mission requirement.

For students and early-career professionals, this is also an important lesson about the space sector. Not every path into exploration involves becoming an astronaut or designing a rocket engine. Careers in operations, systems engineering, logistics, information technology, manufacturing, environmental safety, and program management can have a direct effect on mission success.

As Artemis develops, the people operating Earth-based systems will continue to be as important as the spacecraft traveling beyond Earth.

## What We Know—and What the NASA Profile Does Not Detail

NASA’s profile establishes that Allison Mjoen is an operations manager in the Exploration Ground Systems Program and connects her work to the launch operations supporting Artemis.

The short source summary does not provide a full technical account of her specific responsibilities, her complete career history, or which individual launch milestones she directly managed. It also does not establish a new Artemis launch date or announce a mission outcome.

Still, the profile offers a useful view of the workforce required for lunar exploration. Artemis is not only a story about spacecraft heading toward the Moon. It is also a story about the specialists on Earth who make those missions possible.
