# NASA’s CASALS Instrument Could Fill Major Gaps in 3D Earth Maps

Satellites have transformed the way scientists observe Earth, but detailed three-dimensional mapping from orbit still comes with a major limitation: laser instruments generally collect measurements along narrow paths.

That means large areas between those paths may not be directly sampled. For researchers studying forest height, vegetation structure, changing landscapes, or carbon stored in trees, those unsampled gaps can limit what existing datasets can reveal.

NASA’s CASALS instrument is intended to address that problem. According to NASA’s technology highlight, CASALS will pair an ultra-compact lidar system with machine learning tools that can adapt how the instrument surveys the surface below. Rather than collecting data only along fixed, thin tracks, the concept is designed to “sweep” broader areas of terrain and vegetation.

The result could be more complete 3D maps of Earth’s surface, particularly in places where forest and terrain data are sparse.

## Why orbital lidar leaves gaps

Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, measures distance by sending out pulses of laser light and timing how long it takes for reflected light to return to the sensor.

From space, that simple principle can produce powerful information. A pulse that hits the top of a forest canopy returns differently from a pulse that reaches the ground through gaps in leaves and branches. By examining those returns, scientists can estimate forest height, vertical structure, canopy density, and underlying terrain.

However, orbital lidar instruments must balance power, data transmission, instrument size, and the speed of a spacecraft moving around Earth. Many systems therefore take measurements in relatively narrow sampling lines, or footprints, rather than continuously mapping every meter of land below them.

Those lines can be scientifically valuable, but they do not create wall-to-wall coverage on their own. Researchers often combine lidar tracks with broader imagery from optical or radar satellites to estimate conditions in the areas between direct measurements.

That approach works, but it introduces uncertainty. A model is strongest when it is trained and checked against plentiful direct observations. More lidar measurements over a wider swath could provide a better foundation for these larger-scale estimates.

## What NASA says CASALS will do

NASA describes CASALS as an instrument that combines machine learning with an ultra-compact lidar system. The key idea is adaptive observation: using onboard intelligence to help guide where and how the system collects measurements.

In practical terms, an adaptive lidar could prioritize areas that contain more useful or less certain information. For example, it might devote attention to complex forest edges, steep terrain, regions with limited prior coverage, or landscapes undergoing rapid change.

This is different from treating every patch of ground as equally important. Earth-observing instruments have limited observing time, power, and data capacity. If a system can recognize where an additional measurement will add the most scientific value, it may collect more useful data without requiring a much larger satellite payload.

NASA’s source summary emphasizes the goal of adaptively sweeping large swaths of Earth’s surface. That could help bridge the gaps between conventional orbital measurement tracks and make 3D mapping more spatially complete.

## Machine learning is not replacing the laser measurement

The machine learning element is important, but it should not be confused with a system that simply generates maps from software alone.

Lidar provides physical observations: laser pulses interact with vegetation and terrain, and the returned signal contains information about the structure of the surface. Machine learning can help determine how to collect those observations more efficiently, process large volumes of data, or identify where direct sampling is most needed.

This distinction matters for science applications. A predictive map is useful, but direct measurements are essential for validating models. CASALS is intended to improve the collection strategy for lidar data, not eliminate the need for observations.

The approach could also reduce the burden of sending every possible raw observation to the ground. Onboard analysis has become an increasingly important area of spacecraft technology, especially as instruments gather more data than can be easily transmitted in real time.

## Why forests are a major application

Forests are one of the clearest uses for 3D Earth observations. Satellite images can show the horizontal extent of tree cover, but they do not always reveal the vertical complexity of a forest.

Forest height and canopy structure affect estimates of biomass, habitat quality, wildfire behavior, and carbon storage. Two landscapes may look similarly green in a conventional satellite image while containing very different amounts of wood and carbon.

Space-based lidar missions such as NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation, or GEDI, have demonstrated the value of laser measurements for studying forest structure. GEDI has collected detailed observations along tracks across much of the world’s temperate and tropical forests.

CASALS could complement this kind of work by helping future instruments collect broader or more strategically selected observations. In theory, that may be especially useful in regions where forests are highly diverse, difficult to access on the ground, or changing quickly due to drought, logging, storms, or fire.

## Terrain mapping has benefits beyond forestry

The same basic lidar capability can support studies of landforms and surface change.

Accurate elevation measurements are important for understanding flood risk, glacier and ice-sheet change, volcanic landscapes, landslides, erosion, and coastal vulnerability. Vegetation can complicate terrain mapping because trees and shrubs obscure the ground in conventional images. Laser returns can help separate the canopy surface from the land beneath it.

More complete 3D coverage could also improve the reference datasets used in environmental modeling. Scientists building flood models or assessing habitat corridors need reliable topographic information, particularly in places where detailed airborne surveys do not exist.

Still, CASALS should be viewed as a technology development effort rather than a fully described global mapping mission. NASA’s source material highlights the instrument’s intended capabilities, but does not, in the information provided, specify a launch date, host spacecraft, operational orbit, final data products, or the exact geographic coverage it will achieve.

## A compact design could broaden future mission options

The “ultra-compact” aspect of CASALS may be as significant as its adaptive software.

Traditional high-performance lidar instruments can be demanding in terms of size, mass, power, and thermal control. Reducing those requirements could make 3D measurement technology easier to include on future satellite missions, including smaller spacecraft platforms.

That does not automatically mean a compact instrument will match every capability of a larger dedicated mission. Measurement quality depends on laser energy, detector sensitivity, pointing accuracy, orbital altitude, atmospheric conditions, and many other factors.

But miniaturization can increase flexibility. A smaller instrument may enable demonstrations, targeted missions, or constellations that would be difficult to build around a more massive payload.

## What to watch next

NASA’s CASALS announcement points toward a broader shift in Earth observation: instruments are becoming more capable of deciding how to use their limited resources while in orbit.

For CASALS, the next meaningful details will be technical and operational. Scientists will want to know how the adaptive targeting system performs, how much area the instrument can survey, what resolution it can achieve, and how its measurements compare with existing lidar datasets.

The concept is promising because it addresses a genuine observational problem. Earth’s forests and landscapes are too extensive and dynamic to measure comprehensively from a handful of narrow tracks. Better ways to target direct measurements could improve the maps used to understand environmental change.

For now, what is known is that NASA is developing CASALS around compact lidar and machine learning for wider, adaptive surface mapping. What remains unknown from the available announcement is when and where it will fly, and exactly how its data will be distributed and used by the research community.
