Excerpt: A vast, recurring cloud near Mars’s Arsia Mons volcano is one of the Red Planet’s most unusual weather features. New work combining Mars Express observations with atmospheric modeling suggests that its formation may involve more complex physics than previously understood.

## Mars’s Oddest Cloud Is More Than a Curious Image

Mars is often portrayed as a dry, dusty, largely static world. But its atmosphere is active and surprisingly complicated. Dust storms can spread across continents, thin clouds of water ice drift through the sky, and seasonal changes reshape conditions from the poles to the equator.

One of the planet’s most unusual atmospheric features is a long, narrow cloud that forms near Arsia Mons, a giant extinct volcano in Mars’s Tharsis region. Known as the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud, this striking feature can stretch for well over 1,000 kilometers across the Martian sky.

According to a European Space Agency item describing work with the Mars Express spacecraft and a modern Martian weather model, the cloud may be governed by atmospheric processes that are more exotic than scientists had assumed.

The source summary does not provide all of the study’s technical results, and its listed publication date—October 7, 2026—is in the future relative to this article’s publication context. Still, the broader scientific case is clear: Mars Express observations and atmospheric models are being used to understand why this cloud forms so regularly, grows so dramatically, and disappears again within hours.

## What Is the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud?

The Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud is a recurring water-ice cloud associated with Arsia Mons, the southernmost of three enormous volcanoes in the Tharsis Montes chain. Arsia Mons itself rises many kilometers above the surrounding plains and has a vast caldera at its summit.

Despite its location near a volcano, the elongated cloud is not evidence of volcanic activity. Mars’s giant volcanoes are ancient geological structures, and the cloud is a weather phenomenon rather than a plume of gas or ash.

It is usually observed during the Martian southern winter, when atmospheric conditions are favorable for water vapor to condense into ice crystals. The cloud tends to appear near the volcano around sunrise, extend westward, and then fade as the morning progresses.

That daily cycle is part of what makes it so valuable to researchers. A feature that returns in a recognizable pattern can be studied repeatedly across Mars years, allowing scientists to compare observations with simulations of the planet’s atmosphere.

## A Cloud Shaped by a Mountain

On Earth, mountains can strongly influence local weather. Air forced up a mountain slope cools as pressure drops. If it cools enough, water vapor condenses, producing clouds. Downwind of mountain ranges, atmospheric waves can create distinctive stationary cloud patterns, including lenticular clouds.

Something similar can occur on Mars, although the environment is very different.

Mars has a much thinner atmosphere than Earth, lower gravity, colder average temperatures, and major variations in airborne dust. The planet’s enormous volcanoes can nevertheless push air upward and disturb the flow of the atmosphere. Arsia Mons is particularly capable of doing so because of its immense size and elevation.

The elongated cloud is generally understood as an example of an orographic cloud: a cloud linked to topography. As winds pass over or around Arsia Mons, their movement can create cooling conditions that allow water ice to form.

But “mountain cloud” is not the full explanation. The cloud’s exceptional length, changing shape, seasonal timing, and brief lifespan suggest that several atmospheric processes are interacting at once.

## Why Mars Express Observations Matter

ESA’s Mars Express mission has been orbiting Mars since 2003. Its long operational lifetime has made it particularly useful for monitoring seasonal and recurring phenomena, including clouds, dust activity, polar ice changes, and surface-atmosphere interactions.

Images from Mars Express have documented the Arsia Mons cloud on multiple occasions. In some views, it resembles a bright, narrow streamer extending from the volcano into the morning atmosphere. Its appearance can be visually dramatic, but its scientific value comes from the information it carries about temperatures, winds, humidity, and atmospheric circulation.

No single spacecraft image can explain all of that. Scientists need measurements collected over time, at different seasons and local times, alongside computer models that test whether known atmospheric conditions can reproduce what is observed.

This is where the combination mentioned in ESA’s summary becomes important. Orbital observations show what the cloud looks like and when it appears. Meteorological models help researchers examine the physical conditions that could produce it.

## What Could “Exotic Physics” Mean?

The ESA source describes the possibility of “very exotic physics” behind Mars’s most curious cloud. Without the full underlying study details, that phrase should not be interpreted as evidence for unknown forces or anything outside established planetary science.

In atmospheric research, unusual or “exotic” physics often means that familiar processes are operating under extreme conditions.

For Mars, those conditions can include:

– Very low atmospheric pressure
– Large temperature swings between night and day
– Extremely cold upper-atmosphere temperatures
– Fine dust particles that affect heating and cloud formation
– Rapid winds flowing over enormous volcanic terrain
– Water vapor amounts that are small by Earth standards but still sufficient to form clouds

Water-ice clouds on Mars may form in environments where the vapor is highly supersaturated, meaning that more water vapor is present than would normally be expected before condensation begins. The availability and properties of tiny particles that can act as cloud condensation nuclei may also matter.

Atmospheric waves are another possible factor. When winds encounter mountains, they can create gravity waves—not gravitational waves of the kind detected by LIGO, but pressure-driven waves in a fluid atmosphere. These waves can move air up and down, causing repeated cooling and warming. In the right conditions, they can help produce clouds in narrow regions or at particular altitudes.

A state-of-the-art Mars meteorological model can test how these processes interact. If a standard model cannot reproduce the cloud’s behavior, researchers may need to refine assumptions about microphysics, dust, water vapor, turbulence, or the behavior of atmospheric waves.

## A Window Into the Martian Water Cycle

The elongated cloud is also relevant to a larger question: how water moves through the modern Martian atmosphere.

Mars does not have rivers, rainstorms, or a dense water cycle like Earth’s. Yet it still has an active cycle involving water vapor, frost, polar ice, atmospheric transport, and clouds. Small amounts of water move between the surface and atmosphere as seasons change.

Clouds are a visible part of that system. Their formation removes water vapor from the air temporarily, while their particles can affect how sunlight and infrared heat move through the atmosphere. Studying when and where clouds appear helps scientists improve climate models of Mars.

That matters not only for interpreting today’s planet but also for reconstructing its past. Mars was once wetter, and understanding the present-day atmosphere helps scientists determine how the planet lost much of its former water and changed into the cold desert world seen today.

## Why the Cloud’s Timing Is Important

The cloud’s strong morning pattern offers a natural laboratory for Mars meteorology.

Before sunrise and shortly afterward, temperatures and winds can differ substantially from conditions later in the day. As sunlight warms the ground and lower atmosphere, the delicate conditions needed to maintain a water-ice cloud may disappear. That helps explain why the Arsia Mons feature can grow quickly and then dissipate within the same morning.

Its seasonal recurrence is equally informative. Mars has an axial tilt, so it experiences seasons, although they are affected by its more elliptical orbit. Southern winter can produce the combination of temperatures, circulation patterns, and water availability needed for the cloud to develop near Arsia Mons.

Scientists can use those repeatable conditions to ask precise questions. How cold must the air become? At what altitude does ice form? What wind speeds and directions are required? How much water vapor is present? And why do
