# BepiColombo Nears Mercury After an Eight-Year Journey

ESA and JAXA’s BepiColombo mission is approaching the final stage of one of the most technically demanding planetary journeys ever attempted.

A new European Space Agency video, published ahead of the mission’s October 2026 launch anniversary, asks team members to describe BepiColombo in only three words. Responses including “complex,” “collaborative” and “transformative” offer a concise summary of the project’s character.

Those words are not simply celebratory. They reflect the practical reality of sending two science orbiters to Mercury, the innermost planet in the Solar System. Mercury is difficult to reach, difficult to operate around and still full of scientific questions.

According to the ESA source item, BepiColombo is scheduled to arrive at Mercury on 9 December 2026. The supplied video summary focuses on the people behind the mission rather than providing new technical updates, so it should be viewed as a milestone feature rather than a detailed mission-status bulletin. Final orbital operations and science timelines can change as mission controllers respond to spacecraft and navigation conditions.

## Why Mercury Is Such a Challenging Destination

At first glance, Mercury may appear easier to reach than the outer planets. It is relatively close to the Sun, and its orbit lies inside Earth’s. But travelling inward through the Solar System is not a matter of simply aiming a spacecraft toward the Sun.

Earth and other planets orbit the Sun at high speed. A spacecraft leaving Earth already carries substantial sideways velocity. To enter orbit around Mercury, it must reduce much of that solar-orbiting energy. Otherwise, it would race past Mercury rather than being captured by its gravity.

This is one reason BepiColombo has spent years travelling through the inner Solar System. Instead of carrying enough propellant to perform one enormous braking manoeuvre, the mission has used a carefully planned sequence of gravity-assist flybys.

The spacecraft has flown past Earth, Venus and Mercury itself, using each encounter to reshape its trajectory and gradually lower its speed relative to Mercury. These flybys are a powerful demonstration of orbital mechanics, but they also make the mission long and operationally demanding.

The trip has involved one Earth flyby, two Venus flybys and multiple Mercury flybys. Each close approach required precise navigation and gave the spacecraft’s instruments opportunities to collect data before the formal orbital science mission begins.

## A Joint Mission With Two Orbiters

BepiColombo is a partnership between the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA. Its name honours Giuseppe “Bepi” Colombo, an Italian mathematician and engineer whose work helped explain Mercury’s unusual rotation and contributed to planning earlier Mercury missions.

The spacecraft carries two primary science orbiters:

– **ESA’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO)**, designed to study Mercury’s surface, interior, exosphere and environment near the planet.
– **JAXA’s Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter, known as Mio**, designed to investigate Mercury’s magnetic field and the charged-particle environment around the planet.

During the long cruise phase, the orbiters travel together with the Mercury Transfer Module, which provides solar-electric propulsion. This propulsion system uses electricity from solar arrays to accelerate ions and produce a gentle but highly efficient thrust over long periods.

That approach is well suited to an extended interplanetary journey. It is not fast in the everyday sense, but it enables the spacecraft to change its orbit around the Sun while conserving propellant.

The configuration will change as BepiColombo enters Mercury orbit. The transfer module is not intended to operate as part of the final science mission, and the two orbiters will ultimately work in different orbits tailored to their scientific roles.

## A Planet With an Outsized Scientific Importance

Mercury is the smallest planet in the Solar System and the closest one to the Sun. It has a heavily cratered surface, a very thin atmosphere known as an exosphere, a large iron-rich core and a global magnetic field.

These features make it an important target for planetary science.

Mercury’s core is unusually large compared with the planet’s overall size. Understanding its structure could help scientists test theories about how rocky planets formed and evolved early in Solar System history. Researchers are still working to explain why Mercury has such a high metal content and how its interior has changed over billions of years.

The planet also has a magnetic field, despite being much smaller than Earth. Mercury’s magnetic environment is constantly shaped by the solar wind, the stream of charged particles flowing outward from the Sun. Because Mercury is so close to the Sun, this interaction can be especially intense and variable.

BepiColombo is expected to study how the solar wind affects the planet’s magnetosphere, surface and sparse exosphere. These observations may provide broader insight into space weather and into the ways stellar activity can influence planets.

## Building on Earlier Mercury Exploration

BepiColombo is not the first mission to visit Mercury, but it is designed to expand greatly on what came before.

NASA’s Mariner 10 spacecraft made three Mercury flybys in the 1970s, becoming the first mission to return close-up images of the planet. Decades later, NASA’s MESSENGER mission entered orbit around Mercury in 2011 and operated until 2015.

MESSENGER transformed scientific understanding of Mercury. It mapped much of the planet, identified evidence of water ice in permanently shadowed polar craters and revealed surprising chemical features on the surface. It also showed that Mercury’s magnetic field is offset from the planet’s centre.

BepiColombo is intended to provide complementary measurements, including closer examination of the planet’s interior and magnetic environment. With two dedicated orbiters, the mission can study Mercury and its surrounding space environment in ways that are difficult for a single spacecraft to achieve.

The ability to compare observations from different locations will be particularly valuable when studying changes driven by solar activity.

## The Engineering Problem of Operating Near the Sun

Reaching Mercury is only one part of the challenge. Operating there presents another.

Solar radiation near Mercury is far stronger than at Earth. The planet also experiences extreme temperature differences between sunlit and shadowed areas. A spacecraft must protect sensitive electronics and scientific instruments while maintaining stable power, communications and orientation.

BepiColombo’s design includes specialised thermal controls, heat-resistant materials and solar arrays engineered for the intense sunlight of the inner Solar System. Its spacecraft architecture reflects years of testing and design trade-offs.

These constraints help explain why “complex” is an appropriate description from the mission team. Complexity is not just about having many instruments or a long flight plan. It is built into nearly every decision, from the gravity-assist trajectory to the hardware that must survive near the Sun.

## Collaboration Is Central to the Mission

The video’s emphasis on collaboration is also significant. Major space missions depend on far more than the scientists whose names appear on instrument papers.

BepiColombo has required work from spacecraft engineers, flight dynamics specialists, mission controllers, instrument teams, software developers, ground-station operators and researchers across Europe, Japan and partner institutions worldwide.

International missions can combine scientific expertise and distribute the cost and responsibility of ambitious exploration. They also require detailed coordination, particularly when multiple spacecraft, agencies and control systems must operate together for years.

As BepiColombo approaches its planned arrival, its journey is a reminder that planetary exploration is often measured in decades. Concepts, construction, launch, cruise, arrival and scientific analysis each demand patience.
