## NASA and SpaceX Target CRS-35 Station Resupply Launch

NASA says SpaceX is targeting 6:33 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, for its 35th commercial resupply services mission to the International Space Station.

The flight, commonly referred to as CRS-35, is intended to deliver science investigations, crew supplies, and equipment to the orbital laboratory. Its most notable cargo item is expected to be the final set of International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays, or iROSAs.

NASA has announced that it will provide coverage of the launch and the spacecraft’s arrival at the station. As with all spaceflight schedules, the target date and time can change because of weather, launch-range availability, technical checks, or station operations.

The agency’s announcement identifies the planned launch time and broad cargo categories, but the supplied information does not specify the launch site, the particular Dragon spacecraft assigned to the mission, the exact docking time, or the complete cargo manifest. Those details are typically confirmed closer to launch through NASA mission briefings and coverage plans.

## Why CRS-35 Matters for the Space Station

Cargo flights are a routine but essential part of International Space Station operations. The orbiting laboratory is continuously inhabited, and its crew depends on periodic deliveries of food, clothing, spare parts, experiment hardware, and other provisions from Earth.

But these missions do more than restock a remote outpost. They also support scientific research that cannot easily be done on the ground. Microgravity changes how fluids behave, how materials solidify, how cells grow, and how combustion unfolds. That environment allows researchers to test questions in biology, physics, technology development, and human health.

A resupply mission can carry experiments for installation in the station’s pressurized laboratories, hardware for external platforms, and equipment needed to maintain the complex itself. Return-capable cargo vehicles can also bring completed experiments and samples back to Earth for detailed analysis.

For CRS-35, the delivery of the final roll-out solar arrays gives the mission an additional infrastructure role. Solar power is central to every part of station life, from life-support systems and computing to communications, research equipment, and the batteries that keep the facility powered while it passes through Earth’s shadow.

## The Final ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays

The International Space Station’s original solar arrays have generated electricity since the earliest phases of station assembly. They have performed remarkably well, but decades in low Earth orbit take a toll.

Solar arrays face extreme temperature cycling, radiation exposure, and repeated transitions between intense sunlight and darkness. Over time, their ability to generate electricity gradually declines. The ISS power system was designed with resilience and operational margins, but maintaining adequate generation capacity is a long-term priority.

The iROSA upgrade program addresses that challenge. The newer arrays use a compact, flexible design that can be rolled up for launch and then extended in space. Once installed, they augment the output of existing solar-array wings rather than requiring the original arrays to be removed.

This approach makes practical use of the station’s established power architecture while adding modern photovoltaic capability. The upgraded arrays are installed during spacewalks, with astronauts attaching them to prepared mounting locations and connecting them to the station’s electrical system.

NASA’s description of CRS-35 calls the payload the “final set” of ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays. That suggests the mission is expected to complete the planned series of solar-array deliveries for this upgrade effort. Completion would mark an important maintenance milestone for a station that has been continuously occupied since November 2000.

## How More Power Supports Research and Operations

Electrical power may sound like a background engineering issue, but it determines what the space station can do.

The ISS needs electricity for environmental control, air revitalization, water processing, communications, navigation, computers, lighting, and robotic systems. It also needs power for scientific payloads, some of which require precise thermal control, automated imaging, data transmission, or long operating periods.

Additional solar-generation capacity can help the station operate with greater flexibility as its systems age and as power demands shift. It can also support future research planning by preserving margin in the electrical system.

The upgrade is especially significant because the International Space Station is an international facility with modules and hardware supplied by multiple partner agencies. NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency all contribute to operations and research. Reliable power underpins that entire cooperative enterprise.

## SpaceX’s Role in NASA Cargo Missions

CRS-35 will be the 35th SpaceX commercial resupply services mission to the station for NASA, according to the agency’s announcement.

SpaceX has flown cargo missions to the ISS for more than a decade under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services program. The program changed how NASA obtains routine transportation to low Earth orbit: instead of owning and operating every cargo spacecraft directly, the agency purchases transportation services from commercial providers while setting mission requirements and overseeing safety and integration.

SpaceX’s Dragon cargo spacecraft is designed to carry supplies to the station and return selected cargo to Earth. That return capability is valuable for researchers, since biological specimens and hardware exposed to microgravity may need laboratory examination soon after landing.

Commercial cargo missions also demonstrate the broader role of private companies in U.S. space operations. NASA remains deeply involved in mission planning, payload integration, station coordination, and public coverage, while commercial partners provide launch and spacecraft services.

## What to Watch During Launch and Arrival Coverage

NASA’s planned coverage will likely focus on two major phases: liftoff and the cargo spacecraft’s rendezvous with the ISS.

At launch, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is expected to place the cargo spacecraft into orbit. After separation from the rocket’s upper stage, the spacecraft begins a series of orbital adjustments to catch up with the station. Reaching the ISS is not as simple as traveling upward; the vehicle must match the station’s altitude, orbital path, speed, and timing.

Arrival may occur a day or more after launch, depending on the mission profile. NASA’s source summary confirms coverage of the arrival but does not provide a scheduled date or time.

Once at the station, the cargo vehicle would be expected to conduct an autonomous rendezvous and docking sequence, subject to standard checks by mission controllers and the ISS crew. After docking, astronauts can begin transferring supplies and preparing hardware for later installation.

The solar arrays themselves would not necessarily be installed immediately. External hardware delivery, robotic handling, spacewalk planning, and electrical integration are separate operational steps. NASA has not provided those details in the source information supplied for this article.

## A Long-Term Upgrade for a Long-Lived Laboratory

The ISS was never meant to be static. Since its first components reached orbit in 1998, the complex has been assembled, expanded, repaired, and upgraded. New modules, instruments, docking systems, communications hardware, and external platforms have helped it remain productive for more than two decades.

The final iROSA delivery fits that pattern. It is a practical upgrade to an aging but still highly capable research facility. Rather than replacing the ISS power system wholesale, NASA and its partners are increasing its capability through targeted hardware additions.

For the crews living aboard the station, the mission will be another carefully planned supply delivery. For the broader human-spaceflight program, it represents continued investment in the infrastructure that enables research in orbit today while agencies and companies develop future destinations in low Earth orbit, around the Moon, and beyond.

NASA’s October 13 target remains a planned date, not a completed event. Updated schedules, webcast links, mission-specific cargo details, and arrival information should be checked through NASA’s official station and launch coverage channels as the mission approaches.
