## NASA Reports Long-Duration RS-25 Test at Stennis

NASA has reported that teams at the agency’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi conducted a major hot-fire test of RS-25 engine No. 10001 on October 21, 2026.

According to the NASA source item, the test ran for nearly eight and a half minutes, or 500 seconds. That is the same approximate amount of time RS-25 engines are intended to operate during the ascent phase of a Space Launch System, or SLS, rocket launch.

The engine was fired at a 111% power level, a figure that can sound counterintuitive without context. It does not mean the engine is operating beyond an accidental or unsafe limit. Instead, RS-25 power settings are measured against an original baseline rating established during the Space Shuttle era. A setting above 100% indicates performance above that historical reference level.

The supplied NASA summary does not specify the full set of objectives, measurements, or test results for engine No. 10001. It does establish, however, that the test was intended to demonstrate performance over a launch-length firing period at the power level used for SLS missions.

## What Is an RS-25 Engine?

The RS-25 is a liquid-fueled rocket engine developed originally for NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Four RS-25 engines power the core stage of NASA’s SLS rocket, working alongside two solid rocket boosters during the initial climb from Earth.

Each engine burns liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, a combination known for high efficiency but also for demanding engineering requirements. Liquid hydrogen must be stored at extremely low temperatures, and the engine must carefully manage high-pressure propellants, combustion temperatures, vibration, and rapidly changing flight conditions.

During an SLS launch, the four RS-25 engines provide the core stage’s liquid-fuel propulsion from ignition through the early portion of ascent. They operate for roughly the first 500 seconds of flight before core-stage shutdown and separation.

The engines used on early SLS missions include upgraded examples with heritage from the shuttle program. NASA and its industry partners have also been developing new RS-25 engines and manufacturing approaches intended to support future SLS flights.

## Why a 500-Second Hot Fire Matters

A rocket-engine test lasting a few seconds can confirm that ignition occurred and that major systems are functioning. A full-duration test does something more demanding: it examines how an engine behaves after sustained exposure to launch-like thermal, mechanical, and fluid-flow conditions.

During a 500-second firing, engineers can study a broad range of performance data, including:

– Thrust and chamber-pressure stability
– Propellant flow and turbopump operation
– Engine temperatures and cooling performance
– Responses from valves, controllers, and sensors
– Structural vibrations and component loads
– The behavior of systems over the full planned burn time

Long tests are especially valuable because some issues are not evident at startup. Heat accumulates over time, materials expand, and complex systems must continue operating within precise limits while handling enormous energy flows.

The RS-25’s role on SLS also makes reliability particularly important. The engines operate as part of an integrated core stage, meaning their performance must be understood not only individually but also in the context of the rocket’s guidance, propellant systems, vehicle structure, and mission profile.

## Understanding the 111% Power Level

NASA’s reference to 111% power is rooted in the RS-25 program’s history.

The “100%” figure for this engine family refers to a baseline thrust level established during earlier development. Over decades of testing, analysis, and upgrades, engineers qualified RS-25 engines for operation at higher settings. The percentage is therefore a program-specific measure, not a general indication that an engine is being pushed 11% beyond its true design capability.

For SLS, operating RS-25 engines at 111% of the original reference power helps provide the performance needed to launch heavy payloads beyond low Earth orbit. SLS is being developed for missions that include the Artemis program’s lunar exploration objectives.

Higher power operation places greater demands on the engine, which is one reason ground tests remain necessary. Engineers need data from real hardware operating under relevant conditions, even when the engine design has extensive flight heritage.

## Why NASA Stennis Is Central to Engine Testing

NASA’s Stennis Space Center, near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, has been a major U.S. rocket-propulsion test site for decades. Its large test stands, specialized propellant infrastructure, instrumentation, and safety systems are built to support high-thrust engine firings.

Testing at Stennis allows engineers to run engines while recording detailed measurements that cannot be collected as comprehensively during a launch. The facility has played a prominent role in testing engines and stages for programs ranging from Apollo-era hardware to the Space Shuttle and SLS.

Rocket engine ground testing is not simply a prelaunch formality. It is part of a continuing process that includes component inspections, manufacturing qualification, acceptance testing, software validation, and post-test data review.

In the case of the RS-25, the tests can support both near-term mission readiness and longer-term production planning. NASA’s Artemis architecture depends on multiple systems working together, and the SLS core stage is one of the largest and most powerful elements in that architecture.

## Connection to NASA’s Artemis Program

SLS is NASA’s heavy-lift rocket for Artemis missions, which aim to return astronauts to the Moon and establish capabilities for continued lunar exploration. The rocket is designed to carry the Orion spacecraft and, on later missions, components that support broader lunar exploration infrastructure.

The RS-25 engines are only one part of that system, but they are fundamental to getting the vehicle off the launch pad. Four engines firing together generate a large portion of the core stage’s thrust, while the solid rocket boosters add substantial additional lift at liftoff.

A full-duration engine firing reflects the practical realities of human spaceflight hardware: flight-proven heritage is valuable, but each configuration, production lot, upgrade, and mission requirement still calls for careful verification.

NASA’s supplied item identifies engine No. 10001 but does not say whether the test was an acceptance test for a specific flight assignment, a development test, or part of a broader certification campaign. It also does not provide detailed performance findings beyond the duration and stated power level. Those distinctions matter when interpreting how a particular test fits into the overall SLS schedule.

## What the Test Does—and Does Not—Tell Us

The reported 500-second hot fire demonstrates that NASA conducted a launch-duration RS-25 engine test at 111% power, based on the agency’s source summary. That is meaningful because it recreates a key operational condition the engine encounters during an SLS ascent.

At the same time, a single engine test should not be treated as a complete measure of readiness for an entire rocket launch. SLS launch preparation involves the core stage, boosters, Orion spacecraft, ground systems, mission software, range safety, weather constraints, and many other technical and operational factors.

The available source does not state whether any anomalies occurred, what data NASA collected, or whether the engine achieved all planned objectives. Those details would require a fuller NASA test report or subsequent program update.

Still, the test illustrates the methodical nature of propulsion work. Before engines leave the ground, they are subjected to controlled, instrumented firings that reproduce the length and intensity of a real mission as closely as possible.

## The Bigger Significance of RS-25 Testing

The RS-25 is a notable example of how spaceflight programs combine heritage technology with new mission demands. Its basic lineage reaches back to the Space Shuttle, yet its current role is tied to a heavy-lift rocket intended for lunar exploration.

Testing at Stennis helps bridge that gap. It provides evidence on how engines and related hardware perform under the specific conditions required for SLS, rather than relying only on historical flight experience.

For NASA, the value of a 500-second firing is not only the visible spectacle of a powerful engine test. It is the engineering data produced across hundreds of seconds of stable operation—data that can inform decisions about engine health, performance margins, production, and future mission planning.
