Excerpt: ESA says the Euclid space telescope has discovered a previously unknown comet in images captured in September 2026. While details including the comet’s official designation and orbit have not yet been provided, the finding highlights how major cosmology missions can also contribute to Solar System science.

## Euclid reportedly finds its first new comet

The European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope has discovered a previously unknown comet, according to an ESA announcement dated 19 October 2026. The object was identified in images collected between 16 and 24 September 2026.

Euclid was designed primarily to investigate some of the largest questions in cosmology: how the Universe has expanded over time, how galaxies and galaxy clusters are distributed, and what dark matter and dark energy may be doing on cosmic scales. It was not launched as a comet-hunting spacecraft.

That makes the reported discovery notable. It suggests that Euclid’s exceptionally wide, detailed views of the sky can reveal moving Solar System objects while the observatory performs its main survey work.

The source information currently available is limited. ESA’s summary confirms that Euclid found a new comet in September 2026 imagery, but it does not provide an official comet designation, a precise orbit, an estimated size, or details about whether the object poses any relevance to Earth. Those facts would normally depend on further observations and orbit calculations.

## Why a cosmology telescope can spot a comet

Euclid observes the sky from a location near the Sun–Earth L2 Lagrange point, roughly 1.5 million kilometres beyond Earth in the direction away from the Sun. This orbit gives the spacecraft a stable thermal environment and a clear observing geometry for its deep extragalactic survey.

Its main instruments are built to map huge numbers of galaxies across a broad area of sky. Euclid’s visible-light instrument, VIS, produces high-resolution images, while its near-infrared instrument, NISP, records infrared images and spectra that help scientists estimate the distances and properties of distant galaxies.

Comets are much closer than Euclid’s intended targets, but they can still appear in survey data. Unlike background stars and galaxies, a comet changes its position against the distant sky from one observation to another. If it is active, sunlight warming its volatile ices can create a diffuse coma of gas and dust around its nucleus, and sometimes a tail extending away from the Sun.

A moving, fuzzy-looking object in a sequence of images can therefore stand out from the fixed cosmic background. Detecting it is only the first step. Astronomers then need repeated measurements, often from multiple observatories, to determine whether the object is a comet, calculate its path, and establish whether it has been seen before.

## What is known — and what is not yet known

The ESA item provides several core facts:

– Euclid identified a previously unknown comet.
– The images in which it was found were taken from 16 to 24 September 2026.
– This is described as Euclid’s first discovery of a new comet.

However, several important details have not been stated in the supplied source summary.

There is no reported provisional designation from the Minor Planet Center, the international clearinghouse for observations and orbits of comets, asteroids, and other small bodies. There is also no published information in the summary on the comet’s closest approach to the Sun, its distance from Earth, its orbital period, or whether its orbit is short-period, long-period, or potentially interstellar.

The summary also does not say how bright the comet is, whether it has a visible tail, or whether scientists have identified a nucleus size. These measurements can be difficult even after discovery. A comet’s apparent brightness can change rapidly as it approaches or moves away from the Sun, while its surrounding coma can obscure the solid nucleus itself.

Until follow-up observations and a formal orbit solution are released, it would be premature to make claims about where the comet came from or whether it will become visible to amateur observers.

## A useful bonus for Euclid’s main mission

Euclid’s central science objective remains cosmology. The mission is conducting a large survey of the sky to create a three-dimensional map of the Universe, using the shapes and distances of billions of galaxies.

One of Euclid’s goals is to measure weak gravitational lensing: subtle distortions in the apparent shapes of distant galaxies caused by foreground matter. Since dark matter does not emit or reflect light in the usual way, its presence can be inferred through gravitational effects such as lensing.

Euclid will also examine how galaxies are distributed over vast distances and across cosmic time. Those measurements can help researchers test models of cosmic expansion and investigate the influence attributed to dark energy.

A comet discovery does not change those goals. Instead, it demonstrates an additional value of wide-field astronomical surveys. Large datasets built for one question can produce unexpected discoveries in another field when astronomers inspect them carefully or use automated software to identify unusual objects.

This cross-disciplinary benefit is increasingly common in modern astronomy. Surveys aimed at distant galaxies, supernovae, or the structure of the Milky Way also collect repeated images containing asteroids, comets, variable stars, and transient events.

## The growing role of survey missions in Solar System science

The Solar System contains vast numbers of small bodies, many of which remain undiscovered. Comets are especially valuable because they preserve material from the early history of the Solar System. Their ices, dust, and organic compounds can provide clues about the cold outer regions where they formed.

Some comets originate in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune, while others are thought to come from the much more distant Oort Cloud. Their paths can be altered by gravitational interactions with planets, bringing them inward toward the Sun and occasionally making them observable from Earth or space.

Finding these objects requires a combination of broad sky coverage, sensitive imaging, and multiple observations over time. Dedicated ground-based surveys have already transformed this work, and major facilities such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory are expected to increase the pace of small-body discoveries further.

Space observatories add a different perspective. Above Earth’s atmosphere, their images avoid atmospheric blurring and some weather-related interruptions. A mission such as Euclid is not optimized for tracking fast-moving near-Earth objects, but its stable viewing position, image quality, and survey scale can still make it capable of detecting unexpected travellers through the Solar System.

## Why confirmation and follow-up matter

When a new moving object is identified, astronomers collect astrometric measurements: precise determinations of its position at specific times. Those positions allow specialists to fit an orbit.

At first, the orbit may be uncertain. A short observational arc can permit several possible paths, especially for a faint object. Additional observations over days, weeks, or longer can greatly improve the calculation.

For a comet, astronomers may also use follow-up imaging and spectroscopy to study activity in the coma. Spectroscopy can help identify gases released from the object, while images taken at different wavelengths can reveal dust and gas structures. These observations are important for understanding how a comet behaves as solar heating changes.

If ESA or collaborating observatories release a designation and orbital data for Euclid’s new comet, scientists will be able to place it in a broader population of known small bodies. Until then, the most defensible conclusion is that Euclid has made an intriguing first comet discovery, not that the object has been fully characterised.

## A reminder that sky surveys often deliver surprises

Euclid’s reported comet discovery is a small but meaningful illustration of how scientific missions can exceed their original remit. A telescope built to study the dark Universe also records the foreground Solar System, where objects can move noticeably between exposures.

For researchers, these chance discoveries can add scientific return without displacing the mission’s primary work. For the public, they offer a useful reminder that astronomy is not divided neatly between “nearby” and “distant” science. The same image may contain galaxies billions of light-years away and a comet moving through our own planetary neighbourhood.

As more survey data are processed, Euclid may reveal additional minor planets, comets, or other transient objects. Any future discoveries will require the same careful process: detection, confirmation, follow-up, and formal reporting.
