Excerpt: The International Space Station may orbit 250 miles above Earth, but its crews still make room for Halloween. From improvised costumes to floating photo sessions, the holiday offers astronauts a small but meaningful connection to life at home.

## Halloween Has Reached Low Earth Orbit

Halloween is usually associated with doorbells, costumes, carved pumpkins, and neighborhood gatherings. None of those traditions can happen in quite the same way aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where astronauts and cosmonauts live in a tightly managed scientific laboratory orbiting Earth at roughly 17,500 mph.

There are no children arriving at the station’s hatch for candy. There are no haunted houses, bonfires, or autumn streets outside. Yet crew members have repeatedly found ways to mark Halloween, usually through costumes, themed photographs, and lighthearted activities shared with people on Earth.

NASA’s account of Halloween aboard the ISS highlights a broader truth about long-duration human spaceflight: even in an environment shaped by strict schedules, safety rules, and demanding research work, small cultural traditions matter. Holidays can offer a moment of creativity and normalcy for people living far from home.

## Costumes in a Spacecraft Are Not Quite Like Costumes on Earth

An ISS Halloween costume often begins with a major limitation: astronauts cannot simply visit a costume store. Nearly every item sent to the station must be packed, launched, tracked, and justified within the constraints of cargo capacity and crew operations.

That means many costumes are improvised from materials already available on board. Clothing, packaging, tape, mission patches, props, and ordinary station supplies can be repurposed into something humorous or recognizable. A crew may coordinate around a theme, or individual astronauts may create their own designs.

Microgravity also changes the effect. Loose fabric can float into equipment, while small objects may drift away if they are not secured. Anything used for a costume has to remain compatible with the station’s safety requirements. The ISS is not a movie set; it is a sealed spacecraft where air quality, fire safety, and access to emergency equipment are always priorities.

For that reason, a space-based costume is generally simple, practical, and temporary. The goal is not elaborate realism. It is a shared moment of fun that does not interfere with work or station systems.

## Why Holidays Matter to Space Crews

Life aboard the ISS is highly structured. Crew members conduct scientific experiments, maintain life-support systems, exercise for hours each day, participate in medical research, communicate with mission control, and prepare for arriving or departing spacecraft.

The station is also an international workplace. NASA astronauts live and work alongside colleagues from agencies including Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency. Crews may spend months together in a relatively small living and working environment.

In that setting, holidays can serve several purposes.

First, they provide a connection to family, friends, and familiar traditions on Earth. Astronauts are often away from home for major occasions, including birthdays, national holidays, and seasonal celebrations. A costume photo or shared themed meal cannot replace being home, but it can help mark the passage of time and preserve a sense of personal identity.

Second, celebrations can support morale. Space agencies carefully study the psychological and social demands of isolation, confinement, and long missions. While Halloween activities are not a medical intervention, informal group events can help crews relax and reinforce social bonds.

Finally, these moments help the public see astronauts as people rather than only as operators of complex machines. Images of a crew celebrating a holiday can make the ISS more relatable, especially for students who may be curious about what daily life in orbit is actually like.

## A Tradition Shaped by Practical Limits

The ISS has hosted people continuously since November 2000, and over the years crews have marked many holidays in orbit. Halloween is particularly well suited to photographs because costumes can be quickly understood across cultures and languages.

However, the details of any given celebration vary. Not every crew will have the same amount of free time, and not every Halloween will produce a major public event. Mission schedules can include spacewalk preparations, cargo vehicle arrivals, scientific operations, maintenance tasks, or emergency-response training. Those responsibilities come first.

It is also important not to assume that all costumes or activities are preplanned by NASA. Some may be organized by crew members themselves using personal items or materials already available aboard the station. NASA may later share selected photographs through agency channels, but public images do not necessarily document every aspect of a crew’s private holiday observance.

What is clear is that astronauts have a long history of finding creative ways to celebrate milestones in orbit without compromising the station’s primary role as a research laboratory.

## The ISS Is Both a Laboratory and a Home

The International Space Station is often described as the largest human-made object in space and one of the most complex international engineering projects ever assembled. Its primary mission is scientific research and technology demonstration in microgravity.

Experiments on the station span fields such as human physiology, combustion, fluid physics, materials science, plant growth, robotics, and Earth observation. Research conducted there can help scientists understand how the human body responds to spaceflight, test technologies for future exploration, and investigate physical processes that are difficult to isolate on Earth.

But for the people living there, the ISS is also home.

Crew members sleep in compact personal crew quarters, eat meals prepared from packaged food, call loved ones when schedules allow, and try to maintain routines amid an unusual day-night cycle. The station circles Earth about once every 90 minutes, meaning its occupants experience multiple sunrises and sunsets every day.

A Halloween costume session may seem minor compared with a scientific experiment or a spacecraft docking. Yet it illustrates the human side of exploration. Future missions to the Moon and Mars will require crews to spend even longer periods away from Earth. Learning how people maintain wellbeing, cohesion, and cultural connections will be part of making those missions sustainable.

## From Orbiting Laboratory to Future Deep-Space Missions

The ISS is scheduled to remain an important platform for international research through the end of the decade, although its eventual retirement will shift much low-Earth-orbit activity toward commercial space stations and other platforms.

As agencies plan longer missions beyond low Earth orbit, the social lessons of ISS life will remain relevant. A Mars mission, for example, could keep a crew away from Earth for years. Communication delays, limited resupply options, and the inability to return quickly would make holiday traditions more difficult—but perhaps more meaningful.

Small rituals could become valuable tools for maintaining crew culture. A birthday meal, a music night, a shared Earth holiday, or a handmade costume may help astronauts preserve a sense of continuity during long missions.

Halloween aboard the ISS is therefore more than a novelty image. It is a reminder that space exploration depends not only on rockets, computers, and life-support hardware, but also on the people who must live and work together far from the world that made them.

## What We Know—and What We Do Not

NASA’s description establishes that ISS crews have celebrated Halloween with creative costumes, sometimes individually and sometimes as a group. The agency also notes that these outfits are often made from materials available aboard the station.

What is not known from the source summary alone is the precise plan for every future crew, the specific costumes worn in a particular year, or whether a Halloween event will be publicly documented. ISS schedules and crew activities can change in response to operational needs.

The enduring point is straightforward: astronauts continue to bring elements of Earth culture into orbit, adapting ordinary traditions to an extraordinary environment.
