Excerpt: NASA’s image of a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch shows the dramatic “jellyfish” effect: a rocket exhaust plume illuminated by sunlight after sunset or before sunrise. The phenomenon is visually striking, but it is a well-understood result of high-altitude sunlight, expanding exhaust gases, and atmospheric conditions.

# NASA’s SpaceX CRS-35 Launch “Jellyfish” Explained

A SpaceX Falcon 9 launch carrying a Dragon spacecraft created a luminous, jellyfish-like shape in the sky on October 13, 2026, according to a NASA image feature published the following day.

The effect was not an unusual object, a spacecraft malfunction, or an atmospheric mystery. It was a familiar launch-time optical phenomenon often called a “rocket jellyfish.” It occurs when a rocket ascends through the upper atmosphere near sunrise or sunset, while the ground below is already in darkness or deep twilight.

NASA’s description says sunlight illuminated the Falcon 9’s exhaust plumes, producing the glowing structure captured in the image. The mission was identified as SpaceX CRS-35, a Commercial Resupply Services flight using the company’s Dragon spacecraft.

The supplied NASA item is primarily an image description rather than a full mission report. It confirms the date, vehicle family, Dragon payload type, and visual explanation, but the provided summary does not include the launch site, destination, cargo manifest, mission duration, or detailed mission outcome. Those details should be confirmed through NASA’s mission pages or SpaceX launch information when available.

## What Is a Rocket “Jellyfish”?

A launch jellyfish is the bright, expanding cloud produced by rocket exhaust at high altitude. From the ground, it can resemble a glowing sea creature with a rounded head and long, trailing tendrils.

The visual effect is most likely when a rocket launches shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset. At that time, observers on the ground may be in shadow because the Sun is below their horizon. But the rocket, which is rapidly climbing tens or hundreds of kilometers above Earth, can still be directly illuminated by sunlight.

Its exhaust plume also reaches high altitudes, where the surrounding air is extremely thin compared with conditions at sea level. The exhaust expands outward rapidly, creating a broad, faint cloud that can scatter sunlight over a large area of sky.

The result can appear especially dramatic during stage separation or upper-stage firing. The plume’s shape changes as the rocket climbs, turns downrange, and releases exhaust into changing atmospheric pressure conditions.

## Why the Plume Looks So Large

The plume from a rocket engine does not behave the same way at all altitudes.

Near the launch pad, dense air restricts the exhaust and keeps it relatively compact. Higher in the atmosphere, decreasing pressure allows the hot gases to expand much more freely. This creates the large, bulbous shapes commonly seen in twilight launch photographs and videos.

Several factors influence what people see:

### Altitude

A rocket can reach the upper atmosphere within minutes of liftoff. Above much of Earth’s dense lower atmosphere, exhaust spreads into a much larger volume than it could near the ground.

### Sun angle

The Sun must be low enough that the ground is dark or approaching darkness, while high-altitude exhaust remains sunlit. This geometry gives the cloud its bright, almost self-luminous appearance.

### Engine operation and staging

The timing of first-stage shutdown, stage separation, second-stage ignition, and other mission events can produce distinct shapes in the plume. A thin line may trace the rocket’s earlier path, while a bright, widening cloud can mark a later engine burn.

### Atmospheric winds

Winds at different altitudes can pull and distort the exhaust cloud. This is one reason a rocket jellyfish may appear to have tendrils, loops, or an asymmetrical tail.

## Why Twilight Launches Create the Strongest Views

Most launch plumes are far less visible in broad daylight. In daytime, the sky is already bright, so the contrast between the plume and its background is relatively low.

At night, the plume may not receive direct sunlight at all, limiting visibility except near the launch site or where vehicle lights are visible.

Twilight provides the unusual middle ground. The lower atmosphere and ground are darkening, increasing contrast, but sunlight still reaches objects high above the observer. The illuminated exhaust can therefore stand out in pale blue, white, orange, pink, or violet tones.

The colors are not necessarily a sign of unusual chemistry. They are often shaped by sunlight scattering, viewing angle, the amount of atmosphere between an observer and the plume, and camera exposure settings. Long-exposure images can make the effect look even more expansive than it appeared to the unaided eye.

## The CRS-35 Context

CRS stands for Commercial Resupply Services, NASA’s program for flying cargo missions to low Earth orbit using commercially operated spacecraft. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft has become a major part of that logistics system, delivering supplies, scientific equipment, and other cargo to orbital destinations.

NASA has used commercial cargo flights to support the International Space Station for more than a decade. These missions can carry crew provisions, replacement hardware, research experiments, and equipment needed to maintain the station’s laboratory capability.

The NASA summary identifies the launch as SpaceX CRS-35 and says Dragon was carried by a Falcon 9 rocket. However, the source material provided for this article does not specify which orbital facility received the spacecraft. Dragon cargo missions have commonly supported the International Space Station, but readers should avoid assuming a destination or cargo list without a complete official mission briefing.

That distinction matters because launch imagery and mission documentation serve different purposes. NASA’s image feature explains what was photographed. A launch press kit, mission overview, or post-launch update is normally where the agency provides confirmed details about payloads, docking plans, and mission milestones.

## Why These Images Matter Beyond Their Visual Appeal

Rocket jellyfish images are compelling because they make normally invisible aspects of spaceflight visible to people on the ground.

They show that a launch is not only a point of light rising from a pad. It is also a high-altitude event extending across a large region of the sky. The plume records the rocket’s rapid passage from dense lower air into the near-vacuum conditions above most of Earth’s atmosphere.

For scientists and engineers, exhaust plume behavior is part of a wider field involving propulsion, atmospheric physics, fluid dynamics, and remote observation. While a public photograph is not a substitute for engineering telemetry, it can help illustrate how dramatically gases expand as pressure drops with altitude.

For the public, such images can also be useful reminders that the same launch may look completely different depending on where and when it is viewed. Residents hundreds of kilometers away can sometimes see a twilight plume even when the rocket itself is difficult to spot.

## Not a Sign of a Problem

The unusual appearance of a jellyfish plume can lead to online speculation, particularly when people see it without knowing a launch is underway. In most cases, the phenomenon is expected and benign.

A glowing exhaust cloud does not by itself indicate an explosion, an emergency, or an unidentified aerial object. Its striking form is created by ordinary rocket operations occurring under favorable lighting conditions.

That said, visual interpretation has limits. A single photograph cannot confirm every aspect of a launch. Official mission updates remain the best source for determining whether a launch, stage recovery, spacecraft deployment, or docking operation proceeded as planned.

## A Familiar Effect in a New Image

NASA’s CRS-35 image is another vivid example of how orbital launches can briefly transform the twilight sky. The jellyfish-like plume is a product of straightforward physics: high-altitude exhaust, low ambient pressure, a low Sun, and an observer looking from a darker location below.

Its appearance may be unusual, but the mechanism is well understood. In that sense, the image captures both sides of modern spaceflight: advanced hardware headed toward orbit, and a natural interplay of light and atmosphere visible from Earth.
