## NASA Inspects Solar Cells on the NEO Surveyor Sunshade

NASA’s Near-Earth Object Surveyor, or NEO Surveyor, has reached another visible stage of spacecraft development: inspection of its large sunshade after solar cells were installed.

According to NASA’s photojournal update, a technician inspected the sunshade at BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems in Boulder, Colorado, in late July. The structure itself was built by Applied Aerospace in Stockton, California, while SolAero Technologies installed its solar cells in Albuquerque, New Mexico, earlier in the year.

The component may look like a straightforward spacecraft panel, but it will serve two critical and competing jobs. It must help generate electrical power from sunlight while also shielding NEO Surveyor’s sensitive infrared telescope from heat.

That combination is central to the mission’s purpose. NEO Surveyor is being developed to locate and characterize near-Earth objects, including asteroids that could pose a future impact hazard. Its infrared observations are intended to help scientists find objects that are difficult for many ground-based telescopes to detect, particularly dark asteroids and those approaching from directions close to the Sun.

## Why a Sunshade Is Essential for an Infrared Telescope

All objects with a temperature emit thermal radiation, including spacecraft hardware. For an observatory designed to measure faint infrared signals from distant asteroids, unwanted heat can become a major source of interference.

NEO Surveyor’s telescope will observe in infrared wavelengths, detecting the heat emitted by asteroids rather than relying solely on the sunlight they reflect. This is valuable because an asteroid’s brightness in visible light can be misleading. A small but highly reflective object may appear bright, while a much larger, darker asteroid can be comparatively difficult to see.

Thermal infrared measurements provide a more direct way to estimate an object’s size. By combining infrared observations with visible-light data, researchers can better distinguish an asteroid’s dimensions from its surface reflectivity, or albedo.

The spacecraft’s sunshade is therefore not simply a solar-power system. It is part of the observatory’s thermal-control architecture. The shade is designed to block direct solar heating from reaching the telescope and other temperature-sensitive systems. Its solar cells, meanwhile, turn part of that incoming sunlight into the electricity needed for instruments, communications, onboard computers, and spacecraft operations.

Keeping the observatory stable enough for infrared science requires careful control of heat flow, surface materials, geometry, and power generation. Even modest changes in temperature can affect infrared detectors and calibration.

## What NASA’s Update Confirms — and What It Does Not

The NASA item confirms that the sunshade structure had been built, fitted with solar cells, and inspected during spacecraft development. It also identifies the industrial teams involved in those steps: Applied Aerospace, SolAero Technologies, and BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems.

This is a meaningful hardware milestone because it shows a major flight-system component progressing through integration and quality-assurance work rather than existing only as a design concept.

However, the brief source item does not provide a full test report. It does not specify the inspection results, the exact electrical output of the installed solar cells, or the details of any environmental testing referenced in the truncated source summary. It also does not indicate that the complete spacecraft has finished assembly or that it is ready for launch.

As with most space missions, individual hardware inspections are one part of a longer process that includes integration, vibration testing, thermal-vacuum testing, deployment checks, communications testing, and end-to-end mission verification.

## The Goal: Finding Asteroids Before They Find Earth

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office coordinates the agency’s work to detect, track, and assess near-Earth objects. These are asteroids and comets whose orbits bring them into Earth’s neighborhood.

Most near-Earth objects are not dangerous. But a small fraction are large enough and pass close enough to Earth that they require continued monitoring. The key challenge is finding such objects early, ideally decades before any possible impact, when there would be more time to refine orbit predictions and consider response options.

NEO Surveyor is intended to improve the completeness of asteroid detection, with a particular focus on objects large enough to cause severe regional damage if they struck Earth. NASA has long used a benchmark involving near-Earth objects roughly 140 meters (about 460 feet) or larger. Objects in that size range are not necessarily civilization-ending threats, but an impact could have serious consequences over a large area.

Ground-based sky surveys remain indispensable. Facilities such as Pan-STARRS in Hawaii and the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona repeatedly scan the sky and have discovered large numbers of near-Earth objects. Yet ground observations have limitations imposed by weather, daylight, atmospheric effects, and the Sun’s glare.

## A Space-Based View Can Cover a Major Blind Spot

An asteroid approaching from the Sun’s direction is especially challenging to observe from Earth. Ground-based optical telescopes generally cannot safely look close to the Sun, and the bright daytime sky overwhelms faint targets.

This limitation matters because some near-Earth objects occupy orbits that keep them in the inner solar system, where they may often appear near the Sun from Earth’s perspective. The 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor, which exploded over Russia and damaged thousands of buildings with its shock wave, arrived from a sunward direction that made advance detection particularly difficult.

NEO Surveyor is designed to observe from space and use infrared detection to expand coverage of these harder-to-find populations. NASA plans for the mission to operate near the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point, a gravitationally useful region roughly 1.5 million kilometers (about 1 million miles) sunward of Earth.

From that vantage point, the observatory can conduct a systematic survey while maintaining an orientation that supports its thermal design. Its large sunshade is essential to making that observing strategy possible.

## Solar Cells Do More Than Supply Power

Solar arrays are a familiar part of spacecraft engineering, but integrating solar cells onto a large sunshade introduces additional design constraints.

The cells need to produce enough electrical power over the mission’s lifetime while surviving launch vibrations, radiation exposure, temperature cycling, and the vacuum of space. At the same time, their placement and associated electrical hardware must not compromise the shade’s thermal performance or mechanical stability.

A sunshade can experience very different temperatures across its surfaces. The Sun-facing side can become warm, while protected areas closer to infrared instruments must remain comparatively cool. Engineers must account for expansion and contraction of materials, the performance of adhesives and electrical connections, and possible changes in optical coatings over time.

Inspection helps verify that hardware has been installed correctly before it is subjected to later test campaigns. In spaceflight, fixing a defect after launch is usually impossible. That makes workmanship checks, electrical verification, and environmental qualification particularly important.

## A Step Toward a More Complete Asteroid Census

The NEO Surveyor mission will not eliminate asteroid risk. No single telescope can guarantee the discovery of every object, and tracking small bodies remains a continuing scientific task. But the mission is expected to make a substantial contribution to a more complete inventory of potentially hazardous asteroids.

Its infrared measurements should also improve estimates of asteroid size, a property that is crucial for understanding both physical hazards and possible future exploration targets.

The newly inspected solar-cell-equipped sunshade represents a practical but important piece of that broader objective. A successful asteroid survey depends not only on sophisticated detectors and orbital calculations, but also on reliable spacecraft systems that can operate in a tightly controlled thermal environment for years.

For NEO Surveyor, the hardware being examined in Colorado is one of the structures that will allow the mission to look outward — and help Earth gain earlier warning of objects moving through the solar system.
