The event is part of NASA’s Inspiration Tour, which uses public appearances to connect communities with the agency’s work in aviation, space, science, and technology.

## NASA Brings Aeronautics to Tuscaloosa

NASA is scheduled to conduct a flyover at the University of Alabama’s football game against Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026.

According to a NASA announcement, three F-5 fighter jets are expected to participate in the pregame flyover. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is slated to pilot one of the aircraft.

The appearance is part of NASA’s Inspiration Tour, an outreach effort intended to introduce more people to the agency’s work and the people behind it. While NASA is widely known for Moon missions, Mars rovers, astronauts, and space telescopes, aviation research remains one of the agency’s longest-running responsibilities.

A stadium flyover is brief, but it can offer a visible reminder that NASA’s work extends well beyond rockets and orbit. The agency has been conducting research in aeronautics since its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, was established in 1915.

## What NASA Has Announced — and What It Has Not

NASA’s release says the flyover will take place during the Alabama vs. Texas A&M game and will involve three F-5 fighter jets. The agency says the event is meant to highlight NASA’s contributions to aeronautics and its commitment to engaging the public through the Inspiration Tour.

The announcement identifies Isaacman as one of the pilots. It does not, in the available summary, provide a detailed flight path, altitude, exact timing relative to kickoff, or the research role of each aircraft involved.

As with all aviation operations, flyover plans can be affected by weather, airspace restrictions, aircraft availability, and operational requirements. Fans should therefore treat the announced flyover as planned programming rather than a guarantee until the event occurs.

## Why NASA Operates Fighter Aircraft

NASA’s use of high-performance aircraft can surprise people who associate the agency solely with launch vehicles and spacecraft. Yet aircraft are essential tools in aeronautics research.

NASA uses a range of airplanes to test technologies, collect atmospheric data, evaluate flight systems, support scientific campaigns, train personnel, and study how aircraft behave under demanding conditions. Its research can inform safer, quieter, cleaner, and more efficient future aviation.

Fighter-derived aircraft are particularly useful in some research and support roles because of their performance capabilities. They can operate at high speeds and altitudes, carry specialized equipment, and serve as chase aircraft during flight-test operations.

NASA’s aeronautics work is not the same as military aviation. The agency’s role is research and technology development. Results from NASA programs can later be used by aircraft manufacturers, regulators, airlines, universities, and other public or private organizations.

## The F-5’s Place in Flight Research

The Northrop F-5 is a lightweight, twin-engine fighter design that first flew in the late 1950s. Variants of the aircraft have been operated by military forces around the world for decades.

NASA has also operated F-5 aircraft in support of research activities, particularly at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. Flight research centers need aircraft that can accompany experimental vehicles, observe tests, provide safety support, or help evaluate equipment in real-world flight conditions.

An F-5 flyover does not necessarily mean the jets will be conducting research at the football game itself. The stadium appearance is a public-engagement event. Still, the aircraft type connects directly to the broader history of flight testing and the specialized aviation work carried out at NASA facilities.

NASA’s modern aeronautics portfolio includes research on sustainable aviation fuel, advanced air mobility, automated flight systems, air traffic management, supersonic flight, and reducing the climate and noise impacts of air travel.

## More Than a Pregame Spectacle

Flyovers at major sporting events are often designed to create a memorable moment for attendees. NASA’s stated purpose adds another layer: using the occasion to help audiences connect an aircraft they can see overhead with research that can shape future transportation.

That connection matters because many NASA technologies influence everyday life indirectly. The agency’s research may not always produce a consumer product with a NASA logo, but it can advance fundamental knowledge that supports later engineering work.

For example, NASA aeronautics researchers study airflow, materials, propulsion, human-machine interaction, weather, navigation, and aircraft acoustics. Those fields affect the experience of flying, from fuel use and airport noise to the way pilots and automated systems share information.

The agency is also pursuing the X-59, an experimental aircraft designed to demonstrate a quieter approach to supersonic flight. The goal is to gather data that could help regulators and industry assess whether future commercial supersonic operations might be possible with less disruptive sonic-boom noise.

That kind of work illustrates why NASA continues to operate research aircraft: computer modeling is powerful, but real flights remain essential for validating technology in the atmosphere.

## The Inspiration Tour’s Public Role

NASA’s Inspiration Tour is intended to bring agency representatives, programs, and stories to communities beyond NASA centers and launch sites. Major sporting events offer a large, diverse audience and can create opportunities for people who might not otherwise follow space or aviation news.

For students, a NASA appearance may provide a first introduction to careers in engineering, computer science, aviation maintenance, atmospheric science, communications, or technical operations. NASA’s work depends on far more than astronauts and rocket engineers. The agency employs and collaborates with specialists across scientific, technical, administrative, and creative fields.

The University of Alabama is also part of a state with deep connections to the U.S. space program. Huntsville, Alabama, is home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, a major center for propulsion, space systems, and human exploration work. Although the flyover is planned for Tuscaloosa, it takes place within a state where NASA’s presence has long been significant.

## A Reminder of NASA’s Aviation Heritage

NASA was created in 1958, inheriting the research mission of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Before the Space Age, the NACA conducted foundational work on aircraft design, wind tunnels, engine performance, and aerodynamics.

That legacy remains visible in aviation terminology. The “NACA ducts” used for low-drag air inlets and the NACA airfoil families are among the best-known examples of research that moved from government laboratories into broader engineering practice.

Today’s NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate continues that tradition, although the challenges have evolved. Aviation faces pressure to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, accommodate growing air traffic, and integrate new types of vehicles such as electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

The planned F-5 flyover at Alabama’s game is therefore a public-facing expression of a mission that has been underway for more than a century: improving the science and technology of flight.

## What Fans Can Take Away

For football fans in Tuscaloosa, the flyover will likely last only seconds. But its message is larger than the moment.

NASA’s planned appearance links a familiar public event with the agency’s continuing research in aviation. The three F-5s are not simply symbols of speed or spectacle; they also represent the continuing importance of experimental aircraft and flight operations to NASA’s work.

The event may encourage some attendees to look more closely at the research happening behind the scenes — from quieter aircraft and cleaner propulsion to safer air traffic systems and new approaches to high-speed travel.

For NASA, that public curiosity is one of the goals of the Inspiration Tour.
