# El Niño Then and Now: Comparing Major Pacific Events From Space

El Niño is one of Earth’s most consequential climate patterns. It begins in the tropical Pacific Ocean, but its effects can extend far beyond the equator, influencing rainfall, drought, marine ecosystems, hurricane activity, and seasonal temperatures around the world.

NASA’s Earth Observatory has highlighted how a 35-year satellite altimetry record allows scientists to compare a recent El Niño with some of the strongest events observed in the modern satellite era. The comparison is important because satellites can measure subtle changes in sea-surface height that reveal where warm water—and the heat stored within it—is moving across the Pacific.

The source item provides a broad summary rather than detailed measurements, maps, or a named event year. Its listed publication date is October 23, 2026, so readers should consult the original NASA feature for the specific data and imagery it discusses. What is clear is the scientific value of the record: more than three decades of consistent satellite observations make it possible to place individual El Niño events in a much longer context.

## What Is El Niño?

El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. ENSO is a recurring pattern of coupled changes in the tropical Pacific Ocean and atmosphere.

During neutral conditions, trade winds generally blow from east to west along the equator. These winds help pile warm surface water in the western Pacific, near Indonesia and northern Australia. In the eastern Pacific, near South America, colder deep water can rise toward the surface in a process called upwelling.

During El Niño, those trade winds can weaken or shift. Warm water that is normally concentrated in the western Pacific spreads eastward, raising ocean temperatures across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. This change affects convection, clouds, rainfall, winds, and the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere.

A closely watched indicator is sea-surface temperature in the Niño 3.4 region of the central tropical Pacific. But temperature is only part of the picture. Ocean height measurements provide another vital indicator because warmer seawater expands and takes up more space than colder water.

## Why Sea-Surface Height Is So Useful

Satellite altimetry measures the distance between a satellite and the ocean surface. By combining that measurement with precise information about the satellite’s orbit, scientists can estimate sea-surface height across broad areas of the ocean.

The variations involved are often measured in centimeters, but they can reveal major changes in ocean circulation and heat content.

Higher-than-average sea level in parts of the tropical Pacific often indicates a deeper layer of warm water below the surface. This matters because the upper ocean stores enormous amounts of heat. When trade winds weaken during El Niño, that elevated, warm-water mass can move eastward along the equator.

In satellite visualizations, this movement is often shown as bands of higher sea level crossing the Pacific. Such patterns can help researchers track the development, peak, and decline of an El Niño event.

Sea-surface height is not the same as the long-term global rise in average sea level caused by warming oceans and melting land ice. Instead, El Niño-related height changes are regional and temporary, reflecting the shifting distribution of heat and water within the ocean.

## A 35-Year Record Brings Historical Perspective

A 35-year altimetry record is long enough to include several major ENSO cycles. That enables scientists to compare the shape, timing, and strength of recent events with well-known predecessors.

Among the most significant El Niño episodes in the satellite era are the events of 1997–98 and 2015–16. Both produced unusually strong ocean-atmosphere signals and had widespread consequences, although no two El Niño events unfold in exactly the same way.

The 1997–98 event is often considered one of the strongest El Niños in instrumental records. It was associated with severe rainfall in some regions, drought and wildfire risk in others, and disruptions to fisheries tied to changes in nutrient-rich coastal upwelling.

The 2015–16 event also produced exceptional warmth in the tropical Pacific. It occurred during a period of elevated global temperatures and was linked to widespread impacts, including coral bleaching driven by unusually warm ocean conditions in some regions.

Comparing events through satellite data does not simply create a ranking of “strongest” El Niños. It helps identify meaningful differences. One event may have a pronounced eastern-Pacific warming pattern, while another may be centered farther west. One may build rapidly; another may evolve over many months. These distinctions can affect where weather impacts are most likely to occur.

## El Niño Is Not a Single Global Weather Forecast

A common misconception is that El Niño produces the same outcome every time. In reality, it changes the odds of certain climate patterns rather than guaranteeing a specific local result.

For example, El Niño can alter the position of the jet stream and shift tropical rainfall belts. This can raise the likelihood of wetter or drier conditions in particular seasons and regions. But local weather also depends on other factors, including regional ocean temperatures, atmospheric variability, land conditions, and shorter-lived weather systems.

In the United States, El Niño has often been associated with wetter-than-average winter conditions in parts of the southern tier and milder conditions in portions of the northern tier. However, individual events vary substantially. A forecast informed by ENSO is therefore best understood as a probability-based outlook, not a promise of a particular storm, flood, or drought.

The same caution applies globally. Countries bordering the Pacific may see stronger shifts in rainfall or fishing conditions, but the timing and severity of impacts differ from event to event.

## From Ocean Measurements to Better Climate Monitoring

Satellite altimetry is one component of a broader observing system. Scientists also rely on ocean buoys, drifting floats, ships, tide gauges, atmospheric observations, and climate models.

The Tropical Atmosphere Ocean/Triangle Trans-Ocean Buoy Network, commonly called TAO/TRITON, provides valuable measurements of ocean temperature, winds, and other conditions along the equatorial Pacific. Argo floats sample temperature and salinity through much of the upper ocean. Together with satellites, these systems help researchers observe conditions at the surface and below it.

Long records are especially important because ENSO naturally varies over time. A single event can be dramatic, but it does not by itself establish a long-term climate trend. Researchers need decades of observations to separate short-term variability from broader changes in the climate system.

The 35-year satellite record described by NASA is valuable precisely because it turns individual El Niño events into comparable case studies. It provides a consistent observational baseline for examining how Pacific heat patterns changed during major events and how those changes relate to atmospheric responses.

## Why These Comparisons Matter

El Niño research has practical importance. Seasonal outlooks based partly on ENSO conditions can support planning for water management, agriculture, fisheries, disaster preparedness, and public health.

For coastal communities, changes in winds and upwelling can affect marine food webs and fisheries. For farmers, shifts in seasonal rainfall can influence planting decisions and irrigation needs. For emergency planners, the possibility of elevated flood, wildfire, heat, or drought risk can guide preparedness efforts.

There is also a broader scientific benefit. The Pacific Ocean plays a central role in moving heat between the ocean and atmosphere. Understanding the changing distribution of that heat is essential for interpreting year-to-year swings in global climate.

NASA’s comparison of El Niño events through satellite altimetry underscores a key point: climate observation is most useful when it is sustained. One satellite image can be striking, but a continuous record spanning decades allows scientists to see patterns, contrasts, and exceptions that would otherwise remain hidden.

## The Bottom Line

El Niño is more than a patch of warm water in the Pacific. It is a planet-scale interaction between ocean and atmosphere, with effects that can reach communities far from the equator.

A 35-year record of satellite sea-surface height gives scientists an unusually clear tool for comparing recent El Niño conditions with previous major events. While the source summary does not provide the detailed findings or values for the specific event referenced, the underlying science is well established: changes in ocean height offer a window into the movement of warm water and heat across the tropical Pacific.

As satellite records continue to grow, comparisons between past and present El Niño events should become even more valuable for climate research and seasonal preparedness.
