## NASA and SpaceX Prepare the 35th ISS Resupply Mission

NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, to launch the agency’s 35th commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The planned flight, often referred to as CRS-35, is expected to carry scientific investigations, supplies, and equipment for the crew aboard the orbiting laboratory. NASA announced the target date in its mission overview, while noting that launch schedules can change because of weather, technical readiness, range availability, and ISS operations.

Cargo missions may receive less public attention than crewed launches, but they are central to the station’s scientific output and day-to-day reliability. The ISS depends on regular deliveries of food, clothing, maintenance hardware, spare parts, research payloads, and other essential materials that cannot be produced on board.

The mission is also another example of NASA’s use of commercial spacecraft and launch providers to maintain a continuous logistics chain to low Earth orbit.

## What NASA Has Confirmed So Far

NASA’s mission overview states that the SpaceX 35th Commercial Resupply Services mission is targeting a launch no earlier than Oct. 13 and will deliver science investigations, supplies, and equipment to the ISS.

That confirms the mission’s broad purpose: sustaining both the station’s research program and its operational needs.

However, the information provided in the mission summary does not identify the complete cargo manifest, the individual research experiments, the precise launch time, launch location, spacecraft hardware assignment, or the planned return date. Those details are commonly released closer to launch through NASA mission briefings, cargo previews, and live coverage announcements.

It is therefore important to distinguish between what is known and what remains to be announced. The mission is planned as an ISS cargo delivery, but the exact scientific payloads and operational hardware on this particular flight have not been detailed in the source information available here.

## Why ISS Cargo Missions Matter

The International Space Station is both a home for astronauts and a continuously operating microgravity laboratory. Keeping it functional requires a steady flow of cargo from Earth.

Some delivered supplies support the crew directly. These can include packaged food, personal items, clothing, medical supplies, and other consumables. Other items support the station itself, including replacement components, tools, computer equipment, filters, communications hardware, and materials used for maintenance.

Science cargo is especially important. Experiments aboard the ISS investigate topics ranging from human health and plant growth to fluid physics, materials science, combustion, Earth observation, and technology demonstrations. Microgravity changes how many physical and biological processes behave, allowing researchers to study phenomena that are difficult or impossible to isolate in ground-based laboratories.

A resupply mission can also return experiments and equipment to Earth. SpaceX’s Dragon cargo spacecraft has historically provided a capability that is especially useful for ISS research: the ability to bring substantial cargo back through Earth’s atmosphere for recovery. Returned samples may be analyzed by scientists after exposure to the space environment or after completing an experiment in orbit.

## Commercial Resupply Services and NASA’s Space Station Strategy

NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services program uses privately developed spacecraft to deliver cargo to the ISS under NASA contracts. The approach differs from the era when NASA operated its own Space Shuttle fleet for nearly all major U.S. space station logistics.

Through commercial contracts, NASA buys transportation services while companies develop and operate the vehicles. SpaceX has been a major participant in the program, using its Dragon spacecraft for cargo missions to the station.

This model is part of a broader NASA strategy for low Earth orbit. The agency continues to support the ISS while also encouraging commercial capabilities that could eventually serve private research customers, government agencies, and future commercial space stations.

The arrangement does not eliminate NASA oversight. Missions carrying NASA cargo must meet safety, integration, and operational requirements. NASA and its international partners also coordinate visiting spacecraft carefully because the station has limited docking and berthing capacity, and mission timing must fit around crew activities, spacewalks, other cargo vehicles, and orbital mechanics.

## Science in Microgravity: More Than a Delivery

The scientific importance of a cargo mission depends on its payload, which has not yet been fully outlined for CRS-35. Still, the broad categories of ISS research offer a useful picture of why these launches matter.

### Human health and spaceflight medicine

The ISS provides a platform for studying how the human body adapts to long-duration spaceflight. Researchers investigate changes in bone density, muscle mass, vision, immune response, sleep, and cardiovascular health. Such work supports future missions farther from Earth, including potential journeys to the Moon and Mars.

Results can also inform medicine on Earth. Research into tissue behavior, drug development, and disease mechanisms may benefit from the unusual conditions of microgravity.

### Materials and physical sciences

Without gravity-driven settling and convection, scientists can observe fluid behavior, crystal growth, combustion, and metal processing in new ways. These studies can help researchers test models of fundamental physics and explore improved manufacturing techniques.

### Biology, agriculture, and life-support systems

Growing plants and studying microbes in orbit are practical as well as scientific pursuits. Future explorers will need more self-sufficient systems for food production and environmental control. ISS experiments help identify how living systems respond to radiation, confinement, altered day-night cycles, and microgravity.

### Technology demonstrations

Cargo flights can carry new instruments and test hardware intended for use on future spacecraft. Technologies may include sensors, robotic systems, communications equipment, environmental-control components, and small satellites deployed from the ISS.

## The Operational Importance of Regular Launches

A successful cargo mission is not simply a single delivery. It is part of a carefully managed logistics system.

The ISS has hosted people continuously since 2000, making reliable resupply essential. The station’s multinational partners—including NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency—coordinate spacecraft traffic and shared laboratory operations.

Regular cargo flights also provide flexibility. If a component fails or an experiment needs follow-up equipment, a future vehicle may be able to carry replacement hardware. If weather or a technical concern delays one mission, planners can adjust station inventories and schedules, although sustained delays can place greater pressure on available resources.

For this reason, mission readiness involves more than the launch vehicle. Teams must prepare the cargo, verify spacecraft systems, coordinate ISS crew procedures, assess orbital conditions, and ensure that docking or berthing plans work alongside other visiting vehicles.

## What to Watch Before Launch

As the target date approaches, NASA is likely to provide more detailed updates on the CRS-35 mission. The most useful information to watch for includes the confirmed launch date and time, launch site, spacecraft details, cargo list, research investigations, station arrival schedule, and any post-mission return plans.

NASA’s launch schedule may also clarify whether the mission will be broadcast live through NASA’s official channels. These broadcasts usually include prelaunch briefings, commentary during ascent, and coverage of the spacecraft’s arrival at the space station.

For now, the key point is straightforward: NASA and SpaceX are preparing another logistics mission intended to keep the International Space Station supplied and scientifically productive. While the full manifest has not yet been released in the available mission overview, CRS-35 represents the continuing infrastructure behind research in orbit.

## A Routine Mission With Long-Term Value

ISS cargo missions can appear routine because they happen regularly. Yet their reliability is one of the reasons the station can function as a long-lived research facility.

Every delivery helps maintain a complex laboratory moving around Earth at roughly 17,500 mph. It supports the people living there, the instruments collecting data, and the experiments that may take weeks, months, or years to complete.

CRS-35 is therefore more than a shipment to orbit. It is one link in the operational chain that enables international cooperation in space and helps researchers use the ISS as a testbed for the technologies and knowledge needed beyond low Earth orbit.
