Excerpt: A NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day listing titled “3D 67P” points to the remarkable comet explored by ESA’s Rosetta mission. Here is what scientists learned from Comet 67P and why three-dimensional views matter.

## A 3D Look at Comet 67P

NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) listing for October 17, 2026 is titled **“3D 67P.”** The supplied source summary confirms the title and its placement in the APOD archive, but it does not include the full explanatory text or the image credit. That means the exact image combination, viewing method, and original observation date cannot be confirmed from the available item alone.

Still, the subject is clear: **Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko**, the small, oddly shaped comet investigated at close range by the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft.

A three-dimensional presentation is especially useful for 67P. Its two-lobed form, steep cliffs, fractured terrain, pits, dust-covered plains, and active jets can look deceptively flat in a standard spacecraft photograph. Stereo imagery helps reveal how those features sit in real space—and why 67P became one of the most scientifically important comets ever visited.

## What Is Comet 67P?

Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko is a short-period comet that travels around the Sun once roughly every 6.4 years. It belongs to the Jupiter-family class of comets, whose orbits are strongly influenced by Jupiter’s gravity.

The comet was discovered in 1969 by astronomers Klim Churyumov and Svetlana Gerasimenko. It is now widely known for being the destination of ESA’s Rosetta mission, which arrived in 2014 after a decade-long journey through the Solar System.

67P is only a few kilometers across, but it has a complex shape unlike a simple sphere or potato-like asteroid. It consists of two major lobes connected by a narrower “neck” region. This appearance led to informal descriptions of the object as duck-shaped, though its surface is far more rugged than that nickname suggests.

Scientists have debated whether the comet formed as two separate bodies that gently merged early in Solar System history, or whether it was sculpted into its present shape by erosion and other processes. Research based on Rosetta data strongly supports the idea that its lobes were once separate objects that joined in a low-speed collision.

## Why a 3D Image Matters

Three-dimensional comet imagery is often created from two views taken from slightly different positions. When those views are presented as an anaglyph—commonly using red and cyan color channels—viewers wearing compatible glasses can perceive depth.

Stereo views can also be processed digitally into terrain models without requiring special glasses. Scientists use overlapping images to calculate the height and shape of surface features, a technique known as stereophotogrammetry.

For Comet 67P, this is valuable because its terrain is extreme. Rosetta observed:

– Towering cliffs and scarps
– Circular and irregular pits
– Boulder fields and fractured ground
– Broad smooth deposits of dust
– Layered structures exposed in cliff walls
– The narrow neck where activity was often concentrated

A standard two-dimensional image can show texture, shadows, and bright spots, but a 3D view adds a sense of scale. It can distinguish a depression from a mound, clarify whether a line is a ridge or a shadowed fracture, and show how a cliff face rises above surrounding terrain.

That matters for geology. The shape of a comet’s landscape records how sunlight, heating, sublimation, dust movement, and structural weakness have changed it over time.

## Rosetta’s Historic Mission to a Comet

ESA launched Rosetta in 2004 and placed the spacecraft into orbit around 67P in August 2014. It was the first mission to orbit a comet’s nucleus, rather than simply fly past one.

Rosetta remained with 67P for more than two years, watching the comet as it moved toward and then away from the Sun. As solar heating increased, frozen materials beneath or near the surface turned directly into gas in a process called sublimation. The escaping gas carried dust into space, creating the diffuse coma and tail associated with active comets.

The spacecraft’s camera system, OSIRIS, documented changes across the nucleus. Rosetta saw dust jets, collapsing cliffs, moving boulders, growing fractures, and regions transformed by the comet’s seasonal cycle.

The mission also deployed the Philae lander in November 2014. Philae’s landing did not go entirely as planned: it bounced after its initial contact and eventually came to rest in a shaded location. Even so, the lander returned important data from the surface before its batteries lost power.

Rosetta ended its mission in September 2016 with a controlled descent to the comet’s surface. The final close-up measurements added to the mission’s long-term record of 67P’s changing environment.

## A Primitive Archive of Solar System History

Comets are scientifically valuable because they preserve material from the early Solar System. They formed in cold outer regions where volatile compounds—including water ice, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and more complex organic molecules—could survive.

Unlike planets, large moons, and many asteroids, small comets have not experienced extensive melting and geological recycling. Their surfaces do change, particularly near the Sun, but their interiors may preserve ancient material from the era when the planets were forming.

Rosetta’s instruments detected a range of carbon-containing compounds in 67P’s coma and dust. The findings do not show that comets delivered life to Earth. However, they strengthen the case that comets contain ingredients relevant to prebiotic chemistry—the chemical processes that preceded life.

The mission also investigated the comet’s water. Measurements of the hydrogen isotopes in 67P’s water showed a deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio different from that of Earth’s oceans. This result suggests that comets like 67P were unlikely to have been the only, or dominant, source of Earth’s water. It does not rule out a contribution from other comet populations, but it highlights the complicated history of water delivery in the young Solar System.

## A Changing Surface, Not a Frozen Relic

The phrase “dirty snowball” is sometimes used for comets, but it is too simplistic for objects such as 67P. The comet’s surface includes dust, ice, rocks, consolidated material, layered deposits, and fragile structures shaped by repeated passages near the Sun.

As 67P warms, gases escaping from below the surface can loosen material and carve landscapes. Dust may settle elsewhere, covering older terrain. Cliffs can collapse, revealing fresher material beneath. Seasonal illumination can also create very different conditions between the comet’s hemispheres.

Rosetta observed evidence of this ongoing evolution. One of the mission’s important lessons was that cometary activity is not merely a smooth, global process. It can be highly localized, controlled by topography, illumination, fractures, and the distribution of volatile materials.

A 3D view makes this point more intuitive. It shows that a jet may emerge near a cliff edge, within a depression, or along a fractured region rather than from an undifferentiated surface.

## What the APOD Listing Confirms—and What It Does Not

The available NASA APOD listing identifies the feature as **“3D 67P”** and dates it October 17, 2026. The supplied summary does not provide the complete APOD explanation, the image credits, whether glasses are required, or whether the view is based on Rosetta’s OSIRIS camera data, a terrain reconstruction, or another visualization.

Those details should be checked against the full APOD page when available. However, the title itself points to a valuable idea: close observations of Comet 67P become even more informative when viewers can see its irregular terrain in three dimensions.

The comet is no longer being visited by Rosetta, but its scientific legacy remains active. The mission produced an enormous archive that researchers continue to analyze, helping explain how small icy bodies formed, evolved, and contributed material to the early Solar System.

## Why 67P Still Captures Attention

Comet 67P is a reminder that some of the Solar System’s smallest worlds can answer some of its biggest questions. Its dark surface, weak gravity, unusual shape,
