Excerpt: Rosetta’s famous selfie placed a spacecraft, a comet and the distant Sun in one frame. Here is what the image revealed about ESA’s landmark mission to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko—and what remains unclear about the cited APOD listing.

## Rosetta’s Selfie Put a Spacecraft and a Comet in the Same Frame

Few spacecraft images convey the scale and strangeness of deep-space exploration as effectively as Rosetta’s “selfie.” The image shows part of the European Space Agency spacecraft in the foreground, including one of its solar arrays, with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko beyond it.

The view was not merely a novelty. It documented a major moment in planetary exploration: a spacecraft operating close enough to an active comet nucleus to photograph itself against that small, irregular world.

The source item supplied for this article is labeled “APOD: 2026 October 24 – Rosetta’s Selfie” and links to NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day archive. However, the listed publication date is in the future relative to the current date, and the available source summary is incomplete. As a result, the precise image, caption and explanation intended for that APOD entry cannot be independently confirmed here.

What is well established is that ESA’s Rosetta mission obtained famous self-portraits near comet 67P during its 2014–2016 encounter. Those images remain important visual records of a mission that fundamentally improved scientists’ understanding of comets.

## A Selfie Made by a Comet Lander Camera

Rosetta’s best-known selfie was taken in September 2014, shortly after the spacecraft arrived at comet 67P. It was created using the CIVA camera system aboard Philae, Rosetta’s small lander.

Philae was still attached to Rosetta when the image was acquired. The CIVA system produced multiple views that could be assembled into a mosaic, revealing part of Rosetta’s body and solar panels, the uneven comet surface, and the dark backdrop of space.

The mission was operating roughly tens of kilometres from the comet at that stage. That may sound distant in everyday terms, but it was extraordinarily close for a spacecraft visiting a small, weak-gravity body moving through the inner Solar System.

The technical circumstances also make the picture remarkable. Rosetta and Philae were not taking a casual snapshot. Scientists and engineers had to plan observations while navigating around a comet with an irregular shape, a changing dust environment and gravity so weak that conventional orbital operations become complicated.

### Why the image looks unusual

The comet in Rosetta imagery is not a smooth, bright “dirty snowball,” the long-standing popular description often associated with comets. Comet 67P is a dark, rugged object with cliffs, pits, fractured terrain and distinct lobes connected by a narrow “neck.”

Its dark appearance reflects the fact that comet surfaces can be coated in dust and carbon-rich material. Ice is present beneath and within the surface, but it is not necessarily exposed everywhere in a way that makes the nucleus appear white.

In Rosetta’s selfie, the spacecraft’s manufactured geometry contrasts sharply with the comet’s irregular form. That juxtaposition offers an immediate sense of the mission’s achievement: a human-built probe had reached and worked beside an ancient object from the Solar System’s outer regions.

## Rosetta’s Mission Changed Comet Science

ESA launched Rosetta in 2004. After a long journey involving gravity-assist flybys of Earth and Mars, the spacecraft entered orbit around comet 67P in August 2014. It became the first spacecraft to orbit a comet nucleus.

Rosetta’s mission also delivered Philae toward the surface in November 2014, marking the first controlled landing attempt on a comet. Philae’s touchdown was difficult: its anchoring systems did not function as planned, and the lander bounced before coming to rest in a shaded location. Even so, it returned valuable measurements during its initial operating period.

Rosetta continued studying 67P as the comet approached the Sun and became more active. Its instruments examined the nucleus, measured dust and gas, investigated the comet’s magnetic and plasma environment, and monitored changes caused by solar heating.

The mission concluded in September 2016, when Rosetta was deliberately guided onto the comet’s surface. This controlled descent enabled close-range observations until the spacecraft’s final contact.

## What Rosetta Found at Comet 67P

Rosetta’s data showed that comets are dynamic bodies rather than static leftovers. As 67P warmed during its journey toward the Sun, volatile materials beneath the surface turned into gas, carrying dust outward and helping create the coma and tail associated with active comets.

The mission observed jets, outbursts, collapsing cliffs and moving surface material. These changes demonstrated that a comet’s landscape can evolve over a relatively short period as sunlight drives activity.

Rosetta also detected a range of molecules in the comet’s surrounding gas. Among the significant findings was molecular oxygen, detected by the ROSINA instrument suite. Researchers considered possible explanations for its origin, including the idea that some oxygen could have been incorporated into cometary material very early in Solar System history.

The spacecraft’s observations also informed a major question about Earth’s water. Measurements of the ratio of deuterium to hydrogen in 67P’s water differed substantially from Earth’s ocean water. That result does not rule out comets as one source of Earth’s water, but it indicates that comets like 67P were unlikely to have been the sole or dominant source.

## Why a Spacecraft Selfie Matters Scientifically

A selfie is not automatically a scientific measurement. Yet images of a spacecraft near its target can provide valuable operational context.

They show the relative geometry between spacecraft hardware and the environment being studied. They can also help communicate the scale of a mission in ways that charts and instrument readouts cannot. In the case of Rosetta, the self-portrait made an abstract accomplishment tangible: orbiting a comet was no longer just a mission milestone in a press release.

Public imagery also has a practical role in science communication. Complex missions depend on long-term public support, international partnerships and an understanding of why basic research matters. Rosetta’s selfie became a memorable visual shorthand for careful, decades-long exploration.

It also connected the spacecraft to the questions it was designed to investigate. Comets preserve material from the early Solar System, although they have also been altered by heating, radiation and repeated trips near the Sun. By studying these bodies closely, scientists can test ideas about the ingredients and processes that shaped planets.

## What the Future-Dated APOD Listing Does—and Does Not—Confirm

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day is a long-running daily feature that pairs an astronomical image with an explanation by a professional astronomer. APOD frequently revisits historic missions and images, so a Rosetta-themed entry would fit its editorial approach.

Still, the supplied listing alone does not establish which Rosetta selfie it intends to feature, whether it uses the 2014 CIVA mosaic, or what specific scientific point its accompanying explanation makes. The future-dated metadata and truncated summary should be treated cautiously.

The broader story is clear, however. Rosetta’s self-portrait is part of a rigorously documented ESA mission archive, and it captures an authentic turning point in comet exploration.

## A Lasting Image From a Landmark Mission

Rosetta’s selfie remains compelling because it combines engineering, exploration and planetary science in a single scene. The solar-panel-equipped spacecraft looks familiar; the comet behind it looks alien. Together, they show how far robotic exploration has advanced.

Before Rosetta, close comet encounters had already yielded important discoveries. Rosetta went further by remaining with its target for more than two years, observing changes as 67P moved through a crucial segment of its orbit.

The mission did not solve every question about comets or the origins of Earth’s water and organic chemistry. Instead, it supplied detailed evidence that scientists will continue to analyze for years. Its iconic selfie is a reminder that even a small, dark comet can contain a large scientific story.
