# Ancient Mars Meteorite May Preserve Clues to the Red Planet’s Earliest Crust

A rose-colored meteorite found in the Sahara Desert has been identified as an exceptionally ancient piece of Mars, according to a NASA-funded study.

The roughly 800-gram, or nearly two-pound, rock was recovered in 2022. At first, its age and planetary origin were uncertain. Researchers later analyzed minerals within the specimen and determined that they formed more than 4.1 billion years ago. That places the rock among the oldest known meteorites from Mars.

The finding matters because Earth has erased much of its own earliest geologic record through erosion, plate tectonics, volcanism, and recycling of crust into the planet’s interior. Mars, by contrast, retains large regions of ancient terrain. Meteorites blasted away from its surface provide scientists with actual physical samples of those long-vanished environments.

The source information released by NASA identifies the specimen as a Sahara meteorite and describes it as rose-colored, but it does not provide all technical details, such as the meteorite’s formal classification name, the specific minerals dated, the laboratory method used, or the journal publication associated with the study. Those details will be important for evaluating exactly how the rock fits into the broader record of Martian meteorites.

## A Rock Formed During Mars’ Earliest History

Mars formed about 4.5 billion years ago, alongside Earth and the other planets in the solar system. A mineral age of more than 4.1 billion years means this meteorite formed relatively soon after the planet itself assembled.

That era was a dramatically different chapter in Martian history. Early Mars likely experienced intense volcanism, frequent asteroid impacts, and substantial internal heat. Orbital observations also show extensive ancient valleys, altered minerals, and sedimentary deposits that point to past interactions between rocks and liquid water.

The oldest Martian surfaces are generally associated with the Noachian period, which began more than 4 billion years ago. This was the era when many of Mars’ large impact basins formed and when rivers, lakes, groundwater systems, or some combination of them may have been more widespread than they are today.

A meteorite from this period is not necessarily evidence that the exact location where it formed was wet or habitable. Its value is different: it can preserve direct chemical and mineralogical information about the crust that existed when Mars was still young.

Scientists can use such samples to investigate questions including:

– How quickly Mars built its earliest crust
– Whether ancient Martian rocks formed from volcanic magma or were altered by water
– How the planet’s interior chemically evolved
– When different parts of Mars’ crust solidified
– Whether conditions favorable to long-lasting liquid water were possible

## Why Mars Meteorites Are So Valuable

Thousands of meteorites have been recovered on Earth, but only a small fraction are known to originate from Mars. These rocks are called Martian meteorites because their chemistry, mineralogy, and trapped gases match measurements made by spacecraft studying the Martian atmosphere and surface.

A major breakthrough came from gas analyses of meteorites such as EETA 79001. The composition of gases trapped in tiny pockets within the rock was found to closely resemble the Martian atmosphere measured by NASA’s Viking landers in the 1970s. That comparison established a reliable connection between certain meteorites and Mars.

Most Martian meteorites are thought to have been excavated by powerful impacts. An asteroid or comet strikes Mars with enough force to launch fragments beyond the planet’s gravitational pull. Some of those fragments travel through interplanetary space for millions of years before eventually colliding with Earth.

This journey makes each meteorite a complicated time capsule. It can record several distinct events:

1. **The formation of its original minerals on Mars**
2. **Later alteration by heat, fluids, or impacts on Mars**
3. **The impact that ejected it into space**
4. **Its exposure to cosmic rays while traveling through space**
5. **Its weathering history after landing on Earth**

When researchers describe the Sahara specimen as more than 4.1 billion years old, they are referring to the ancient formation age of its minerals or parent rock. That does not mean the meteorite has been lying in the Sahara for 4.1 billion years, nor does it indicate when it was launched off Mars.

## Dating Ancient Planetary Minerals

Researchers use radiometric dating to measure the ages of rocks and minerals. This approach relies on radioactive elements that decay into other elements at predictable rates over time.

Depending on the minerals present and the scientific question being asked, researchers may use isotope systems involving uranium and lead, rubidium and strontium, samarium and neodymium, or other parent-daughter pairs. A careful study may compare multiple isotope systems to distinguish the age at which a mineral crystallized from later events that might have heated, shocked, or chemically altered the sample.

For an ancient Martian meteorite, the date alone is only the beginning. Its mineral grains can reveal whether the rock cooled slowly beneath the surface or rapidly in lava near the surface. Chemical signatures can help trace the source magma and offer clues about the composition of Mars’ mantle and early crust.

Some meteorites also contain minerals changed by water. If that is the case for this newly described specimen, it could help constrain when water-rock interactions occurred on ancient Mars. However, the source summary does not state whether the meteorite shows evidence of aqueous alteration, so that should not be assumed without the full study.

## How Old Is Old Compared With Other Mars Meteorites?

A formation age above 4.1 billion years makes the Sahara meteorite remarkable, but it is part of a small and scientifically important group of very old Martian samples.

One famous example is Allan Hills 84001, or ALH 84001, a meteorite discovered in Antarctica in 1984. It crystallized roughly 4.09 billion years ago and became widely known in the 1990s because of disputed claims about possible traces of ancient life. Those claims remain unconfirmed, but the meteorite is still a major record of early Martian crust.

Another significant sample is Northwest Africa 7034, often called “Black Beauty.” It is a polymict breccia, meaning it consists of broken material from multiple older rocks fused together. Some of its components date to about 4.4 billion years ago, making it especially useful for studying Mars’ earliest crustal evolution.

The newly reported meteorite appears to add another relatively large sample to this rare category. A mass of around 800 grams is substantial by meteorite standards and may allow researchers to perform multiple analyses while preserving material for future work.

## A Complement to Mars Rovers and Orbiters

Meteorites and spacecraft answer different kinds of questions.

Orbiters such as NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and ESA’s Mars Express map minerals, landforms, ice deposits, and atmospheric processes across enormous areas. Rovers including NASA’s Perseverance and Curiosity examine rocks in their original geologic setting, documenting layers, textures, and relationships between minerals.

Meteorites, however, can be studied in laboratories with techniques too large or complex to send to another planet. Researchers can measure extremely small isotope variations, investigate microscopic structures, and repeat tests across many laboratories.

The strongest picture of Mars comes from combining these approaches. Orbital data can identify ancient crustal regions. Rovers can investigate promising environments on the surface. Meteorites can provide high-precision laboratory evidence about Martian rocks that were formed billions of years ago.

Eventually, samples collected by Perseverance could bring carefully selected Martian material to Earth, though the Mars Sample Return program remains a major technical and budgetary undertaking. Until then, Martian meteorites remain the only confirmed samples of Mars available for broad laboratory study.
