Excerpt: NASA’s Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability, or SSPICY, has launched to demonstrate technologies for approaching and inspecting inactive satellites in orbit. The mission could help advance future spacecraft servicing, safer operations around aging satellites, and debris-prevention strategies.

## NASA’s SSPICY Mission Takes a Step Toward Satellite Servicing

NASA has launched a new technology demonstration intended to explore one of the most difficult tasks in spaceflight: safely getting close to another spacecraft in orbit.

The Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability mission, known as SSPICY, launched on October 1 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, according to NASA. The mission is supported by NASA and is designed to demonstrate technologies that could enable a spacecraft to inspect satellites that are no longer in service.

That capability may sound straightforward, but orbital inspection is technically demanding. A satellite moving hundreds of kilometers above Earth travels at thousands of miles per hour. Two objects in similar orbits may appear to be moving slowly relative to each other, but even small errors in navigation, propulsion, or software can create a collision risk.

SSPICY is therefore not simply a mission to take pictures of an old satellite. It is a test of the systems needed for future in-space operations, including spacecraft navigation, maneuvering, proximity operations, and inspection.

NASA’s source description does not identify every spacecraft involved, the precise inspection targets, or the full list of instruments and maneuvers planned. Those details may be released as the demonstration progresses. What is clear is that the mission is focused on proving technologies that could be useful for satellite repair, servicing, and safer management of objects in Earth orbit.

## Why Inspecting Satellites in Orbit Is Difficult

Spacecraft inspection requires what the aerospace industry calls rendezvous and proximity operations. A servicing spacecraft must determine where it is, identify the target’s position and motion, and approach at a carefully controlled speed and distance.

Unlike a vehicle on Earth, a spacecraft cannot simply stop and hover beside another object. Orbital motion is governed by gravity and velocity. A maneuver that seems intuitive from the ground can cause a spacecraft to drift into a different orbit or move away from its target.

Inspection missions may need to account for several complications:

– The target satellite may be inactive and unable to communicate.
– Its exact orientation may be uncertain.
– It may be slowly tumbling.
– Its surface may contain protruding antennas, solar arrays, or damaged hardware.
– Lighting conditions can shift rapidly as the spacecraft moves between sunlight and Earth’s shadow.

A close-range inspector needs reliable sensors and software to understand these conditions without physical contact. Cameras, onboard processing, guidance systems, and propulsion all have to work together.

SSPICY’s name emphasizes propulsion and inspection capability, two closely linked requirements. Precise propulsion allows a spacecraft to make controlled changes in position. Inspection systems provide the information needed to decide whether it is safe to move closer, remain at a distance, or depart.

## From Inspection to Future In-Space Repairs

NASA’s SSPICY mission is a technology demonstration, not a full operational satellite-repair service. Demonstrations are intended to reduce uncertainty before more complex missions are attempted.

If close-up inspection becomes more routine, it could support several future activities in orbit.

### Diagnosing Satellite Problems

Operators sometimes lose contact with a spacecraft or see performance degrade without knowing exactly why. Ground-based telescopes and radar can track an object and provide useful information, but they cannot always reveal fine details such as a stuck solar array, a damaged antenna, or a loose piece of hardware.

A nearby inspection spacecraft could potentially provide higher-resolution observations. That information could help mission teams assess whether a satellite can continue operating, needs intervention, or should be moved into a disposal orbit.

### Supporting Robotic Servicing

Inspection is also a foundation for robotic repair and life-extension missions. Before a robotic spacecraft can dock with, refuel, reposition, or modify another satellite, it needs a detailed understanding of the target’s condition and motion.

In the longer term, servicing spacecraft could help extend the working lives of valuable satellites. This is particularly relevant for spacecraft in geostationary orbit, where communications satellites can represent major long-term investments. However, the engineering and business case for each servicing mission depends on the satellite, its orbit, compatibility with servicing hardware, and the cost of the mission.

### Improving End-of-Life Decisions

Inspection could also help operators make better decisions about retired spacecraft. An inactive satellite may remain in orbit for years or decades, depending on its altitude. Understanding its condition could assist planning for relocation, removal, or monitoring.

Still, it is important not to overstate what inspection alone can achieve. Looking at an inactive satellite does not remove it from orbit. Debris reduction requires additional capabilities, such as controlled disposal, deorbit propulsion, capture systems, or mission designs that prevent debris from being created in the first place.

## The Orbital Debris Connection

Earth orbit is increasingly crowded with active spacecraft, retired satellites, rocket stages, and fragments from past breakups. Even a small piece of debris can cause serious damage because of the high speeds involved.

NASA tracks many larger objects in orbit, while smaller debris can be difficult or impossible to monitor continuously. Avoiding new debris is therefore a major priority for satellite operators and space agencies.

SSPICY is relevant to this challenge because improved proximity operations and inspection could contribute to more responsible spacecraft management. For example, a mission that can safely assess an inactive satellite could eventually support decisions about whether it poses a risk to other spacecraft.

The broader goal is not necessarily to send an inspection spacecraft to every aging satellite. Instead, missions such as SSPICY can test a set of tools and operational practices that may later be used in specialized servicing, disposal, or debris-remediation efforts.

This work also complements prevention. Designing satellites with reliable disposal systems, limiting the release of objects during normal operations, and avoiding destructive events in orbit remain essential parts of debris mitigation.

## A Growing Field of On-Orbit Operations

SSPICY arrives during a period of growing interest in on-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. Governments and commercial companies are developing spacecraft that can rendezvous with other objects, inspect them, extend their operational life, or potentially remove them from congested orbits.

These activities create opportunities, but they also require careful coordination. A spacecraft that can approach another satellite must operate transparently and safely. Operators need to consider collision avoidance, mission authorization, communications, and the concerns of other satellite owners.

The same technologies that enable beneficial servicing can be sensitive because close approaches in space have security implications. For that reason, spacecraft inspection missions need clear operational plans and responsible behavior.

NASA’s technology demonstrations can help establish technical knowledge that benefits civil space operations. By testing propulsion, navigation, and inspection in real orbital conditions, missions such as SSPICY can reveal limitations that are not obvious in ground simulations.

## What to Watch Next

The most meaningful SSPICY updates will likely concern how well its spacecraft can navigate near target objects and collect inspection data. NASA may also provide information about the mission’s sensors, propulsion performance, autonomy, or operational lessons.

Key questions include how close SSPICY can safely approach, how accurately it can determine a target’s orientation, and how its systems respond to uncertain or changing conditions. Those results will matter more than the launch alone.

The mission’s importance lies in its practical focus. Space agencies and satellite operators increasingly need ways to understand, service, and responsibly retire spacecraft already in orbit. SSPICY will not solve orbital debris on its own, but it could help demonstrate a set of capabilities needed for a more sustainable orbital environment.
