# NASA JPL Looks Ahead After 90 Years of Innovation and Exploration

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, widely known as JPL, traces its origins to a small group of Caltech graduate students and rocket enthusiasts testing propulsion ideas in Pasadena, California. On Oct. 31, 1936, their work in the Arroyo Seco helped begin a story that would reshape American space exploration.

Ninety years later, JPL is one of NASA’s most important centers for robotic missions, spacecraft engineering, planetary science, and deep-space communications. Managed by the California Institute of Technology for NASA, the laboratory has contributed to missions ranging from the first successful U.S. satellite to spacecraft orbiting other worlds and rovers driving across Mars.

A NASA item looking toward JPL’s next 90 years highlights ambitious concepts including interstellar probes, lunar drones, and helicopters on Mars. Such concepts point to the laboratory’s long-term direction, but they should not all be treated as approved flight missions. In space exploration, a compelling engineering idea can take years of study, funding decisions, technology development, and scientific review before it becomes a launch-ready project.

## From Arroyo Seco Rocket Tests to the Space Age

JPL began before NASA itself existed. In the 1930s, the United States had limited experience with large rockets, while a group associated with Caltech was experimenting with propulsion systems in the hills above Pasadena.

Among the early figures connected with this work were Theodore von Kármán, Frank Malina, and Jack Parsons. Their research group was initially known as the GALCIT Rocket Research Project, referring to the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology.

Early experiments were difficult and sometimes hazardous. Yet the work helped establish practical experience in rocket propulsion at a time when the field was still emerging. During World War II, the group developed jet-assisted takeoff, or JATO, units to help heavily loaded aircraft take off from short runways.

The organization later became the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Its role evolved again after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, beginning the Space Age. JPL played a central role in the launch of Explorer 1, the first successful U.S. satellite, in 1958. Explorer 1’s instruments also helped identify the radiation belts surrounding Earth that are now known as the Van Allen belts.

NASA was created later that same year, and JPL became a NASA center managed by Caltech. That relationship continues today.

## JPL’s Defining Role in Robotic Spacecraft

JPL is especially associated with robotic exploration. While NASA’s human spaceflight programs have historically been led from other centers, JPL has become a key institution for sending scientific spacecraft to difficult destinations.

Its work has included missions to the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, comets, asteroids, and the outer reaches of the heliosphere. JPL also develops instruments, navigation methods, software, and communications systems needed to operate spacecraft at vast distances from Earth.

Mars has been a particularly visible part of the laboratory’s legacy. JPL has led or supported a series of Mars landers, orbiters, and rovers. The laboratory managed the Mars 2020 mission, which delivered NASA’s Perseverance rover and the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter to Jezero Crater in 2021.

Ingenuity demonstrated that controlled, powered flight was possible in Mars’ extremely thin atmosphere. Its flights were technology demonstrations rather than a conventional science mission, but the achievement has influenced thinking about future airborne exploration. Aircraft could potentially reach terrain that is hard or impossible for wheeled vehicles to investigate, including steep slopes, crater walls, and regions near ice deposits.

## What “Helicopters on Mars” Could Mean

The phrase “helicopters on Mars” is a reminder that Ingenuity was likely a beginning, not an endpoint. Future Mars aerial vehicles could be larger, more capable, and more closely integrated with rover or sample-return operations.

NASA and JPL have studied the possibility of Mars helicopters that could carry small payloads, scout routes, or retrieve materials. However, technical challenges remain substantial. Mars aircraft must be extremely lightweight, energy-efficient, and able to operate through cold temperatures, dust, and changing atmospheric conditions.

Future vehicle designs may not always resemble a familiar terrestrial helicopter. Engineers can consider rotorcraft, small drones, or other aerial platforms depending on the mission goals. What is known is that Ingenuity produced real flight data from another planet. What remains uncertain is which follow-on aircraft concepts will receive funding and be selected for flight.

## Lunar Drones and the Return to the Moon

The Moon is another likely area for JPL’s future technology work. NASA’s Artemis-era lunar exploration plans involve astronauts, robotic science missions, commercial landers, communications infrastructure, and potential long-term surface operations.

Drones or hopping robotic vehicles could help study lunar regions that are difficult to reach with conventional rovers. Permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles are of particular interest because they may contain water ice and other volatile materials preserved in extreme cold.

A flying drone faces challenges on the Moon because there is essentially no atmosphere to provide lift. Unlike Ingenuity on Mars, a lunar aerial vehicle cannot use rotors in the normal sense. A vehicle described as a “lunar drone” would likely need another approach, such as rocket-powered hopping or propulsion systems designed for brief controlled flights.

That distinction matters. Lunar drone concepts may be useful, but they are not directly comparable to drones operating in Earth’s atmosphere or even to a Mars helicopter. Their value would come from mobility: reaching rough terrain, entering difficult geological areas, and gathering measurements across a wider area than a stationary lander can cover.

## The Long View: Interstellar Probes

Interstellar probes represent perhaps the most ambitious idea associated with JPL’s long-range future. NASA’s Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft, both managed by JPL, became the first human-made objects to travel beyond the heliosphere, the bubble of solar influence created by the Sun’s wind and magnetic field.

They are not traveling to another star in any practical mission sense. The nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, is more than four light-years away, and spacecraft traveling at today’s conventional speeds would need many thousands of years to reach it.

An interstellar probe concept, therefore, does not necessarily mean a mission designed to arrive at another star. It could instead be designed to travel much farther beyond the heliosphere than previous spacecraft, making detailed measurements of the interstellar environment.

Such a mission would require reliable power, durable instruments, autonomous operations, and a communications strategy capable of functioning at enormous distances. It would also need a way to travel faster than many past deep-space probes. Concepts have examined advanced propulsion and gravity-assist trajectories, but no single interstellar probe architecture should be considered settled unless NASA formally selects and funds it.

## Deep Space Needs Deep Space Communications

JPL’s next decades will not be defined only by spacecraft traveling farther away. The laboratory also operates NASA’s Deep Space Network, a global collection of large antennas in California, Spain, and Australia.

The network allows mission controllers to communicate with spacecraft across the Solar System. Its three-site design helps maintain contact as Earth rotates. Deep Space Network antennas receive scientific data, transmit commands, and support navigation for missions operating far beyond Earth orbit.

As more missions launch to the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and the outer Solar System, communications capacity becomes increasingly important. Future missions may return higher-resolution images and more complex scientific data, increasing the need for improved radio systems, optical communications, and smarter methods for prioritizing information onboard spacecraft.

This infrastructure is less visible than a rover or a planetary flyby, but it is fundamental. A spacecraft’s discoveries are useful only if its data can make the long journey back to scientists on Earth.

## Why JPL’s Anniversary Matters

JPL’s 90th anniversary is more than an institutional milestone. It illustrates how scientific progress often develops over decades through testing, failures, incremental improvements, and collaboration.

The laboratory’s early founders could not have predicted every mission that followed their rocket experiments in the Arro
