# NASA Explores Commercial Servicing Options for the Hubble Space Telescope

NASA is asking the space industry for information about technologies and mission concepts that could potentially support the Hubble Space Telescope through commercial in-space servicing.

According to NASA, the agency issued a Request for Information (RFI) on October 29 to learn more about industry capabilities. The request concerns possible servicing options for Hubble, one of the most scientifically productive observatories ever placed in orbit.

The announcement is notable because Hubble has not received an astronaut servicing mission since 2009. It also arrives at a time when private companies are developing spacecraft designed to rendezvous with, inspect, refuel, move, or repair satellites in orbit.

However, an RFI is not the same as a funded mission. NASA has not announced a selected commercial provider, a launch date, a specific repair plan, or a commitment to carry out a new Hubble servicing mission.

## What NASA Has Announced

NASA’s action is an information-gathering step. A Request for Information allows an agency to hear from potential vendors and evaluate the maturity of available technologies before deciding whether to pursue a formal procurement or mission.

In this case, NASA is seeking to understand what commercial organizations may be capable of doing to support Hubble in orbit. Potential servicing concepts could involve spacecraft rendezvous, inspection, orbit maintenance, docking, robotic operations, or other approaches relevant to extending the telescope’s useful lifetime.

The available summary does not specify exactly which services NASA may ultimately seek. It does not confirm that Hubble needs a particular component replaced, nor does it identify a final mission architecture.

That distinction matters. Hubble servicing is technically difficult, and any future effort would require detailed engineering studies, safety reviews, funding decisions, and operational planning. A commercial proposal would also need to account for the telescope’s age, its orbit, its unique hardware, and the risk of disturbing an observatory still producing valuable science.

## Why Hubble Still Matters

Launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990, Hubble has transformed astronomy across more than three decades. Its observations have helped scientists measure the expansion of the universe, study the atmospheres of distant worlds, observe star formation, and investigate the evolution of galaxies.

The telescope operates mainly in visible light, ultraviolet light, and a portion of the infrared spectrum. That range makes it highly complementary to newer observatories.

The James Webb Space Telescope, for example, is optimized for infrared astronomy and works far beyond Earth’s orbit near the Sun-Earth L2 point. Hubble, by contrast, remains in low Earth orbit and retains capabilities—especially in ultraviolet observations—that Webb does not duplicate.

Keeping Hubble operational therefore supports a broader observatory system rather than simply preserving a historic spacecraft. Combined observations from Hubble, Webb, ground-based telescopes, X-ray observatories, and gravitational-wave detectors can provide a more complete picture of cosmic events.

## Hubble’s History of Servicing Missions

Hubble was designed to be serviced by astronauts flying on the Space Shuttle. Across five servicing missions between 1993 and 2009, astronauts repaired and upgraded the observatory.

The first mission corrected Hubble’s well-known optical flaw by installing corrective instruments. Later missions added more capable cameras and spectrographs, replaced gyroscopes and batteries, and installed equipment that continues to support its science operations.

The final shuttle servicing mission, STS-125 in 2009, installed the Wide Field Camera 3 and the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Astronauts also repaired two instruments that had stopped functioning.

Those missions were extraordinary achievements, but they were possible because the Space Shuttle could carry astronauts, large replacement hardware, and the specialized tools needed for hands-on work in orbit. The shuttle fleet was retired in 2011, meaning any new servicing campaign would need a fundamentally different approach.

## What Commercial Servicing Could Look Like

Commercial in-space servicing is an emerging part of the space economy. Companies are working on spacecraft that can approach satellites, conduct inspections, extend missions, refuel compatible vehicles, or remove debris.

For Hubble, a commercial vehicle might potentially perform some combination of close-range inspection, orbital assistance, or robotic operations. Yet each option would involve major technical challenges.

Hubble was not designed around modern autonomous docking standards. Safely approaching a large, aging scientific spacecraft requires reliable navigation, careful control of relative motion, and a clear understanding of how contact—or even a very close pass—could affect the telescope.

Robotic replacement of internal Hubble components would be more complex still. The telescope’s serviceable systems were designed for astronauts using specialized tools during shuttle missions. A robotic spacecraft would need to replicate at least some of that dexterity while avoiding damage to delicate instruments and thermal hardware.

Another possible objective could be helping manage Hubble’s orbit. Objects in low Earth orbit gradually lose altitude because of atmospheric drag. An orbit-raising or reboost mission could potentially affect how long Hubble remains in orbit, though NASA has not said that this is the purpose of the RFI.

## A Shift From Government-Only Space Operations

NASA’s request reflects a larger shift in how the agency works with industry. Commercial providers now routinely launch cargo and crew to the International Space Station, deliver lunar payloads, and operate spacecraft capable of increasingly sophisticated orbital maneuvers.

If commercial servicing eventually becomes practical for scientific spacecraft, it could change the economics of preserving valuable assets in orbit. Rather than designing every mission around a one-time operational life, agencies could consider whether inspection, refueling, repairs, or controlled retirement make sense later.

That does not mean every satellite should be serviced. The value depends on the spacecraft’s condition, its scientific or commercial importance, the availability of compatible technology, mission risk, and cost.

Hubble is an especially compelling test case because it remains scientifically useful and has a legacy of successful servicing. At the same time, it is not a simple target. Any intervention would need to justify its risks against the benefits of extending the telescope’s operations.

## What Is Known—and What Is Not

What is known is that NASA has issued an RFI to collect information about commercial in-space servicing capabilities relevant to Hubble.

What is not known is whether NASA will proceed with a mission, which companies may respond, what work a servicing spacecraft might perform, how much such a mission could cost, or when it could launch.

It is also not accurate to describe the RFI as a confirmed Hubble repair mission. NASA is exploring options, not announcing a final operational decision.

For now, the request is best viewed as a sign that NASA is evaluating whether new commercial capabilities could offer practical ways to support one of astronomy’s most enduring observatories.

## Why the Announcement Is Significant

Hubble’s long life has already demonstrated the scientific value of servicing spacecraft rather than treating them as disposable once a component fails. NASA’s latest inquiry raises the possibility that commercial technology could eventually take on part of that role.

The broader significance extends beyond Hubble. Successful robotic or commercial servicing methods could inform future strategies for satellites in low Earth orbit and, eventually, for more distant science missions.

Any Hubble servicing effort remains uncertain. But NASA’s outreach shows that the agency is looking seriously at a future in which orbiting spacecraft may be inspected, maintained, and potentially upgraded by commercial systems long after launch.
