## NASA Plans Earth-to-Space Call With Florida Students

NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney are scheduled to answer questions from students at Sally Ride Elementary School in Florida during an Earth-to-space educational event from the International Space Station.

According to NASA’s announcement, the call is set to begin at 12 p.m. EDT on Friday, Oct. 16, and will be streamed on the agency’s Learn With NASA YouTube channel. Students’ questions will be prerecorded, while the astronauts are expected to respond from aboard the orbiting laboratory.

The event is part of NASA’s broader effort to make space exploration more accessible to classrooms. Rather than presenting the International Space Station as a distant engineering project, education downlinks give students an opportunity to hear directly from people who live and work in orbit.

NASA’s notice identifies Watkins and Delaney as the participating astronauts. The announcement does not provide a full event agenda, list the exact student questions, or detail the astronauts’ current mission assignments beyond their participation in the planned call. As with all space-to-ground activities, schedules can change because of station operations, communications availability, or mission priorities.

## Why NASA Connects Classrooms to the Space Station

The International Space Station is a working research facility that circles Earth roughly every 90 minutes. Since the first long-duration crew arrived in 2000, astronauts and international partners have used the station to study subjects including biology, fluid behavior, materials science, combustion, Earth observation, and the effects of microgravity on the human body.

For students, that work can become easier to understand when it is explained by the people performing it.

An astronaut answering a question about sleeping in microgravity, growing plants, exercising every day, or conducting an experiment can connect textbook concepts to real-world science. The conversations also show that major space missions rely on more than astronauts. Engineers, software specialists, medical teams, scientists, educators, communications professionals, technicians, and mission controllers all contribute to the work.

These events are especially useful because they place STEM learning in a practical context. A question about how astronauts drink water can lead to a discussion of life-support systems and recycling. A question about floating can introduce gravity, orbital motion, and Newton’s laws. Questions about teamwork can help explain how international crews coordinate scientific work and respond to unexpected technical issues.

## The International Space Station Is More Than a Destination

The station is often described as a laboratory in low Earth orbit, but it is also a test bed for technologies and practices needed for future exploration.

Astronauts aboard the ISS help researchers investigate how people and equipment perform during long missions away from Earth. This knowledge has relevance for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon and build experience for future human missions farther into the solar system.

Microgravity creates conditions that are difficult to reproduce for long periods on Earth. Without the dominant effect of gravity pulling materials downward, scientists can study how fluids mix, how cells grow, how flames behave, and how certain materials form. Not every experiment leads immediately to a consumer product or medical treatment, but the ISS provides a platform for research that can expand scientific understanding and guide future technology development.

Education calls also reflect another long-running purpose of the station: public engagement. The ISS is operated through a partnership involving NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency. Student events help show how that international cooperation works in practice.

## Jessica Watkins’ Role as a STEM Role Model

Jessica Watkins is a NASA astronaut, geologist, and former International Space Station crew member. In 2022, she flew to the station as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission and became the first Black woman to complete a long-duration mission aboard the ISS.

Her scientific background can be particularly relevant to students interested in Earth science and planetary exploration. Before joining NASA’s astronaut corps, Watkins studied geology and conducted research related to Mars. Geologists contribute to space exploration by helping scientists interpret planetary surfaces, identify the history of rocks and landforms, and select promising areas for future exploration.

Her participation in a student question-and-answer event offers an opportunity to demonstrate that careers in space begin in many fields. Astronauts have backgrounds in engineering, medicine, military aviation, science, and other disciplines. There is no single academic path to working in space exploration.

NASA’s announcement also names astronaut Luke Delaney as a participant. The source summary does not include biographical details, a mission history, or further information about his role. For that reason, viewers should rely on NASA’s event coverage and official astronaut profiles for any updates or additional context.

## How an Earth-to-Space Call Works

A live connection with astronauts requires careful planning. The ISS travels at about 17,500 mph (roughly 28,000 km/h), passing over different parts of Earth as it orbits. Communication links are routed through ground stations and relay satellite systems, allowing mission teams and public events to maintain contact when the station is in the appropriate position.

For a school event, NASA and its partners coordinate the time window, technical setup, student questions, school participation, and broadcast arrangements. Using prerecorded student questions can help make the program more efficient while allowing the astronauts to provide answers during the live segment.

The format is different from an ordinary video call. Time is limited, the crew has a demanding schedule, and station communications are shared with operational needs. Still, the live setting matters. It lets students see astronauts in their workplace and observe the unusual environment of microgravity.

Viewers may see objects floating, crew members moving through modules in unfamiliar ways, or equipment designed to stay secured in place. These details can prompt useful discussion about the engineering required to live safely in space.

## What Students May Learn From the Broadcast

NASA has not published the complete list of questions in the source item, so it would be premature to predict the specific subjects Watkins and Delaney will address. However, student calls from the ISS commonly explore several broad themes:

– Daily routines in microgravity, including eating, sleeping, hygiene, and exercise.
– Scientific experiments conducted aboard the station.
– The training astronauts complete before launch.
– How crews communicate and cooperate with teams on Earth.
– The technology used to produce oxygen, manage water, and protect astronauts.
– Career paths in science, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and related fields.

Teachers and families watching the broadcast can extend the experience by asking students to connect one question from the event to a classroom topic. For example, an astronaut’s explanation of orbit can support a physics lesson, while a discussion of water recycling can lead to conversations about environmental systems and resource conservation on Earth.

## A Small Conversation With a Larger Purpose

A scheduled question-and-answer session may last only a short time, but it represents years of work across education, communications, human spaceflight, and science programs. For students, the most important takeaway may not be a particular fact about the International Space Station. It may be the recognition that science is an active process performed by people who ask questions, test ideas, and work together.

NASA’s planned Florida event continues a tradition of bringing the space station into schools through live programming. If the Oct. 16 call proceeds as scheduled, viewers will be able to watch on the Learn With NASA YouTube channel and hear directly from astronauts working hundreds of miles above Earth.
