Meta Title: Anticrepuscular Rainbow Fan: How Sunlight Creates a Rare Sky Display
Meta Description: Learn how anticrepuscular rays, rainbows, and perspective can combine to create a fan-shaped atmospheric display opposite the Sun.
URL Slug: anticrepuscular-rainbow-fan-explained
Excerpt: NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day highlighted an “anticrepuscular rainbow fan” on October 20, 2026. While the available source summary provides few image-specific details, the title points to a striking combination of familiar atmospheric optics: rainbow-colored light, shadowed cloud bands, and perspective-driven rays that appear to meet opposite the Sun.

# An Anticrepuscular Rainbow Fan: The Atmospheric Optics Behind the View

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day listing for October 20, 2026 is titled **“An Anticrepuscular Rainbow Fan.”** The supplied page summary confirms the APOD entry and date, but it does not include the full caption, the location of the photograph, observing conditions, or details of the image itself.

That limited information matters. Without the original explanatory caption, it would be speculative to identify every visible feature in the photograph or to say exactly how the scene was formed. Still, the title provides a useful scientific starting point: it appears to describe an atmospheric display involving **anticrepuscular rays** and **rainbow-like colors** arranged in a spreading, fan-shaped pattern.

Such views are reminders that the sky is not simply a blue backdrop. It is an active optical system shaped by sunlight, water droplets, ice crystals, aerosols, clouds, and the geometry of the observer’s position.

## What Are Anticrepuscular Rays?

Anticrepuscular rays are broad bands of light and shadow seen in the part of the sky **opposite the Sun**. They are related to ordinary crepuscular rays, the familiar beams that seem to radiate outward from the Sun when it is low on the horizon and partly blocked by clouds or terrain.

The difference is mostly one of viewing direction.

Crepuscular rays are seen near the Sun. Anticrepuscular rays are seen on the opposite side of the sky, near the **antisolar point**—the point directly opposite the Sun from an observer’s perspective.

Both phenomena arise when clouds or other obstacles cast shadows through a hazy atmosphere. Fine particles, dust, smoke, mist, or tiny water droplets scatter sunlight toward an observer. Where sunlight is blocked, darker lanes appear between brighter ones.

The rays are often nearly parallel in physical space. They only appear to converge because of perspective, much as parallel railway tracks seem to meet at a distant vanishing point. When viewed opposite the Sun, those apparently converging bands are called anticrepuscular rays.

## Why the Rays Can Look Like a Fan

The word “fan” is an apt description for the visual geometry of atmospheric rays. A low Sun can illuminate gaps between clouds, producing alternating bright and dark streaks that seem to open across a large portion of the sky.

Near the antisolar point, the streaks may appear to come together. Farther away, they can seem to spread outward in a radial pattern. The result can resemble the ribs of an open fan.

This shape is not necessarily a physical structure in the clouds. It is largely an effect of perspective combined with changing cloud thickness and uneven scattering in the atmosphere.

The display can be especially dramatic around sunrise or sunset, when sunlight travels through a longer path in the atmosphere. Shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly, while the direct light reaching distant clouds can become warmer—yellow, orange, or red.

## Where Does the Rainbow Part Come From?

A true primary rainbow forms when sunlight enters spherical water droplets, refracts, reflects once inside the droplet, and refracts again as it exits. This sequence separates white sunlight into colors.

For an observer, the primary rainbow appears at an angle of roughly **42 degrees from the antisolar point**. That geometry is why a rainbow always appears opposite the Sun and why it changes position as the observer moves.

The inner edge of a primary rainbow is violet and the outer edge is red. A secondary rainbow, if visible, lies outside the primary bow and has the color order reversed. It forms through two internal reflections inside water droplets and is fainter because more light is lost along the way.

The phrase “rainbow fan” may therefore refer to a scene in which colored bow-like arcs or rainbow fragments are visually combined with the radial pattern of anticrepuscular rays. It could also describe a broader atmospheric optical display whose colors resemble a rainbow but may not be a textbook rain bow.

Without the complete APOD caption or image, that distinction cannot be confirmed from the supplied summary alone.

## The Antisolar Point Connects Many Sky Phenomena

The antisolar point is central to understanding this type of display. It is not a fixed star or an object in space. Instead, it is a direction in the sky defined by the observer and the Sun.

If the Sun is setting in the west, the antisolar point is toward the eastern horizon. A rainbow appears around that point, while anticrepuscular rays may seem to converge toward it.

Several other optical effects are also related to this geometry:

– **Glories** can appear around the shadow of an aircraft on clouds or around a person’s shadow in fog.
– **Heiligenschein** is a brightening around the head of a person’s shadow on dewy grass.
– **Brocken spectres** occur when a person’s shadow is projected onto cloud or mist, sometimes surrounded by a glory.
– **The opposition effect** can brighten rough surfaces, including the Moon near full phase, when illumination comes from almost directly behind the observer.

These effects have different physical causes, but they share an important lesson: atmospheric optics depends strongly on the alignment of the Sun, the observer, and the scattering material.

## Why These Displays Are Often Brief

A rainbow and a system of visible rays require a precise combination of conditions. There must be sunlight in one direction and water droplets, haze, or cloud in the appropriate part of the sky. The Sun also needs to be low enough for a rainbow to appear above the horizon.

For a primary rainbow, the Sun must be below about 42 degrees in altitude. In practice, the most impressive bows often occur when the Sun is much lower, since more of the circle rises above the landscape.

Anticrepuscular rays depend on cloud gaps and atmospheric particles that make the light paths visible. A small shift in cloud cover, wind direction, rainfall, or the observer’s location can alter the effect quickly.

That is why photographs of unusual atmospheric displays are valuable. They document transient combinations of weather, illumination, and viewpoint that may last only minutes.

## How to Look for Anticrepuscular Effects Safely

The best opportunities come near sunrise or sunset, especially when showers or broken clouds are present in the sky opposite the Sun. After a passing rainstorm, look away from the low Sun toward the darker horizon.

If a rainbow is visible, scan the surrounding sky for bright and dark bands that appear to point toward the center of the bow. Wide-angle views can make the relationship between the rainbow, the horizon, and the converging rays easier to recognize.

Never stare directly at the Sun or point binoculars, telescopes, or camera lenses at it without proper solar-filtering procedures. Atmospheric displays are best appreciated by looking away from the Sun, toward the antisolar sky.

## Why the APOD Subject Is Significant

An “anticrepuscular rainbow fan” brings together several accessible ideas in atmospheric science: the color separation of a rainbow, the scattering of sunlight by particles, the role of cloud shadows, and the powerful influence of perspective.

It also illustrates that striking scientific imagery does not always require a spacecraft or large observatory. The same principles of light and geometry can turn an ordinary sunset, a passing shower, and a few cloud gaps into a complex natural display.

NASA’s APOD archive has long helped connect visual wonder with scientific explanation. In this case, the available source metadata establishes the topic but leaves the photograph’s specific context unresolved. The underlying physics, however, is well understood: sunlight and atmosphere can create patterns that look almost architectural, even though they are produced by changing weather and the observer’s line of sight.
