# Curiosity Prepares to Drill “Nazca” on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover is preparing for a new drilling campaign at a Martian target called “Nazca,” according to a Curiosity mission blog item attributed to planetary scientist Lucy Lim of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

The update describes Curiosity returning to a location only a few meters from a rock informally called “Chiu Chiu” after completing work associated with the “Basque Lakes” drill campaign. Chiu Chiu itself reportedly was not suitable for drilling, prompting the science team to identify another nearby target for sampling.

The planned Nazca drilling operation is potentially important because Curiosity’s drill remains one of the mission’s most capable tools for investigating the chemistry and mineralogy of Martian rocks beneath their weathered surfaces. A new sample could help researchers determine whether nearby rocks formed under similar conditions—or record a changing environment in Gale Crater billions of years ago.

## A note on the source timeline

The supplied source is dated October 28, 2026, with an Earth planning date of October 16, 2026. That date is later than the current time when this article was prepared, so the reported activity should be treated as a future-dated mission update unless independently confirmed by NASA’s active Curiosity news and mission pages.

What is known from the supplied item is limited: Curiosity was said to be near Chiu Chiu, following a Basque Lakes drill campaign, and preparing to drill a rock target named Nazca.

What is not established by the summary alone includes whether the drilling was completed successfully, the exact geological unit being sampled, the target’s composition, and any scientific results from the analysis. Those answers would require a full mission update or subsequent NASA data release.

## Why Curiosity Drills Rocks Instead of Only Examining Them

Curiosity carries cameras, spectrometers, and environmental instruments that can study Mars from the rover’s mast, arm, and deck. But drilling adds a different level of evidence.

Mars rocks are exposed to wind, dust, radiation, temperature swings, and chemical alteration at the surface. These processes can obscure or modify the original material. By collecting powdered rock from below the outer surface, Curiosity can provide cleaner material to its internal laboratories.

The rover’s drill produces a fine sample that can be delivered to two onboard instruments:

– **CheMin**, the Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument, uses X-ray diffraction to identify minerals.
– **SAM**, the Sample Analysis at Mars suite, heats samples and measures released gases to investigate chemical compounds and volatile-bearing materials.

Together, these tools can distinguish among minerals that formed in water, were altered after burial, or accumulated through evaporation. They can also investigate elements and compounds relevant to ancient habitability, including carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and hydrogen-bearing materials.

A successful Nazca sample would therefore be more than a visual inspection of a promising rock. It could become a laboratory-quality comparison point within Curiosity’s broader traverse through Gale Crater.

## The Value of Sampling Rocks Only Meters Apart

It may seem surprising that a rover would move only a short distance after rejecting one potential drill target. On Mars, however, geological differences can occur over very small scales.

One block may be too fractured, too rough, too tilted, or mechanically unsafe for the drill. Another nearby exposure may offer a smoother surface, more coherent rock, or a composition better suited to the campaign’s goals. Operational constraints matter as much as scientific interest: Curiosity’s engineers and geologists must select targets that are both safe to drill and likely to yield a usable powder sample.

Nearby rocks can also reveal meaningful environmental variation. A layered sedimentary outcrop may preserve changes in water chemistry through time. Veins and nodules can indicate later movement of mineral-rich fluids. A resistant block might be cemented differently from surrounding material, pointing to changes after the original sediments were deposited.

Comparing Basque Lakes, Chiu Chiu, and Nazca—if the samples and observations become available—could help the team test whether these rocks belong to the same depositional setting or represent separate episodes in Gale Crater’s long history.

## Gale Crater’s Long Record of Ancient Mars

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater in August 2012 with a central question: could ancient Mars have supported microbial life?

The rover is not designed to detect living organisms directly. Instead, it assesses whether past environments had key ingredients associated with habitability, such as liquid water, chemical energy, and essential elements.

Over more than a decade on Mars, Curiosity has found extensive evidence that Gale Crater once contained lakes, streams, groundwater systems, and sedimentary environments. Mudstones analyzed by the rover have indicated that some ancient lake settings may have been relatively stable and chemically suitable for microbial life.

Curiosity is now exploring the foothills and slopes of Mount Sharp, the mountain at the center of Gale Crater. Mount Sharp’s layered rocks provide a kind of environmental archive. Lower layers are generally associated with ancient lake deposits, while higher terrain records transitions in climate, sediment sources, groundwater activity, and mineral formation.

Each new drill campaign helps fill in gaps in that archive. The point is not merely to catalogue unusual rocks, but to reconstruct how the crater changed as Mars shifted from a wetter early world toward the cold, dry planet seen today.

## What Scientists May Learn From “Nazca”

Without detailed instrument results, it would be premature to predict what Nazca will reveal. Still, a drill target selected after a nearby candidate was rejected is likely to have been chosen for a combination of rock quality, accessibility, and scientific interest.

Several outcomes would be especially useful.

### Mineral clues to water history

Clay minerals, sulfates, carbonates, iron oxides, and silica-rich materials can each provide evidence about the water conditions under which rock formed or changed. For example, clays often form through interactions between rock and water, while certain sulfate minerals can point to more evaporative or acidic conditions.

### Evidence for chemical transitions

Mars was not uniformly wet or dry throughout its history. A sample may help scientists identify transitions between lake deposition, groundwater alteration, drying episodes, or changing acidity and salinity. These shifts are central to understanding how long favorable environments endured.

### Better context for surface observations

Curiosity’s cameras and remote-sensing instruments can map textures, layers, veins, and chemistry across an outcrop. A drilled sample gives those observations a compositional anchor. If Nazca can be tied to a larger visible rock unit, its results may help interpret similar terrain farther along the rover’s route.

### A comparison with earlier drill sites

The strongest scientific result may come from comparison rather than from any single measurement. The Basque Lakes campaign and a potential Nazca sample could allow researchers to ask whether nearby rocks have similar minerals, similar alteration histories, or distinctly different origins.

## Drilling on Mars Remains a Carefully Managed Operation

A Curiosity drilling campaign involves far more than placing a drill bit against a rock. Before drilling, the team evaluates images and instrument data, checks the target’s geometry, considers rover stability, and plans the sequence of arm movements.

The rover may first brush or inspect the surface. It then conducts drilling and sample handling in stages, with engineers monitoring the health of the hardware and scientists reviewing the material produced. The sample must be sieved and portioned before it can be delivered to CheMin or SAM.

This cautious approach reflects the value of the rover’s remaining capabilities. Curiosity has operated far beyond its original prime mission, and every complex activity must balance scientific return against long-term reliability.

## The Bigger Picture: Mars Sample Science Continues

A possible Nazca drill campaign also illustrates why long-lived rover missions matter. The most significant discoveries often emerge from patterns built over many years: repeated measurements, carefully chosen comparisons, and a growing geological map of a region.

Curiosity’s work complements other Mars missions, including NASA’s Perseverance rover in Jezero Crater. Perseverance is collecting and caching rock cores that may eventually be returned to Earth, while Curiosity continues to conduct in-place laboratory analysis in Gale Crater.

The two missions study different landscapes, but both are helping scientists understand an overarching question: when Mars had more abundant liquid water, how widespread and persistent were environments that could have supported life?

For now, Nazca should be viewed as a prospective chapter in that investigation.
