# Happy New Year on Mars: A Different Kind of Calendar

A new year on Mars begins when the Red Planet completes another full trip around the Sun. According to a European Space Agency notice, 30 September 2026 marks the start of a new Martian year, with the orbital milestone occurring at 10:16 CEST, or 08:16 UTC, on Earth.

The announcement is brief, but the event highlights an important fact about our neighboring planet: time on Mars does not map neatly onto familiar Earth dates, months, or seasons.

A Martian year is almost twice as long as an Earth year. Mars also has a more elliptical orbit, meaning its distance from the Sun changes substantially during the year. That affects the timing and intensity of Martian seasons, the planning of spacecraft operations, and the calendars used by scientists studying the planet.

## What Does “New Year” Mean on Mars?

On Earth, the civil New Year begins on 1 January by convention. It is not tied directly to a specific position in Earth’s orbit.

The Martian New Year used in planetary science is different. It is generally associated with northern spring equinox on Mars: the point at which the Sun crosses Mars’s equator from south to north. This moment is also defined as solar longitude, or **Ls**, equal to 0 degrees.

Solar longitude is a seasonal coordinate used by Mars researchers. Rather than dividing a year into fixed Earth-style months, it tracks where Mars is in its orbit:

– **Ls 0°**: northern spring begins and southern autumn begins
– **Ls 90°**: northern summer solstice
– **Ls 180°**: northern autumn equinox
– **Ls 270°**: northern winter solstice

This system helps scientists compare observations taken by different missions and at different times. A dust storm, frost deposit, cloud formation, or changing polar cap can be discussed in relation to the Martian season rather than a potentially confusing Earth date.

## A Martian Year Lasts About 687 Earth Days

Mars takes approximately 687 Earth days to orbit the Sun. That is about 1.88 Earth years.

A day on Mars, known as a **sol**, is much closer to an Earth day. One sol lasts about 24 hours and 39 minutes. As a result, a Martian year contains roughly 669 sols.

This combination can be counterintuitive. Mars has days that are only slightly longer than ours, but its year is far longer because the planet travels more slowly around the Sun along a larger orbit.

For robotic missions, sols are often more useful than Earth dates for daily planning. NASA’s Mars rovers, for example, number their mission days in sols. Seasonal science, however, depends heavily on Mars’s position in its orbit, making Ls and the Martian year essential reference points.

## Why Mars Has Uneven Seasons

Earth’s orbit is nearly circular, so our planet’s distance from the Sun changes only modestly over the year. Mars follows a more elongated orbit.

At one point in its orbit, Mars is closer to the Sun; at another, it is much farther away. This means Mars moves faster when it is near the Sun and slower when it is farther away, in accordance with Kepler’s laws of planetary motion.

The result is unequal season lengths.

Northern spring and summer on Mars are generally longer and comparatively milder because they occur when Mars is farther from the Sun. Southern spring and summer occur closer to perihelion—the point at which Mars is nearest the Sun—and are shorter but often more intense.

That orbital geometry has major consequences:

### Stronger southern summers

Mars receives more solar energy during southern summer than during northern summer. The added heating can contribute to more active atmospheric conditions, including regional dust storms and, in some years, planet-encircling dust events.

### Longer northern seasons

The northern hemisphere’s warmer seasons are longer, which is significant because Mars’s northern lowlands contain extensive plains and possible ancient ocean basins. Studying how water ice, carbon dioxide frost, and atmospheric water vapor behave through these seasons remains a key part of Mars research.

### Variable solar power for missions

Solar-powered landers and rovers must contend with changing sunlight, dust on their solar panels, and seasonal shifts in temperature. The design and operation of Mars hardware depend on detailed forecasts of local and global conditions.

## Which Martian Year Is Beginning?

The source item identifies the date and time of a new orbit but does not specify the numbering system for the Martian year in the provided summary.

That detail matters because there is no universally adopted civil calendar for Mars. The most widely used scientific convention is the Mars Year numbering system, which counts years from a reference point in 1955. Under this system, researchers can label observations by Mars Year and solar longitude.

However, exact dates for Martian New Year can vary slightly depending on the ephemeris, time standard, and convention used to define the seasonal boundary. The ESA item should therefore be read primarily as a marker of Mars completing an orbit, rather than as the start of a public holiday or a fixed calendar tradition comparable to Earth’s New Year’s Day.

There is also a reason to verify the published timing against mission-planning ephemerides as the date approaches. Orbital events are calculated with high precision, but public summaries may omit the underlying convention, including whether a stated time refers to a particular coordinate system or seasonal definition.

## Why a Mars New Year Matters to Science

The beginning of a new Martian year is more than a calendar curiosity. It provides a useful reference point for long-term studies.

Mars scientists monitor changes that repeat—or fail to repeat—from one year to the next. These include:

– The advance and retreat of seasonal polar caps
– Atmospheric dust levels
– Water-ice clouds and high-altitude haze
– Surface frost in mid-latitude regions
– Temperatures, winds, and pressure cycles
– Methane observations and other atmospheric measurements, where applicable

Comparing the same season across multiple Martian years can reveal whether an observed event is routine weather, an effect of local terrain, or part of a longer-term climate pattern.

For example, global dust storms do not occur every Mars year, but they tend to be most likely during the southern spring and summer period, when Mars is closer to the Sun. Tracking those seasons carefully helps mission teams protect equipment and interpret data affected by airborne dust.

## Mars Time Is Increasingly Relevant

Human missions to Mars remain a future goal, but Mars timekeeping is already an operational issue. Engineers working with landers and rovers often adjust their schedules to match the local solar day at a mission site. For teams on Earth, that can mean workdays shift later by about 39 minutes each day during certain phases of a mission.

A future human presence on Mars would
